Nice too see someone else say that minors shouldn't post NFSW for safety reasons I remember sharing my opinion on that to my sibling and they said I was being paranoid.

I can confirm that when I posted NSFW, I attracted weird people such as - dudes who had dick pics all over their profile - a bunch of weird gacha porn accounts - someone sent me a dm with a nude character that looked like they got traced from lion king and a twitter nsfw artist and made it sound like they did not intend to pay me - other people asking for free art (literally never had that happen on my main) and I heard lots of stories from people younger than me who replied to the requests for free art only for some random adult to take advantage of them and do what criminals online who are into kids do. I´m lucky I escaped that shit

its absolutely not paranoia. im 30 now and when i was a minor the internet wasnt even as crazy or expansive as it is now, and gosh did i talk to some creepy adults as a teen. please stay as safe as possible out there.

Nice video! Your editing is very professional and you explain things very calmly despite this being a rant. However, I’d like to bring up some points in favour of closed species since in my option you’re a little too harsh on them Obviously I’m not here to defend Ghostdoggos or cupcakecats (an actual cs I made in my younger years which I 100% regret) or whatever, we all know that’s stupid, but closed species can be far more original than that. Take primagens for example, before protogens (which were only made because people harassed the creator cuz they didn’t like that they couldn’t have a primagen) there was nothing else out there quite like them. Sure, there were raptors and bunnies and screen-faced cyborgs before them but nobody had made something quite like them before, plus they came with a lot of unique lore. Personally, I think a species that unique and with that much love and care put into it (primagens were originally designed as two oc’s for the creator and their partner iirc) has every right to be considered original. I can see how you might think it inhibits creativity, but I think it’s hypocritical to apply this reasoning to cs but not to oc’s. For example, let’s say I make a character who, while not being a complete copy of your oc, takes after a lot of the major details as well as having suspiciously similar lore. You’d be upset, right? But when you go to confront me, I whine about how a few details are different so you’re inhibiting my creativity by not letting me make something similar! Why should it be any different for species? Yes eventually coincidences are going to happen, but usually it’s pretty easy to tell what’s a coincidence and what’s deliberate copying and if everyone remains calm and respectful something should be able to be worked out, Yes, there’s definitely issues with many closed species, originality being one of them, but I think it’s unfair to write them all off as unoriginal animal + food cashgrabs meant to stifle creativity, especially since some species’ exclusivity is for personal reasons rather than money. Apologies if my tone came off as rude or harsh, I’m open to others ideas and opinions if anyone would like to discuss

One thing that really ticks me off in the community is the idea that using references means that you aren’t actually as much of an artist cause you aren’t “drawing from your mind”. By their logic, only people who haven’t been able to see their whole lives are “”real”” artists. Even Da Vinci himself had to use reference when painting the Mona Lisa, there’s no shame in using them especially when it can make your art less frustrating and look better! I’ve been trying to work on putting more details in my anatomy, I draw almost exclusively humans and while I know general anatomy it’s not as intricate as I’d like it to be, so for me until I get through studying muscles and bones and whatnot I WILL have to use lots of references to be happy with my art and will probably still have to after. Even if you aren’t going for something realistic, it’s good to know what things look like in the real world to stylize them properly

man I actually felt so bad sometimes for needing a reference when drawing something simple, I literally have a big reference folder just for hands lol. I had to accept that it is okay to use refs and it took me a while. A couple times when artist put a question box in their stories, I would ask them if they use references, and a lot actually said yes they do, some more often than others but it really gave me a good feeling not even my favourite artist can draw nice ass without using google

In art school, you are HEAVILY reminded to use visual reference when possible and are sometimes required to include your references in assignments as part of the grade. I will never understand the idea that reference doesn't make you a real artist.

copying art styles it is a thing and is a small problem (at least in the ibis community) a person ima call Jackie, they had a pretty nice art style just saying. suddenly changed there art too EXACTLY how a popular artist called pottata' chip drew AND THIS WAS POTTATATS' FRIEND MIND YOU and said they didn't even base the new style of of pottats' and did not copy him and people where so mean for accusing them for copying. later pottata stated that they didn't tell them/give Jackie permission to copy his style and asked them KINDLY to fess up, apologize and change there art style back to how it used to be (pottata, even stated that he liked how there art used to look) and he would forgive Jackie for what they did. Jackie stated again that they did not copied pottata' and could not fathom how pottata' could say such a thing. to tell the truth I dont know much else except pottata' broke of there friendship, I dont know if they fessed up but Jackie apologized and the both have sense kind of been avoiding each other but slowly mending there relationship although doubt they will be friends again.

I’m not entirely against closed species, as I feel there are many (some of which I own characters from) that are indeed super unique and have had a TON of thought put into them, down to their backstories and each customizable trait. It’s a good way for artists to make money along with commissions. My problem lies with creators who’s “original species” is so unbelievably basic and easy to replicate that it’s barely worth copyrighting and getting mad over other people making one for themselves (because of how simplistic and/or common the traits are). Ghost dogs, as an example you’d given. What do you think of the more “complex” closed species? Are you for or against them?
@rottika
@rottika 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest, though I will probably never create a closed species myself, nor will I ever pay to own a character from one, I do understand why people make them and I have no problems with artists that do. As long as artists create a "complex" and unique closed species, I don't think that there's anything wrong with creating a unique species and then making money off of it. So, yeah. I don't have any problems with it in itself (as long as the species isn't too simple), but I don't think I'll make or buy one any time soon. :]

My personal peeve is people saying how bad the art community is toxic and down in the dumps when really, it’s mainly a handful of artists that should not be used to summarize the whole community. I don’t recall most of the community mentioning the likes of tutorial artists, Mohammad Agbadi, Jazza, or SuperRaeDizzle in these dramas

I always had just a tiny little bit of fun with the groups I was in when sharing wips. I'd censor random things on the brush settings just to screw with people, even though they were usually things I just used unchanged from the defaults. It was all fun and games with the communities I was in, and turning the brush settings into a jigsaw puzzle kinda thing was pretty common at one point.

Hello! I completely understand where you're coming feom here; maybe my wording in the video was sort of vague in reference to this topic. In my experience, I have had a similar battle with self-esteem issues and self-loathing that you have described here. As someone who has and still does struggle with self-doubt and hate constantly, I realise that it is not as simple to recover as many people make it out to be. I agree that I probably should have been more transparent in the video, because what I meant to get across was that going around and verbalising your hate of yourself only makes it all the more palpable. Again, I do realise that learning to get into a healthy thought pattern is more difficult, but the first step to recovery can be as small as lifting oneself up and being more kind, especially to your work. I apologise if I came off as dismissive or uninformed here, that was not my intention.

The art style theft thing is so ridiculous but it just won't die. Just a few months ago, an artist in my community shamefully confessed to ripping off another artist's style... which was basically just a modified version of the style of our fandom's source material. I'm so sad that that kid felt actual, geniuine shame for doing something that you're literally MEANT to do! Imitating other people's style is a great way to experiment, go out of your comfort zone and develop your own style. Even if you "copy" that style 100%, after a while you'll automatically start adding your own quirks to it unless you put concious effort into keeping it from doing so. Atleast in my experience. I love all the really good advice you sprinkled in, great video! To add onto the "use references" thing, I can really recommend the program "DesignDoll" (for desktop users). It's a digital posing doll that lets you customise ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. Incredibly helpful for drawing hands and feet especially since you can move every joint/finger/toe INDIVIDUALLY. I actually couldn't live without it. Though I'd still recommend using it in addition to a picture reference if you're worried about making a drawing anatomically accurate.

Is it weird that I do draw everyday? I’ve heard a lot of people saying you shouldn’t because you’ll burn yourself out but honestly I draw everyday and I’m fine. Personally it has helped me improve, in the span of about 2 years I’ve filled at least 4 sketchbooks and changed my art style probably 8 times, but I’ve finally found something that works for me and drawing and doodling definitely helped.
