BASEBALL RULES that UMPIRES get WRONG | Umpire Training
What rules do umpires, coaches, and players get wrong on the baseball field?

We care for the game, our officials, and the communities we serve. That spirit, equal parts passion and compassion, led us to found Official Finders in 2009. In the years since we've slowly but steadily built an organization that sources and trains officials that help struggling youth sports organizations. More than filling a job for a game, our mission is helping to create work with meaning.

Great video! As an umpire, I've experienced or heard every single one of these instances too many times to count.

The reason there isn't, or shouldn't be, a "must slide rule" is because of liability. Must-slide was taken out of rule books because of insurance liability. I don't know if they still have it, but one national travel baseball league did have must slide about fifteen years ago. The coach showed me the rule. When I was in charge of the in-house baseball we had to tell coaches if you are telling kids they "must slide" you must go back and correct the misinformation and explain it to everyone that they must avoid contact.. I even had a game where one league's coach was teaching rolling blocks, cleats up, etc. As the umpire I instructed to him that this wouldn't be tolerated and I walked over and made the instruction to his team. I reported this to his organization president who immediately sent out a clarification to all of his coaches and sat the coach down. The coach didn't know the game he just knew a little about the dirty part of the game.

I would add that if a batter is hit by a pitch that would enter the strike zone, this should be a dead ball strike and 1st base should not be awarded. My impression is plate umpires frequently are not paying close attention to a batter being in the running lane to 1st base and sometimes are not paying close attention to the catcher's position when setting up to receive a throw and make a tag at the plate. If I ever umpire, I am fearful I will make mistakes here because as a spectator, I rarely see these two plays well. I also feel that some home plate umpire get distracted from calling a strike when the batter successfully checks their swing.

The "continuing action" rule is a peculiarity of NFHS. At every other level, as far as I know, the standard is "secure possession", "firmly held" and "complete control".

At all levels the catch is completed when the fielder displays voluntary release.

@@alanhess9306 NCAA and OBR use the phrase "voluntary and intentional release", but NFHS does not, instead using "The catch ... is not completed until the continuing action of the catch is completed." The outcome is the same but the way it is defined is different!

I got a question and it seems everyone I talk too has a different answer. This situation was at a Little league minor A's game, 8 and 9 year old kids. A hit pitch and runners are advancing, a bad throw to the catcher and it skips by him. The catcher is standing on the first base side of the home plate about a foot or soo away from the plate and is looking for the ball. A runner comes into score, steps on the home plate and then runs into the catcher knocking him down. Everyone gasped at the intentional collision especially since the runner is easily twice the size of the catcher. The ump didn't say or do anything, what should he have down? The game had to be stopped and the catcher carried off the field. At the hospital was found to have badly bruised ribs and slight concussion, his season was over. But even without the injuries shouldn't the umpire have at the very least given a warning to the kid? I was only a spectator.

Old post but nobody answered. The proper answer should be "I would have to have been there." You mention that it was intentional collision (malicious contact) which is grounds for immediate ejection, but not an out and the run would still score as the malicious contact happened after the runner scored. Intentional, however, is a judgment call, and without seeing the play you can't possibly answer this question, and it would only be an opinion. If the official didn't call anything, it wasn't ruled intentional. If the official DID call it malicious contact and there could have been a subsequent play, he is no longer a runner, INT could be called, play immediately stops and someone is out (but not the runner, he's ejected as I mentioned above). In any event, if the umpired judged the player incapacitated, play should cease immediately. Just based on your description of the situation, my leaning is towards nothing unfortunately. It is difficult for someone running at full speed to stop in a foot, especially if the fielder is moving trying to find the ball. At 8/9 it's even more difficult. Working LL for 25 years, most kids don't want to hurt someone, especially by running into them and risking getting hurt themselves. A terrible situation, but I can understand why the umpire didn't call anything or issue a warning.

Actually in HS, there is a "slide rule", just not a "must slide rule." Also, the if the "batter holds onto the ball for 2 seconds", HE should be out.

I was umpiring a high school game and there was a bang bang play at first. And I called him out. The coach loved me for that. He cussed me out and I tried to explain it to him but he said I am dumb and I don't know what I am talking about. He said he been coaching for 20 years. He said I'll prove it to you. I'll look it up.

?????? Totally lost on what point you were going for here and how it relates to the video. LOL So you made a bang bang play at first. One coach will love it and the other hate it. No coach is cussing me out for it. Explanation is 2 seconds "Coach, in my judgment the ball beat the runner and he is out.". What else are you going to explain? As for him coaching for 20 years and wanting to prove it. "You don't need to prove anything. I believe you. But the call isn't going to change.". Anything more we start. Warning, restriction, ejection.

There is no such thing as a tie to the bag. The rule states that the runner must beat the throw to the bag.
@ralphcampbell7537
@ralphcampbell7537 2 жыл бұрын
My rule book says 5.09 (a) 10 "A batter is out when: after a third strike or after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base". Therefore the throw must beat the runner to the bag and not that the runner must beat the throw.
@bdogg20101
@bdogg20101 2 жыл бұрын
@@ralphcampbell7537 which in layman's terms means that the runner is out if the bag is tagged or the runner is tagged before the runner reaches the bag. Which means that the runner must not be tagged and he must beat the throw to the bag.
@officialfinders2153
@officialfinders2153 2 жыл бұрын
This is a difference in OBR versus NFHS. NFHS says that the runner has to beat the throw. Most of the leagues our organization provides umpires for use NFHS which is why we didn’t address it, but you are correct about OBR. NFHS rule is 8-4-2 j.
@baseballumpires6901

@@ralphcampbell7537 Play on words. Think about it logically for a second. Whether you want to say the runner has to beat the throw or the throw has to beat the runner.....the end result is ultimately the same. One must happen before the other. Either the foot touches the bag first (the runner beat the throw) or the throw is received by the fielder with his foot on the bag first (the throw beat the runner). At the end of the day, it is a judgment call foot on bag or ball in glove.
