0:33. I was taught that the official lineup was the one given to the PU. Whatever was given to the other coach, scorekeepers, fans, etc. are not official. Ideally, they're all the same, but where they differ, the one given to the PU is official. What's the correct ruling here? 1:19. I don't think you call the batter out here -- he is just removed from the field of play. I think you call the *proper* batter out and the next batter is the name that follows that proper batter. If the batting order is Smith - Jones ... but: Jones goes to bat, Jones gets a single, and then the defense appeals. (1) Jones is removed from the base, (2) other runners are returned to their bases prior to that last pitch (steals and other stuff stand), (3) Smith (not Jones) is called out, and (4) the next batter is the one that follows the proper batter Smith ... which is Jones (again). The craziest part is that teams can pretty much bat in whatever order they want, as long as the other team doesn't notice. They can bat their big HR-hitting stud every-other batter, if they want. Umps say and do nothing until the other team does. Weird.

He’s safe, the runner is allowed to round the bases to a reasonable distance, it’s not like he changed his direction drastically. He would have been called out if he would have rammed into the defensive player, so I wouldn’t call him out.

Out, 3 feet not 5.5. Easy to tell, you can see the runner lands safe but his body length tells you he for sure went out of the base path unless the runner is 3 feet tall then yeah safe.

I have been umpiring for 33 years at ALL levels. I have trained 100's of fledgling officials. I have coached at all levels. As a coach and an umpire, I appreciate the following the most: 1) Take a moment before making your call. 2) Follow the ball/play. 3) Focus on the current situation and expect different scenarios. 4) Be in sync with your partner(s) 5) Be objective no matter the circumstances. 6) Always be in position. Find the best angle. 7) Be confident in your call. 8) Be assertive not arrogant. 9) Be approachable. 10) Be invisible

Runners on first and second 1 out and I called infield fly. Batter is out, but the runner at second was off the base when the catch was made. They throw it back to second but did not put the tag on the runner. Is the runner out at second.? Is the runner supposed to tag even though it’s infield fly?

I would add that if a batter is hit by a pitch that would enter the strike zone, this should be a dead ball strike and 1st base should not be awarded. My impression is plate umpires frequently are not paying close attention to a batter being in the running lane to 1st base and sometimes are not paying close attention to the catcher's position when setting up to receive a throw and make a tag at the plate. If I ever umpire, I am fearful I will make mistakes here because as a spectator, I rarely see these two plays well. I also feel that some home plate umpire get distracted from calling a strike when the batter successfully checks their swing.

When the topic of rain comes up, I tell the players this: "I hate to call games on account of rain. However, I'd hate to call an ambulance even more, so I'm going to have to use my best judgement." I mean it, too. I'd rather get the games in if possible, but I'm not going to risk center field catching a bolt from Zeus in the process.

For the most part, well done! Very informative. I'd like to share the following with you: ● I find the very frequent pop-ups to be very distracting! I lose interest. ● Cutting back on a few repetitive comments will keep your readers/listeners more attentive. ● At about 3'58" in the video, the word "expectations" is currently misspelled with an extra "i": "... expectiations... " ● I took particular notice of something that *wasn't* done by the umpire calling balls and strikes. As the pitch was thrown, he failed to move his hands from the front of his knees to behind his back. This is a recipe for broken fingers, hands, and wrists! I see that you've posted additional umpiring videos on You Tube -- which I will be watching as part of my refresher for the upcoming seasons. Lastly, as an umpire fir 30+ years, when I'm teaching the basics to up and coming newbies, I emphasize the following: ● Know the rules! Different leagues have various or altered rules. ● Take charge of the game from the meeting at home through the last play of the game! This sets the tone for the impartial umpire who has been charged with officiating the game! This doesn't mean being snarky, snotty, or rude. ● Perhaps of most significance is "Anticipation." Be cognizant of where in the field you should position yourself as a play unfolds, which will often change based on the unfolding. An extension of this, eg, would be taking note of the runners on base and whether or not the next batted pitch becomes a situation where the "infield fly rule" should be invoked. Best regards, Dave

Hands are not part of the bat. That is a myth. The hands are part of the batter. If the hands are hit by a pitch it is just like any other time a batter is hit and they should take their base. If the hands are hit and the batter is swinging it is a strike and a dead ball, not a foul, even if it is strike three.

concur with @cus9298 - you should be in front of runner on double or triple - (Read the play!) Button hooking has also been outdated. Simply, swivel head back around behind you to see batter/runner touch 1st. (Avoid knee sprains/injuries.)

WRT foul tip: the ball, after coming into contact with the bat must first touch the glove of the catcher, whether it is caught immediately or bobbled. If the ball contacts the catcher’s glove but is not caught immediately and the catcher gains control whether by trapping or catching, it is a foul tip. If the ball is not caught by the catcher, it is then a foul.

Safe! No tag attempt before he changed his path to the base. He has 3 feet on either side when tag is attempted. A base runner can run to a base virtually any way he wants until a tag is being attempted.

Also, completely disagree with the B position facing first base. This is completely wrong. U1's proper positioning is hands on knees and squared off toward home plate. U1's primary responsibilities begin with watching the pitcher for balks, then home plate for check swing appeals and foul balls off the batter's foot. His tertiary responsibility is for pickoffs. The pitcher's throw will take him to that play when it occurs.
@ymcairedellbball
@ymcairedellbball 7 ай бұрын
Overall, good video, but I (and most mechanics manuals) disagree with you on the extended play with nobody on. For a solo runner (BR), U1 has him all the way to third. The PU has no baserunner responsibilities on a solo BR on a double or triple. PU stays at home that entire play. The one and only time U1 ever covers home is when he goes out from A on a trouble ball down the right field line; once the ball is established fair and will not be interfered with, he sprints in foul territory to home because PU has the BR (solo) runner all the way to third. These mechanics have been in the MiLB, NFHS, and NCAA mechanics manuals for years and are common practice.
@cus9298
@cus9298 7 ай бұрын
Overall a great video but a few mechanics that are not correct. Starting in A and waiting for the batter/runner to clear 1st before cutting in is an old mechanic that should be abandoned. You should cut in on any play to the outfield then button hook to see the batter/runner tag first and then you are in front of the batter/runner and inside them to quickly be able to get to all bases. If you wait until after they reach 1st you may not be able to catch them if there is a close play at 2nd.

At 6:33, with U1 in B and R1 at 1st, you say that he should face 1st base. No! U1 should face the batter and only pivot to face 1st base when he needs to. This is especially true with R1 and R3. You never want to have your back to a runner (e.g. R3).

@@mptr1783 U1 should also be watching the pitcher for possible balks. He has other responsibilities other than plays made on R1. He is also responsible to rule on any check swing appeals or if a batted ball hits the batter while in the box. Facing 1st base would make it difficult to fulfill his other responsibilities. It's highly unusual to face 1st base. I'm not sure I've ever seen an umpire position himself like that.

@@DavidEmerling79 did you freeze the video at the 6:40 mark? Ive seen a ton of umpires line up like that with a single runner on 1st base. Slightly facing 1st base. And yes, you can still do all the other aspects of the job while in that position IMO
@DavidEmerling79
@DavidEmerling79 8 ай бұрын
At 5:11 You talk about U1's responsibility on a double/triple when there are no runners on base. You say, "As the runner rounds 1st base, you'll want to cut behind him." If there is a play at 2nd, U1 will be 'chasing' the runner from behind and will never get a good angle on the play. Once U1 sees that the ball has been hit into the outfield, he should immediately leave position A and move toward the infield grass *before* the batter-runner even gets to 1st base. You want to cut in *front* of him!
