BASEBALL RULES that UMPIRES get WRONG (Vol 2) | Umpire Training
What rules do umpires, coaches, and players get wrong on the baseball field?

We care for the game, our officials, and the communities we serve. That spirit, equal parts passion and compassion, led us to found Official Finders in 2009. In the years since we've slowly but steadily built an organization that sources and trains officials that help struggling youth sports organizations. More than filling a job for a game, our mission is helping to create work with meaning.

Foul tip must be caught by the catcher to be a live ball

You highlighted the wrong part of the foul tip rule and edited it so quickly it is confusing. The key point of the foul tip is the catcher catching the ball legally, i.e. before it hits the ground

When running to first, foul territory is on the right. Second base is to the left. Got your directions messed up.

Left and right are hard to keep straight 😉 Spent hours editing the video and didn’t notice that until someone pointed it out the other day.

To be fair, when in A, foul territory is to the left. That’s how I interpreted it

WRT foul tip: the ball, after coming into contact with the bat must first touch the glove of the catcher, whether it is caught immediately or bobbled. If the ball contacts the catcher’s glove but is not caught immediately and the catcher gains control whether by trapping or catching, it is a foul tip. If the ball is not caught by the catcher, it is then a foul.

Love the video - but the title bugs me; every umpire I work with gets these rights. If anything, it's the players (and many base coaches) who miss these ones. But hey, gotta hit that algorithm and no one likes to be wrong! Great content, thanks bud.

I think it may just be semantics but you’re calling it “coaches interference”. It’s not, it’s coach (or any offensive player other than another base runner) assisting a runner. The reason it’s not called interference is that the ball will remain live (if it is already and not a situation like a HR or when a ball is thrown into dead ball area). Interference usually indicates the ball is dead immediately and all runners shall not advance. If an umpire kills this play he has effectively taken away the defenses ability to possibly retire another base runner. This is a rule I often see umpires Miss by immediately killing the play and making other runners return.

Thank you for the feedback Biily Ray. You’re correct as in that it’s semantics however it is important for us to get this correct. Something we will note and correct in an edit in the future.

If the baserunner has to deviate speed or path to avoid a catcher or fielder who is blocking the base or plate without the ball, obstruction should be called. Failing to call obstruction is one of the reasons there are so many collisions in the field.

I agree that it needs to be called more often, I would however disagree that calling obstruction would prevent the inevitable from happening.

An actual umpire would not get any of these wrong. A dad out of the stands that gets pressed into umpiring for the day probably would. These are all pretty basic.

Maybe. I hear some form of these claims every year because most coaches aren't actually coaches. They are dads volunteering to coach. Most don't mean to create problems, but they do anyway. Some, you have to embarrass as happened in a game where a coach was challenging various calls with no idea of what the rule. On one, there was a foul-tip, his runner advanced to third base where he was the coach. He told his runner to go back to second where the defense threw the ball and tagged him out. He went off on the called out. I then walked toward him to tell him that is enough, I've heard all I want to hear out of him and embarrassed him by loudly explaining what a foul tip is. A few of his parents were beside themselves because he didn't know the rule and were quiet for the rest of the game. One husband and wife came up and apologized for the behavior of their team shortly after. They said they had no idea he didn't know any of the rules.

Guys, new umpire here. A call I had to make in my first game behind the plate was not received well by a parent- 2nd and 3rd, 2 out, groundball to 3rd baseman who, instead of throwing to 1st for the force, tried tagging the guy running from 2nd who got in a rundown. Runner crossed before the tag out and I counted the run. The defensive coach came out. I explained everything and he was cordial and understanding. A parent was asking very loudly how I justified the call and was making a scene. I ignored the parent. Question: do you veteran umpires take the time to calm an angry parent or just inform the coaches? Is ignoring that parent the right thing to do? Lmk your thoughts.

A foul tip is not a live ball if the catcher doesn’t catch it.

It's not a foul tip unless the catcher catches it. A Foul tip is by definition a ball hit directly back that is caught by catcher.
