Basecamp 2 - Yorkshire Dales adventure

In this Basecamping adventure, we head to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Pitching up for two nights at the CAMC site in Hawes and surrounded in outstanding scenery we spend a full day hiking into the moors to Dodd Fell and also explore the local area.

Loved this vlog Nick, your cinematography skills keep getting better with each one. This brought back some lovely memories of when my late wife and I stayed at the Hawes site. Our dogs enjoyed the site dog walk and lovely to see it’s as good now as it was all those years ago. Look forward to your next adventure.

Stunning scenery Nick another great vlog. You’ve showed me another area to put on my touring list. Great idea using the site facilities to clean the cadac me and the missus looked at each other and laughed as we never thought about doing that 🤦🏻‍♂️😂. I love watching your Basecamp2 adventures, I'm now in for my first caravan thanks to you! Do you have any thoughts on my choice between a Basecamp 2 and a Bailey Discovery 2 berth? Any insight would be invaluable.

They are both great caravans. The Bailey appears to have a higher quality finish inside albiet not as quirky in the overall design. Also the door is on the side on the Bailey. The door on the back of the Basecamp makes it’s easier to get bikes and awnings in for example.

Nick another superb film I've been looking at small campers however just can't seem to compare the facilities in the basecamp to the VW for the money I like you nick love the basecamp washroom and kitchen area Would you consider a camper ????

Thanks Ian. I would love to own a VW California like my mate has in the video. But not at the expense of the Basecamp. The VW provides the ultimate freedom especially when the weather is good but the Basecamp wins on overall comfort. Therefore in a perfect world I would love to have both but that’s never going to happen… VW’s get further out of my financial reach every time I look!

Nick. Undecided. Basecamp or VW Campervan. I know cost is a major factor. Did you discuss with your friend the pros and cons of you choices?

Now that is a big question and cost is not in the answer. We have experience with VW campers so I can make a comparison. Firstly, I can only dream and hope for a brand new VW California Ocean like the one in this vlog. However I wouldn’t compromise on the Basecamp. The VW is the ultimate freedom for all the reasons you probably already know and a caravan just can’t get close to this. But… the Basecamp wins on comfort especially with a fully functional wet room with flushing toilet, super king size bed, galley kitchen, heating, hot water and living space you can really stretch out in. The compromise is the setting up time involved, towing and it would be difficult although not impossible to wild camp. So…. It all depends on how you intend to camp and move around. For example, my mate in this video had just competed the NC500 in his Cali and had an amazing time. The Cali was the perfect tool for the job which would be hard to impossible to replicate in the Basecamp. However on a campsite, the Basecamp is your ‘Premier Inn room’ on wheels. Finally, in the winter I would personally prefer to be in a Basecamp with an awning.

@@raulmur4772 no problem😊. You won’t be disappointed with a Basecamp providing you understand what your buying into. One more consideration for the VW Cali. My mate also uses his in the Brit Stop / Pub car park network and has stayed overnight in some brilliant spots. This is not possible with a caravan. The Basecamp is more suitable for pitching up on a campsite for multiple nights where you then have your car to explore.

An interesting discussion and I hope you don’t mind me chipping in? We had a caravan a couple of years ago and loved it for all the reasons Nick has listed above. We sold it in 2020 as we needed some money due to me being freelance and not working for months during the year. Back in April this year we bought a 2012 VW Camper and really enjoy it, it’s great for day picnics and short weekends away etc and for anything longer, we rent a cottage etc. I enjoy the camper more than my wife as I see it as a solid tent but I wouldn’t like to stay in it for anymore than a few days. What I like about the BC2 is that it’s small and has all the facilities etc and you can leave it onsite while you go off for the day and it’s ready when you return. Enjoy your choices and make them work.

Unfortunately not🤫. She’s a typical cocker spaniel and loves everyone. I’m nervous that somebody I don’t know may innocently (or not) call her and she wanders off. If you ever see us out and about wander over and I’d happily introduce her😊👍🏻
