In this video we show how a ribbon edged sympathy item is created. Using a pleat technique for the ribbon and based with double chrysanthemums this can be applied to any letter or shape. You might never make one, but knowing how it is made you could apply the idea to a different design.

Wonderful video! My nan has just passed away this week and she'd have loved for me to make her floral tribute. This video has been so helpful and I now feel at ease that I will be able to create something beautiful! I am having a little trouble finding the fake grass strips though! Are the base flowers chrysanthemums? As those are my nans favourite!Thanks for sharing your talent!
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 7 жыл бұрын
Adele Cornwall thank you for the feedback, and sorry to hear about your nan. Yes the base flowers are chrysanthemums and you can use steelgrass or beargrass as a link for the flower placements. You could even use twigs or lichen branches for a winters look. I think your nan would love whatever you make, and it is lovely to know that you did them for her.

How big are the letters? Where does a non-professional buy that frame with the stand pieces, and styrofoam letters? I was thinking of using artificial flowers, instead of live.
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 7 жыл бұрын
I dont see why you wouldnt be able to buy the frames online or order at a florist. Some florists may not want to supply as they might think they are losing business. The frames though are filled with foam for fresh flowers, so if you wanted to create an artificial version then the base would need to be modified by changing the foam. It would be easy to use the base as a base though. Alternatively you could create a flat solid board and work your letters onto a background of green or moss or a different coloured flower - but you will need a lot of flowers! The depth of these letters is approx 12 inches - the main thing is to make a template shape to create each letter within - so say 12 x 8 so they all match. Hope that helps!

Hi i loved you work how many bunches of the white flowers did you use altogether pls and how are the flowers kept watered. Is ig best done day before or on day of funeral?
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 5 жыл бұрын
gloglo illa these flowers can be heavy or light in volume, so best to plan for them being light. I tend to buy three bunches per letter - so 15 stems per letter. In a shop you can use the left over stems in other work, or they keep well, so can be left to open for the next funeral item. This can be made the day before - the flowers are in wet foam, so fine to base in advance. You might do the placement bits on the day if you like? The foam base can be very heavy when soaked, so a lot of people don’t fully soak them to save on weight, and drips!

Hi, very lovely. If you were making this arrangement of "DAD" for Father's Day or a retirement celebration, instead of a funeral, what flowers would you use? I'm just curious. Thanks!
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 5 жыл бұрын
Jean Vignes hello - that’s not something that people would order here, but it could look great for the backdrop to a party. It would look great on the wall actually and that would stop it looking like a funeral item. Flower wise I would probably use greenery to base and keep it quite compact - maybe just have the greenery for the letters, but use flowers for the placements that are a nice strong colour - like an orange rose. Strong colours are good for a man I think. If basing with flowers then again use strong colours - yellow chrysanthemums would be good - you could use the daisy Reagan style instead of the double. Lots of options I think - it’s a good idea!

@@FlowerJoos - Thank you! It's always interesting to compare flower culture across the globe. I lived in Paris for a year and when I first arrived I wondered why there were so many flower sellers around and in Metro stations open on Sundays, and then I found out that it is traditional for families to gather for Sunday dinner with "maman" and it is also traditional to bring her a big bouquet of pretty flowers wrapped in tissue and tied with raffia or ribbon.

Curious how a funeral home would display this. I’ve never seen one in the North western Pennsylvania area. Is it possible to place in the casket inside the lid, and would someone typically order this in place of a main spray that’s placed above the casket lid or half couch spray.

How many flowers on average do you use to cover a letter?
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 7 жыл бұрын
Jade Somers that can vary - depending on how full the chrysanthemum are. If you have bunches in stock then the coverage is better as the flowers have had time to open and develop a bit, if newly in then they can be quite tight, so the coverage is less. Even the bunches can be heavier or lighter depending on season. The best approach is to have too many and any spare can be used elsewhere. I would suggest you have at least 10 stems per letter, or 15 if light with blooms. Better with spare than not enough! The double whites are good lasting so would keep for other funeral work or even in mixed gift work.

this is beautiful John. may I ask how long you would soak the foam for? thank you!
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 5 жыл бұрын
Julia McCarthy it doesn’t take long to soak - normally the problem is fitting the frame in a basin or sink, so I think most people soak it with a jug. If you had a bath just drop it in foam up and allow it to soak itself - it might need pushed down so the water can reach the foam. But don’t push completely under the water - this creates an air bubble inside. It will soak in less than a minute. Just let it soak and you will see that it is fully saturated.

@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Jane - thank you for your comments and for the questions! I have removed oasis from frames before but generally wreath or posy pad frames rather than letters. The frames for posy pads are useful and easy to reuse. With the nature of the frames they don't tend to return, unless with event work, so I would think you may have a frame that is old, with foam maybe too old to use? Let us have a look at the best way to do this and we shall make a video!

loretta williams hello 😀 The ribbon is polypropylene - so cheap and waterproof. Only thing is it tends to get dusty if made up weeks in advance, so just do it as you need it. You should just get a roll, or use one that you don’t like, and have a good practise. Once you get into the way of it, then it gets more consistent - lovely pleats all the same width. @FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 6 жыл бұрын
cottage gardener that’s a good question. If you have a three letter word then a full roll of the poly ribbon will be more than enough. I used to have a workbench that was five foot wide and I used to judge one length pleated would be right per letter. I think a roll is 100 yards, so each letter needs 5 yards of ribbon.

So sorry to hear of your loss - our deepest condolences. For letters I tend to plan on 3 bunches per letter - so 15 stems ( x6 = 90 stems ) but the double chrysanths can be quite variable in size and weight, so it’s worth maybe worth adding a little extra, or buy the flowers as early as possible and put them in normal temperature so they open and fill out.

@FlowerJoos thank you for your reply. The letter have just arrived. How long should I soak the foam before use please?
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 9 ай бұрын
@@michellehoughton4210 if you fully soak them they can be very heavy and more at risk of damage, so I would use a jug and soak them but not oversoak them. If you make the letters the day before and keep them somewhere nice and cool then the flowers will be fine. Afterwards these items tend to be outside so then they will get moisture there. So as long as the placements areas are well soaked the other letter areas can be half wet but not saturated fully.
