Basel is one of those places you see in a post card, and upon arriving in Basel, you discover that Basel Switzerland really does look like the pictures. There is a lot in this incredible city by the Rhine. We have come to see the Basel Switzeralnd sites and attractions. This trip begins in Basel Switzerland's Market Square, or Marktplatz in the local language. So many cities have farmers markets on limited days, but Basel Switzerland has a farmers market every day of the week in Market Square. Chances are, if you are visiting Basel Switzerland, you will be able to catch the market. Market Square is also a great place to catch one of the many light rail trains to reach other Basel atractions.
From Market Square, we are heading to another of Basel Switzerland's attractions, the Rhine River Trail. This is a lovely way to take in the sites of the city. The Rhine River Trail follows the Rhine River through the city of Basel. Along the way we see many of the old ferries that carry passengers across the Rhine to reach either side of Basel. It is also a great place to see the contrast between old and new in Basel Switzerland.
The Rhine River Trail leads us to another famous Basel site, the old center of Basel in Munster Square. The square is named this because Basel Minster, a major Basel attraction that used to be a catholic cathedral, is located here. Basel Minster showcases incredible architecture with its vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows.
Not far from the square is one of Basel's many museum attractions. In this case the Basel Museum of Natural History. If you love seeing the different kinds of creatures that inhabit our world, Basel Museum of Natural History is a must see.
Another museum that cannot be missed when visiting Basel Switzerland is the Tinguely Museum. This very interesting museum features the works of Jean Tinguely, who is famous for his kinetic artwork. Inside you will find displayed many of the crazy machines he put together to satirize automation and industry.
Another must see in Basel Switzerland is the Kuntsmuseum, or the Fine Arts Museum of Basel. This Basel Museum houses the oldest public art collection in the world.
