We just bought a new home with an unfinished basement (rooms framed in). I have a main steel "I" beam and some hot/cold ducting across the middle of the family room to enclose. You have given me some very helpful ideas about how to do this so it looks as good as possible. Thank you.

Very nice job. Very precise framing. I'm currently in the planning phase of my basement. I have very similar obstacles you have pointed out. The difference is that I'm fighting for every inch on the height. I might consider going with 1x4 for the ceiling framing. Again thanks for sharing your video. I'm doing a basement gut remodel of a 100 year old house in Salem MA that has everything, and I mean everything to deal with. Some of those framing ideas saved me easily a few grand in not having to relocate gas pipes as well as avoiding running half the houses wired through drilled holes in the joists. The way you boxed in the lolicolumns was really clever. Just seeing how you framed in the stand pipes helps to conceptualize my approach in a space where I need to get creative with literally every step. I'd love to see how you handle clean out hatches and if you have ever built platforming for sub floor rather than bring in 10 yards of concrete to level out one end of the floor. I'm also checking the rest of your videos before I finish the windows to the stud walls there might be something in there I had not considered

Great finishing! My only comments are regarding closing in a window, your banding and drywall use. I would never put a basement window into a closet... natural light is worth more than gold for basements. Banding images showed many many locations where wiring was not protected by plates and could easily be hit with drywall screws. Finally, looks beautiful but have you never faced a problem with maintenance/upgr? By drywalling everything, you have made any maintenance a huge task for homeowners as they will have to cut/remove drywall and then have it fixed later.... drop ceilings for basements are wiser...sometimes homeowners don't think this thru but our job is to educate and then let them decide. Besides these, great work. Thx!

Just finished a basement. Second basement ever, but first doing soffit ladders.. with the multiple points of issue, we just decided to do it piece by piece. Semi experienced carpenter. We decided to build the the latter the length of the beam first. By the time we got three quarters of the way done with all the stud work, we realized that the beam wasn't square with the rest of the room. I didn't measure the beam ladder off the wall, I measued it off the beam.. just thinking that the beam would be square. But it was about 3 in off. So when we hung the ceiling drywall there was a gap. Luckily we are running crown molding. Next time I will measure off the wall to the beam ladder I'll

Hello Eddie, another great video man. Just wanted to mention at 5:40 you stated the columns were boxed out in 2x8 and then at 6:55 & 7:12 you stated they were boxed out in 2x6. I will be boxing mine out soon so I'm curious what one you typically use?

Question for you….I have watched several video where you attach 2x6 pine to steel lally columns using a ramset. I started using this method on all my finished basement, recently started using tapcon screws to get a more flush head. I have had multiple people question me on compromises the structure integrity by doing that. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks

Does not hurt the integrity. The nail plugs the hole so tightly that it actually replaces the small amount of steel it moves from the hole... The hole made by ther fastener pin is less than 1/8" in diameter and it is immediately replaced with the shaft of the nail. Been doing this for 38 years and have never had anyone question me including 100's of code departments who inspect my work...I'm not too worried. ~Eddie

Sorry for double tapping as I posted this question to another of your videos, but I just saw this obstacle video. I am trying to frame a wall but I have a supporting steel column just two feet away from the wall in the very middle of it. The wall is only 21 feet long and I have no clue how to make this as a single wall, because the steel column is in the way and won’t be able to build it on the floor without trapping the column. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I’m just wondering if it’s a requirement to create a access door/panel at the cleanout cap? I see a lot of people creating these doors or mounting flush panels over the drywall, where the cleanout is located. Are we required to make a door or mount a panel over the cleanout? its a great video but i am a little confused about access to plumbing should you need to. i noticed one panel but i know from experience the access panels will grow over time as needed. did you avoid them because the property was going to sale?

We go back and cut them in after drywall is finished and painted. and then install them. We simply make a detailed location "map" of all the spots where we are going to need the access panels before we drywall so we know exactly where to cut them out later-on. Eddie

You don't have to put in access panels if you don't want to. They are only there if your plumbing fails or you somehow get a leak. Valves can usually be replaced from the bathroom side, so unless you have to replace the entire valve body, there is no need for a panel. For the cleanout, it should be there ahead of time because future owners may have no idea where the cleanout is without being told. I take pictures of every single wall before it is drywalled so I know where every pipe, heat run, vent, and every wire is. Not sure if it was mentioned in this video, but in Wisconsin, every shutoff valve and heat run damper in the joists needs to have access.

Alex, you need total access to this gas manifold. You will need to make an access panel or frame for a standard door opening in front of it. ~Eddie

Great tips. I have a waste pipe that runs across the house however it runs horizontally halfway down the wall then exits mid wall. It also runs very close to the bottom of a basement window. How would you tackle this because the window needs to be framed and the pipe being halfway down the wall doesn't have anything to connect to as a soffit.

What if you have a heating duct running the length of a room, but too close to the cinder blocks to attach a stud wall + rigid foam to the joists above?

I have this issue on one side of my basement where the water pipes were attached to the joist. Technically, do I only band frame the 1 side of the basement, and this side will have a slightly lower ceiling or both sides for consistency? Will you notice the difference? Thanks for your advice.

Basement Finishing Man, I love your videos. I'm in the process of DIY my own basement and using a lot of your videos as reference. A couple questions relating to banding the ceiling in this one. I was going to do that on mine however my pipes and wires are off the joists about 1 1/4". Would you still recommend this route or something else to drop low enough for drywall? I'm not working with a high ceiling to begin with. Also you only went every 2 feet, how did you put up drywall if you didnt use any kind of measuring?

How do you build your framing wall if the ceiling to floor height over the span of your wall is different by an 1 inch or more? In the video's you had about a 1/8 of an inch difference and you said you could manage up to a 1/4 inch gap. But what if the gap is going to be more like an inch?

What can you do in a situation where you have steel I beams placed throughout, but you don't want to necessarily box in front of it due to the fact that it would make the room significantly smaller being that you would have to add 3.5 inches past the beam. not sure if I would have went the banding route for finishing the basement ceiling. If it was a necessity to later trace wires out or add more, or something wrong with a clogged or leaking pipe or tubing that would be a friggin nightmare to dig through and find, or fish through 2, 3, 4 or 5 years down the road. The finished result does look nice though, but I probably would have went a different route. Or at least re-route some of that wiring or piping to a more convenient location before sealing everything in permanent like.

It's all non-serviceable stuff were covering so it makes no difference it it's sealed up forever. Look at it like this...it's the same exact stuff you have between the first floor and the 2nd floor of your house, pipes and wires. We do create access to all plumbing cleanouts in case of drain clogs and anything else that needs future servicing...the rest of it...cover it and forget it! Since the system is pressurized you should really contact a plumber or sprinkler system mechanic to extend the head down below the soffit plane. I do not recommend doing any sprinkler system or relocation of sprinkler heads yourself. Eddie

You actually think it's OK to close off a cleanout? Do you know what an access panel is? Also, do not close off all that stuff in the ceiling with drywall. Any work on that house will require tearing out drywall and a dumpster in the driveway. This is why when purchasing a house I prefer the basement NOT be already finished.

Larry...relax brother! I've put hundreds and hundreds of access panels in my friend. We only cover-up what is NON-SERVICEABLE with drywall. Everything else can be drywalled over with no repercussions.
