Basement Improvements and Vapor Barrier Installation On Ledge Rock

This is another video in our series of basement improvements. 
This home was for sale and being considered for purchase by first-time home buyers, but there were problems with the basement. It was damp and had mold and mildew growing on some of the wood framing. It was also an unconventional basement because it was built on ledge rock which interfered with the usefulness of the space. No doubt those reasons were why the house was available for as long as it was in a very tight housing market. All other aspects of the home and lot were quite desirable.
The buyers were naturally reluctant to make the purchase because of the basement conditions, but after some consultation and receiving contractor estimates they decided to move forward.
What you don’t see in the video is the mold that was on the wood. It was significant. All mold was abated by a professional firm in accordance with rules and regulations. 
Also, not seen on the video is that pea stone was added under the vapor barrier in some of the areas to level out the grade to make the basement more usable. Also, a sump pump was added.
