I’ve had two Basenjis and at this point it’s the breed I’ll stay with for the rest of my life. They’re entertaining and great companions

Basenjis have been described as cats wearing a dog suit. Yes, they are escape artists! We had a picket fence. The pointed tops kept our dogs from climbing over. We absolutely adored our Basenjis!!

I don't know about other breeds, but another fact about our Basenjis is that they stick with their own breed. Whenever we went to dog shows and met other Basenjis, they were fixated only on them, ignoring other dogs when they were around. Our male was already 1 year old when we brought our female home. When we got the female we also took with us another Pincher puppy for someone else, that stayed with us for a day. Our dogs absolutely ignored the Pincher and played only among themselves, to the point I was feeling bad for the other dog because she wanted to join in...

They typically won’t sit all the way down on their hind-end. I’ve always heard it’s instincts from the Africa days of fire ants being a concern.

Ours do sit, but only on warm or soft surfaces 😆

They don't like water and it is difficult to get them to go out in the rain to relieve themselves. We have taken ours to the river and she is getting better about it.

We had Basenjis since I was a kid, and the cops came by to check on if my parents were doing child abuse because of our Basenjis were screaming like a kid!

Basenjis CAN bark, but do so very rarely. You might not notice it amid all the regular vocalizations.

I have a 1 year old name Cookie ..had her since 8 weeks old... She still won't come when called...I keep her on a leash and have to put her in a kennel anytime the door will be opened because she is GREAT at escaping....would appreciate any help with the recall...I've had her to a professional trainer....

We trained them with treats and gradually rewarded them less and less... I can tell you that for the first 2-3 times, they come when called, but if they get no reward, they ignore us. We only walk them on leash and set them free only in closed encounters. They learn tricks quite fast, but obedience is another thing and requires a lot of effort. You can teach them to stay, sit, give the paw, roll, jump quite fast. I saw some videos about teaching them not to pull when in leash and for most of the time it works for us. But as soon as they see an animal (dog, cat, pigeon, rat, hedgehog etc.) they go mad. I let them get close to dogs because after smelling them, they usually calm down. As they were our first dogs, we made a lot of mistakes with them in setting boundaries and having a consistent demeanor, which they absolutely need.

Yes they do have body odor, under her arm pits I could smell sweat just like human sweat, you have to smell hard cause it's not overwhelming.

Our basenji smells like corn chips/fritos.

@@alexlopez2048 , That is their sweat smell, they sweat just like humans, out of their armpits, mine use to do the same thing I would lift up her front leg to smell to see how busy she was chasing squirrels.
