Once in a blude moon, our Mercedes 2008 ML 350 has gotten "stuck" in low gear where re-booting the car (off/on) fixes the issue. Asked the dealer what the cause could be. They said, "likely the valve body, maybe easy fix with new solenoid, etc.". I had no idea what a valve body was or how it worked. Found this video and, tada!, wowza!, great tutorial! Muchas gracias! ( I noticed you using the Spanish phrase, "muy bueno" in another vid ;) ).

Had my 1997 toyota Corolla transmission rebuilt, I was there to watch the guy rebuild it and he changed the clutches but didn't touch the valve body. Now it slams into reverse, I'm thinking about a diy valve body cleaning because I do alot on my car myself, but it's quite intimidating. But great teaching

This was great. I' having a late and hard shift from 1st to 2nd, I think it is a valve issue as I already changed out both shift solenoids. Very clear instruction!

Great vid man , question, i have a 2000 excursion with the 4r100, after i tow my boat to the water 1 hr away, when i go into park then shift to drive it is super delayed or not at all. Could i replace the accumulator valve body main valve body and solonoid valve body and filter could possibly fix my problem? Regular driving is no prob at all and trans temps dont ever go over 180 degrees. Thank u

Very fascinating subject. I've got a question to ask. Will the springs at the end of these spools become fatigued over the years and cause shifting irregularities, let's say in the 2-3 clutch circuit, which then sets a fault code?
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 3 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered this as well. Supposedly it's not really an issue. The valve springs don't stroke that much in relation to their total possible travel, so they don't loose tension over time. One would sure think that with heat and years of use that they would though.

Great video and insightful! Got a quick question: in my 2015 Hyundai Genesis g80, no DTCs, TCM updated, ATF changed multiple times, all solenoids replaced, wiring harness and Transmission speed and temp sensors replaced, however I still get harsh up shift from 4th to 5th gear only, and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd gear. They are operated by 35RC solenoid which is already replaced. Could the problem be inside the valve body? What do you think? Thx!

06 Nissan maxima. I'm having hard shift from 1-2 and 2-3 and down shift. Reverse jerks pretty bad. New OEM camshaft sensors worked temporarily. Poor fluid pressure or stuck/faulty solenoid maybe?

I really wonder what are the valve body and spool made of? Also which manufacturing proceses are done with them?
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 2 жыл бұрын
The valve bodies are cast aluminum. Most valves are anodized aluminum, but some are machines from steel. Older transmissions commonly used cast iron valve bodies.

What do the valves pressurize? How do they pressurize and how is pressure created? Where does the transmission fluid flow? Is it directly injected into the clutches somehow?
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 3 жыл бұрын
Did you check out all of the videos in the basic series? The oil pump generates the pressure and it’s driven by the engine via the torque converter. The valves direct or modify this pressure to where it needs to go, such as the clutches , lubrication, torque converter, etc.

If an automatic transmission is to skip/shudder for a second then re-engage in first gear, what could be the problem? Is it commonplace or a regular procedure to individually test solenoids?
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 3 жыл бұрын
Regarding skip/shudder, that is usually due to low pressure applying a clutch from leaks in the clutch circuit. Regarding solenoids, It really depends on the application. Many will ohm check solenoids, replace commonly faulty solenoids, or blow air through them and energize them.

Great explanation on what is going on in a valve body. This is a very simple introduction to the idea of a spool valve: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYKzqKmNjceJadk. You point out which ports are supplying line pressure. My question is given a random valve body dropped on the bench- is there some way to decipher/trace that flow? Or do you need a schematic to figure it out?

Hi, I have a problem in my A/T that confused many mechanics: At first start only, R direclty engages as normal but DRIVE does not unless engine is running for like 5 minutes and a push on the throtlle, and it engages with a bump, while reverse engages immediately and smoothly. They said if it is a solenoid problem, both D and R will have the problem, any opinion?

Is there any reason why the solenoids aré P.W.M. rather than a variable D.C. linear voltage similar to a Potentiometer ???
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 3 жыл бұрын
I'd have to guess it's for more accurate control and because it's probably easier for a transistorized circuit to modulate vs. vary an analogue signal. Most variable voltage circuits are inputs, like position sensors. Most output circuits are simply ON/OFF or modulated, like injectors, coils, and all different types of solenoids. I'm not an electrical engineer, but that's my best guess.

@@siuautomotive is that why they say that the solenoids can burn out if D.C. is applied I guess
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the lower resistance solenoids typically don’t get pulsed at more than 50%, so putting them straight to battery power would put more current through them than intended. With that said, I’ve powered them up with 12v for a short time without problem

Can a transmission carry open solenoids alone
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I know what you mean. If you mean, could they have solenoids that are always normally open (or flowing with no power), then yes, they could. If you mean open as in "not enclosed into the transmission," then yes, there are some transmissions that have the solenoids external to the transmission, like many Honda 5-speeds and the Honda 6-speeds.
