I thought I was the only one who cranks up the centre channel a db or two. Dialogue in movies tend to be less audible with the auto settings. Good to hear you feel the same way too.

GREAT TUTORIAL VIDEO, thanks...This is the basic and fundamental rule of thumb when set up a new system. The most important part is how your ear listen and feel after these steps are done. And invest a couple more hours into trial and error to get it to the closest feel u want. I spent a couple of days going back to tinkle with the subs and room correction, and it's WORTH it!.

I like to make a few tweaks to what Yamaha's YPAO room equalization does. All of my speakers are two or three-way speakers, so it sets them all to Large. I set my surrounds, old Paradigm Studio 20s, to small - same with my rear surrounds, even smaller Boston Audios, but I leave my front trio, which are Studio 40s and a Paradigm center that's essentially the same speaker on its side, set to large - and I set Left and Right front to play their own low bass but also send it to the sub. (This is my answer to multiple subs.) In my RX-A1030 that settng's called Extra Bass. Since the mikes used by all of these room equalization systems point at the ceiling, they disregard the effect of the pinnae of our ears in attenuating sound from the rear. I compensate by traveling the test tone (in the post YPAO tweak screen) around the room while facing forward, and nudging the level of the rears up a db or so until they're the same perceived level as the other channels. I will try adding 1.5db to the front center channel - but it may not be necessary in my room, since it's mounted above the screen at ceiling level, giving a bit of a "horn" effect.

Great video. Gene, with all his knowledge, still explains so that even knuckleheads like me can follow it. I have a Pioneer VSX-LX302 receiver that defaults the front speaker setting from small to large when I select the 2 subwoofer setting. When I switch the fronts back to small, the system de-selects the 2 sub setting. Their IT guy didn't really explain why, just said that it is the correct setting, and to leave the fronts on large. Any ideas? Otherwise I'm very happy with the receiver. Good bang for the buck.

Hi Gene and Hugo, I've got into some problem with my home theater. I did set all the speaker to small @80hz, I set the sub's crossover to 95hz. The main concern is my dynamic isn't there regarding the relationship between my Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 5 speakers, with my Pioneer Elite receiver. My receiver's volume range is from -81.5dB to +15dB, to get an acceptable volume out of the Definitive Technology speakers, I have to crank up my volume in the -20's dB to -10's dB. All of my 4 speakers comes with a 1" tweeter plus a 3.25" mid bass with 3.25" with a passive radiator. The center has a 1" tweeter with a dual 3.25" mid bass with 2 3.25" passive radiator. The sub has a 8" front firing woofer with a 8" down firing passive radiator. Did I make a correct choice with the Definitive Technology ProCinema 600, with my Pioneer Elite receiver?

I have a Yamaha RX-V665 7.2 A/V receiver with Klipsch Synergy speakers. System is setup as a 7.1 system. I took your recommendations and set everything to small and at 80 Hz. But when I use the YPAO microphone it changes the front speakers (F3) to large and the Surround L/R to large (S-2). And crossover is changed from 80 Hz to 110 Hz. My sub is the Klipsch SW-450. Would it be best to go with the manual settings or with the YPAO settings. My room is 20 feet long by 12 feet wide by 7.5 feet in height. The only speaker that stays in the small setting is the center speaker.

Now that was an extremely helpful video. I love and watch Audioholic videos but this was a bit different. I would like to see more of Gene doing hands on demos of actual setups in menus of HT receivers. I've been into HT and high end sound for like 15 years and I still make mistakes, and still have no clue on a lot of the settings in these sophisticated HT receivers. QUESTION: I've always been told that when the subwoofer is in Front, the Phase should be "0" or "Normal" while if the subwoofer is in the Back of the room the Phase should be "180" or "Reverse." I fully understand that. For example, if you had the subwoofer in Front, you would make the A/V Receiver say "0" and the Subwoofer would be at "0." I become confused when the subwoofer is put in back. When the subwoofer is in back, does that mean the subwoofer should remain at "0" on the subwoofer itself and only put on "180" or "Reverse" on the A/V Receiver? ... Or, should BOTH the subwoofer speaker AND the A/V Receiver be set to "Reverse" or "180." I'm just wondering if having both the A/V Receiver AND subwoofer set to "180" or "Reverse" will double the effect and make it so there is no longer a "reverse" effect. ... Thank you.

Audioholics can I ask a question I did what u said in video set speakers all to small cross over was 80hz left LFE AT 120 on the subwoofer and watched ruronii kenshin kyoto inferno, but for some reason it did not sound as amazing as ruronii kenshin I watched the night before so I stopped it done Audyssey restore looked at cross over for all speakers except sub were 40hz I dnt use any of the other Audyssey EQ and so on only thing I changed was dialogue to + 4db I've limited my volume to 80db only we a 2 year old . But for me the movie sounded amazing and more richer. I'm using denon x4200 connected to denon 3313ud amazing player still if displayed on a calibrated screen no need for 4k for me yet lol speakers are 7.1 set up of dali zensor 7 for front left, right, dali vocal, dali E -12F , dali zensor 3 for my back 4 channels on custom design signature fs104 speaker stands each of my zensor 3 and vocal all have atacam isolation gel pads, and the stands have 7 kg of attacam attabites in each stand, speaker cables are QED genesis sliver spiral for front 3 channels and for back 4 channels it's qed silver anniversary xt and subwoofer cable is x2 qed signature subwoofer cable I use left and right on the subwoofer. for me I think that extra bass back into tge speakers for my ears don't seem to take away much from what it was a 80hz but adds back to it for me the dali speakers are very detailed for movies the bass just gave it more authority. am I wrong to be leaving my settings at 40hz what Audyssey recommend and I've left zensor 7 and vocal to large. I've been into movies since the Sony 735 and have carried on im no expert like you guys but I think I know what im doing thank you

Great tutorial. If you were to have tower speakers would you use the “large” speaker setting instead of the small. And then allow for bass from sub and front speakers? Or do you simply recommend using the small setting?
@rudolfhuijs4526
@rudolfhuijs4526 4 жыл бұрын
I think they did a video on that matter, large vs small. They said if your towers had a 10 inch driver, then yes you can set them to large, otherwise set them to small. A decent sub will make a better job taking care of low freqs, besides you ease up a bit the power amp in your receiver. Just remember the crossover point is not a physical wall, there's some roll off above and under the crossover. Usually, never set your bass to sub + fronts, it sounds overwhelming. But anyway try, there's no right or wrong.
@MrRlaureano
@MrRlaureano 8 жыл бұрын
I agree with the recommendation that setting the crossover of the main speakers (front, center, surround) to 80Hz or above is better for acoustics. All sound below 80Hz will go to the subwoofer when the AV receiver has the main speakers set to SMALL and the subwoofer set to LFE. However, what I don't quite agree on is setting the subwoofer crossover automatically to 120Hz. The reason why people experience muddy sound is likely due to BOTH main speakers and subwoofer having OVERLAPPING SOUND between 80Hz and 120Hz! From a technical perspective and from my experience, I find the bass to be more seamless when setting the AVR to have BOTH main speaker crossover set to 100Hz AND the subwoofer crossover set to 100Hz! This is also with the speakers set to LARGE and the subwoofer set to LFE+Main on the AVR (more on this later). Even though my main speakers can go down to 60Hz (as determined by Audyssey, and the frequency range of my speakers) doesn't mean I should automatically set the crossover to 60Hz or even 80Hz. Looking at the frequency graphs of my bookshelf speakers show that the DB sound level starts to taper down starting at 100Hz! If I were set the crossover below 100Hz, the main speakers would struggle to produce volume between 60Hz to 100Hz. Since my subwoofer volume is flat across the 150Hz down to 20Hz frequency range, it makes more sense to have the subwoofer produce sound from 100Hz and below since it can produce more consistent volume levels at that range. So why set the speakers to LARGE (vs. SMALL) and the subwoofer to LFE+Main (vs. just LFE)? The reason for this is so that ALL frequencies are sent to the main speakers ABOVE the crossover point. Also, any LFE signal PLUS bass frequencies intended for the main speakers would go to the subwoofer. The sound produced with this setup gives the impression of much larger main speakers compared to when the speakers are just set to SMALL and the subwoofer set to LFE on the AVR. When set to SMALL + LFE only, the AVR sends ONLY the LFE signal to the subwoofer WITHOUT sending the bass intended for the main speakers due to DSP circuits removing frequencies it doesn't believe small speakers can handle.

Robert Laureano I tried both way bro! The small, LFE and 80 sounded better to me. Sounded muffled in stereo. Only thing I could think it is. The tower speakers 8” and sub is a 12”. Maybe a different effect thing going on. Don’t know. That’s for your input. It all help! Larry

Low pass filter on your sub should be disabled if you're using bass management in your AVR. Phase is something you should have a friend adjust while you sit at the listening position playing bass intense music to see what gives you the best integration between the sub(s) and main speakers.

Why do you set you volume max to +10db? As you said -5db is about as loud as you crank your vol up. Just curious as I thought going past 0db isn't a good thing or that reference was 0db. Could you also go into more detail on how you setup the distance for your subs? You mentioned that you have them set to 16ft and not the 8ft they measure?? Great Vids please keep them coming.

I choose +10 in those moments when we have house parties and really want to crank it up. Normal listening levels for movies is usually -20dB. Sub distance depends on many factors which is why I like to try to measure with REW or at least an SPL meter with the subs and main speakers playing simultaneously. I can do a video on this.

Curious. Why don't you want to have subwoofer and front enabled? When is it advisablek to have both the subwoofer and front enabled? I also listen to music with my setup and have always had my system setup to LFE+Main. I have it crossed over @120 for music and 80 for movies, but have to admit that I sometimes forget and leave it at 120 for movies. Thanks
@Baerchenization
@Baerchenization 5 жыл бұрын
The low frequencies are the ones that make an amp struggle, so you "unload" that task to your sub. You want to cross over at 80-100 Hz because that is about where the human ear starts to locate the source of the sound in the room (120 may work fine for you personally), while below that we can't really tell. Anyway, I am writing because I see you are not entirely clear as to what you are doing there. LFE connection stands for Low Frequency Effects-channel. That is an extra channel on movies discs that support it for certain sound effects. So any stereo music you listen to does not have that channel to begin with and you wanna plug it in via the standard subwoofer connection.

Having a +dB on your fronts does that make them louder or more bass?I thought it was the other way round plus the max volume as well. I watch some videos that says different. I'm completely confused!

buster colin Adjusting to + dB makes your speakers louder. In the Yamahas there are different SOUND PROGRAMS and in some of them you can adjust the output level as well, i.e. for the 7.1 mode there is an adjustment from -5 to +5 and it increases the whole output levels just for that sound program. I highly recommend doing an auto set-up using the YPAO device. But first write down all these level and distance readings, because YPAO would overwrite those level and distance readings. From there I suggest to do some EQ correction to fine tune frequency, bandwith and gain, although this is considered advanced set-up. It's like setting an equalizer, but this is more dynamic. Sometimes it's better to disconnect the speakers you aren't adjusting. Listen to dif sources, and adjust accordingly, it is a subjective matter, there is no right or wrong. Use the test tone function and an SPL meter or get an app to get check output values. The manual adjustment gets stored as MANUAL and your reference would be the YPAO NATURAL, FRONT or FLAT. Listen to your favourite sources and switch between YPAO parameters. Be patient, these could take hours! Have fun.

Can someone please help me... I have a 5.1 channel home Theatre system which doesn't have an LFE output nor does it have a 2.0 setup. How will I connect an active subwoofer to it, should I use the high-/speaker subwoofer output to the active sub and then back to the passive sub, I don't think the left and right front speakers get low frequencies as they are sent to the subwoofer... And how effective is this technique, using the speaker level inputs, will that influence the frequency response of the active sub or lead to greater distortion? Really how someone knowledgeable can help...

I LOVE Yamaha. Recently i replaced 5.1 chanel Yamaha RX-V483 system by 7.2 chanel Sony STRD-H7700 , was thinking 2 exrta speakers and +1 Sub will give me a REAL BOOST but what a shame, Sony can't even keep up with lower chanel Yamaha, Sony got very low PUNCH effect on speakers. Maybe i need to change something in settings (sorry, got no calibration Microphone). Is 7.2 chanel Sony STRD-H7700 audio quality at same level as Yamaha? Do you recommend go back to 5.1 Yamaha instead higher chanel 7.2 Sony?

Thanks for a terrific video, especially for me getting a new Yamaha receiver. You mentioned raising the center speaker + 1.5 db because the dialogue in movies is frequently too low - which I agree. But I noticed that you also have both fronts set for + 6.0 db - now wouldn't that be what is creating more problems? Relatively speaking, you've boosted your front sides far more than the center, which I would think would be boosted more than the fronts.

How do we know what our hz set up is suppose to be? I have energy take classic speakers.. Sat: 115Hz-20KHz; Center: 110Hz-20KHz; That’s the info for them. What do I set them to and how do I make the right settings for subwoofer related to my speakers? Thank you.

I am an owner of a working Take Energy Speakers 5.1 system. Only a small powered AVR is required. The whole system is designed for a small room. For a relatively small room the 5.1 Take Energy Speaker system works very well and also the surround speakers look good on the walls. Please note that my Take Energy subwoofer is a down firing 8 inch subwoofer which I believe is standard with the 5.1 package. Your subwoofer db levels are sensitive to the subwoofer room location and type of floor. Subwoofer settings: The subwoofer has an important role considering all your very small Take Energy speakers. The subwoofer db settings would depend on your taste and your room configuration. I personally have my subwoofer in a location that is safe from foot traffic rather than a more audio appealing place in the room. The recommended subwoofer db setting resulting from the test with the microphone used in my AVR audyssey option did not satisfy me. Tweaking subwoofer db levels was necessary for me . Speaker settings: The THX recommendation of 80Hz did not perform well for me. I set all 5 speakers at 120Hz for my Onkyo 515. I recommend setting your speakers as small if that option is available for your AVR. Loss of audible dialogue especially noticeable from the front channel occurs when the room is too big for a Take Energy 5.1 system. My other Audio systems consist of bigger speakers with bigger amplifiers for bigger rooms.

So my Pioneer Elite AVR has the option for "Plus" (LFE+MAIN) with Small speaker setting which doesn't seem common as most receivers the default and only setting is Small and Yes. Anyone have any thoughts on this as to why Pio have this option and what it means with speakers set to small?

It's redundent to have "LFE + Main" if your speakers are set to small since the sub will receive LFE plus mains bass along with ALL channels set to small.

If there isn't one, then you'd have to assume the receiver is defaulting to 120Hz for LFE regardless of XOVER setting, or its setting it to the actual crossover setting. Most of the newer receivers do keep this independent from my understanding.

Two questions: 1. Why setup the front L, R and C channels as small if you have bigger, floorstanding speakers and a good size matching center? My understanding of Small vs Large is that when it is Small, the receiver does not send the whole range of frequencies on the lower end. 2. Why setup all speakers at 80Hz crossover? Shouldn't this be a per speaker model setting, depending what the lower size Hz value is? For example if my front towers have a low 48Hz, shouldn't I be setting the cutover around that value, rounding a bit up (eg.maybe around 55Hz or so?)

Im not a sound audio tech here but my simple work around was using a Y-Jack (1 male/2 female ends) and connected the subs front and back. Im not sure why you would connect them right to left. If thats the case...the balance/fader should be set in the 'middle/0" so the sound can be equally distributed to both subs. As I've said, I'm not a sound tech here!!

Hey, you didn't show the crossover level for the sub. Did you set that for 80hz as well? Or is that higher now that it is a sub?.. and a dilemma is the LFE i can regulate at the back of my subwoofer, I have been advised to set that at 80hz as well but at my Denon AVR I have been advised to set that to well over 100hz, for my sub. that is, why should I have two different crossover settings for my sub. one at the back on subwoofer itself and another for the menu at my avr?
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 7 жыл бұрын
If you're using an AV receiver with bass management, bypass or turn the dial of subwoofer crossover all the way up to the max setting. You usually don't want to use both crossovers, especially at the same frequency (aka. cascading) as it could cause an uneven response.
@AntonioPenja

Thanks for all the videos and thank you very much for the answer. Just to be clear, I'm not a native english speaker so in order not to have any misunderstrandings, do you recomend to turn the crossover level all the way up in the settings on my AVR or the LFE regulator on the acutal subwoofer? Or on both of them?

Large doesn't just mean big physical size. A large speaker should have enough piston area to produce meaningful output down to 25Hz. If it doesn't, using the small setting is usually a better option in most cases.
