I understand straight tongs and hoop tongs that have a 90 degree bend, but what i don’t understand is off center tongs that have a 45 degree angle to them

Hard to say without seeing a picture but it sounds like regular offset tongs that are used for holding the middle section of a long bar. Some makers today have a section of the jaws going at a 45 to the handles but the actual bit holding the work is still parallel to the handles like regular offset tongs.

I have maybe 10 pairs of tongs I’ve made and not one pair can hold a piece of steel. They are junk! I’m going to keep trying maybe by the time I make 10 more ,they might not get slung across the floor !
