great video and a very useful comparison at the end. You have a way of making forging look uncomplicated which I like. I feel inspires confidence for the newer smith. Thanks for sharing

Denis, does the type of steel matter when it comes to making tongs or can you use any type of steel that’s lying around? Just to clarify, does it have to be a tool steel or does plain mild steel work as well?

You want to use mild steel for tongs, because they go in and out of the forge so much that starting with low Carbon, because they will become low Carbon anyway after use.

I use mild steel for all my tongs. Some do use spring steel because it has a higher strength to weight ratio but I prefer heavier tongs so that isn't an issue for me. Also the range of stock sizes that are available in mild steel is a big advantage.

Good afternoon Dennis, I just refurbished my in-laws old hand crank forge blower, (Champion Blower & Forge Co). It has a single gearbox, and does not run near as smooth as yours. But, I am thinking that it will be better for me than the small bouncy house electric blower with a 'diverter box' to keep from pushing too much air into firebox. (I burn up metal all the time still 😢). How do you recommend that I build the Tuyere? (Is flexible exhaust tubing ok? Or is it best to build it out of steel pipe?) I built this firebox out of steel and have a bottom blast configuration. Do you think it is okay to leave the existing electric blower connected and make a second entry to the vertical part of the Tuyere? Or, should I put a Y in the horizontal section so either can be used? Or, is keeping both connected likely to cause a massive drop in air reaching the firebox by exiting the the unused blower? If it is this last case, I would need to find a way to switch the entry location of the air from the right to the left since the hand blower is built to be cranked by the left hand. Thank you for all your help once again!! Sincerely, Alan Butler

I would use the flex pipe and the simplest connection possible to figure out what needs to be done. After that, take the time to design and build what you need. Usually the electric blower is fed into the intake of the hand cranked blower but that was just because it was a later addition. They can both have their own line if they each have a good gate valve to prevent any loss of air.

@@df-intheshop330 Thank you Dennis! I will need to design & build a gate valve. I hadn't thought that part out yet. Thanks again for the direction!! Have a great day!
