Gum disease is the most common preventable disease in adults. It is usually caused by plaque bacteria that causes irritation and inflammation of the gums, periodontal ligaments, and supporting bone.
Treatment involves removing this plaque biofilm. Early stages of gum disease (gingivitis) is reversible. However if left untreated, the periodontal ligaments (PDL) will become affected and there will be attachment loss. This results in periodontal pockets. It is even harder to clean and remove the bacteria from these pockets as access is more difficult and you will need professional cleaning and advice.
If left untreated, it will start affecting the bone supporting the teeth. resulting in bone loss. This irreversible attachment loss is called periodontitis.
Treatment is now usually aimed at slowing down the progress of disease, and stabilising the attachment loss.
Severe untreated gum disease can result in tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss, and gum disease is the number 1 cause of tooth loss in adults.

Thanks for doing all these videos! I think dentists in my experience sometimes take for granted that not everyone knows much about teeth & how to take care of them or why certain things happen. This really makes it harder for most people to know what they need to take care of their teeth well. I wish you were closer bc I could definitely use a dentist that does more education to empower the patients rather than just letting them continue to think their routine is fine and eventually need a drilling.

cheesy cheez thank you for your feedback and I'm really glad I can help you still (from afar). I believe patient education is so important as most dental problems are preventable. I hate drilling teeth if I can prevent it !! So much better to give people the knowledge to help themselves!

Sadly, once the guns recede, the only thing left to do is get a gum graft eventually. I Used to over-brush. Was hoping mine would get better, but they continue to recede slowly, despite going to the dentist every 6 months. Think my recession is like 3/4 on some teeth. Oh well.

I had my lower back tooth (the 2nd to the last) removed because it literally cracked. My dentist is recommending implants or bridge. Which one do you think is better long term?
