I am currently 11 years old and I really enjoy this configuration of Windows Server 2012 because, I am a geek at IT and I love using computers for configuration or setting them up and some people say that learning very complex stuff at this age is surprising but later in my like, I'll remember who taught me configuring a server on KZbin! I know you made this video in 2013 but, you are really good and I completely understand what you say to me! I hope you would make more IT videos but anyways, keep it up :)

Attention!! I went through many hours furiously trying to figure out why I couldn't get my server connected to my "lab" router. It turned out I had to set the network adapter in Virtualbox to "bridged" and not NAT (which is the default setting). Just thought someone else was struggling with the same issue. ;)

In case anyone have problems authorizing the DHCP server, make sure that your account is part of the domain admins and that your account password is set to meet complexity requirements for when you have to use credentials. To be safe you should specify the account rather than use the first option. Push comes to shove create a new user with the appropriate permissions and authorize from that account. Worked for me. This is if you get the error code 20070.

Great video but something critical that had me scratching my head. Maybe I missed it, but you have to select your DHCP server then click Actions>Authorize. Also note your account needs to be a domain admin to have the option. If you set up in vmware, you will need to login as Administrator and add your account to the domain admin group from the Active Directory Administrative Center.

A work around with having 2 dhcp services running is to have 1 leasing a pool like the dhcp on server and another on the home routers leasing a differnt pool. but all within the same subnet, for /24 you got .1-.254 addresses in the pool to use .1 = gateway, .2 = pc, .3-.20 = server dhcp, .21-. 50 = router dhcp, .51-.100 = network and so on. keep it in pools so leases arnt overlapping and you shouldn't have a issue.

First thanks for the outstanding lessons You are saying that a client computer will use the secondary DNS adress to solve a querry outside the windows domain,but I think it will not use the secondary server because the primary server(the DC) can do the querry of it self,only if is forwarding is configured on the DNS server on the DC for querrys outside the domain then the primary DNS server is used or better the client uses the primary DNSserver and the primary use thesecondary for forwarding

I know for a fact, at some point, during setup (in Server 2008 R2), your primary DNS ip can change after a computer restart. It changes to localhost 127.0.0.1. You would need to go to your adapter settings to reconfigure it again. In my case, the VM was attached to Bridged Adapter in VM options (aka Hub), which was connected to my host's (my physical machine) network adapter (wireless), which also was active at the time I wrote this message.

Greetings from sunny Ireland Eli. Your videos have been great, not just the ones on windows server 2012 but also your recent ones as you tour around America ...Awesome. Anyways i'm using a windows hosted vps with windows server 2012 on it. Is there any difference in DHCP config in this case? Cheers Gareth
@ovidiuluchian9 жыл бұрын
+Gareth Moore The VPS is a remote site and it has a public address. If you would set that Windows Server as a DHCP server would be simply unreliable because if your internet connection dies you won't get an IP address on your workstations. If I understand this correctly (and i may not, since i am learning this right now aswell) you will need to setup a VPN between your server and your router (this will make the network your computers are part of as a "local network" to your server) then the configuration is very similar provided the router doesn't drop your DHCP requests because of firewall settings.

Hi Eli, Love your work. It's making it a bit easier for a complete noob like myself understand better. But this episode went beyond me. I don't have enough characters to explain why I have WS2012, but I do, and I'm a pretty quick learner, but are coming from a background with zero familiarity. I was doing ok, until this class. I don't have a static IP, I'm using a regular dynamic IP (in France). I tried hard coding the 10.1.10.x address you did, but could no longer connect to the internet.

Hi Eli, thanks for posting this informative video. My question regarding your comment about turning off DHCP on the modem when using Microsoft DHCP is that if I connect a separate router to my default gateway to create a lab for my server and I turn off my default gateway's DHCP, will I need to manually assign IP addresses to my home devices?

I'm currently training for my MCSA exams and i've only setup an Active Directory server once. Your videos are very informative. I have subscribed and I look forward to your future videos. One question though. As the maximum range is .254 in IPv4, would I need to setup a secondary DC in order for more clients to connect?
@sonarwolf28 жыл бұрын
+Isaac Blackburn U Just need to use a different Subnet mask like 255.255.0.0, than u could use 254*254 IP Adresses for my understanding of Networking

Great lesson. You mentioned " Turning off the DHCP functionality on the Router ".. However, what if there are other clients ( ie. devices that only regular internet access and do not need to access the Domain. At this point would it not be wiser to SUBNET the DHCP Server instead?..
@berndeckenfels5 жыл бұрын
Don’t set up different dns tiers as alternate dns servers in dhcp, set up two (win) dns servers who know the domain and hand them out in dhcp - and add the gateway (or resolvers isp) only as forwarded in win dns.
