In this 8th lesson in the Folk Fingerstyle Modules we look at combining melody with the fingerstyle patterns covered so far and play the Australian classic Waltzing Matilda in open position. This is an intermediate level lesson. There is a more complex version with much more embellishment on the DVD (one of the bonus lessons!). TAB is on the web site!
Find the related course notes on the following link

Whole series will be on the web site and a DVD is available with some bonus material! See the web site for more details!

Hey Justin, Have you ever thought of doing something like a small "box" in the corner of the screen to show where your left hand is when you zoom in on the finger picking part?

So much love directed at you right now!! Been fumbling around the chords for my preferred version of Waltzing Matilda for weeks and it seems I was *almost* there. I wish I'd found this earlier.

This is the single best video I have ever seen for showing how to get the syncopation between the bass line and the melody. Thanks!!

i find that with finger picking songs, by seperating the left and right hand i get confused when my left hand should be hitting what notes. i think the box would be a great addition to your videos. thanks for the lesson, great choice of tunes!

For my two cents - because it's a video we can re-watch it as many times as we like. Skrpirate's idea is a good one, so if it's not too much work for you I know I'd really appreciate having such a zoom and being able to re-watch and observe the finger position closely... at least in part because this is the 4th time I'm watching this through, and I'm doing so in full-screen so I can watch your left hand! :)

Good enough! Even a pomme like me can play. I think it would be good intro to a tune I have featuring a didgeridoo claves and two banjos and two guitars, tale of the Aboriginal people and dream time as a juxtaposed thing.

Hey Justin, this might sound like an odd request, but could you tell us about the manner in which you shape your fingernails for finger style playing? I've read a few articles on many different "shapes", but have never found a good explanation as to why certain shapes are better than others (i.e. nylon vs. steel playing, etc...). Cheers.

@erikhayabusa Hey erikhyabusa, sorry for the late reply. I think Waits took the song structure and wrote his own lyrics to the music. I suppose it depends on you definition of cover. ... and yes, I am to lazy to look it up right now. ; )

Hi Justin! I really really wanna learn this song! Butum, is there any way you could write it down in the format like this which could be easier: _Chord 1:... Strumming pattern:... _Chord 2:... Strumming pattern:... Etc.. Man, then we'll just love yah! :)

@vividhkothari4470
@vividhkothari4470 6 жыл бұрын
People, listen, Justin's goal here is not to teach you this melody. That's why no tab, that's why he is asking to figure out the melody by yourself. The video is more about "combining melody with the fingerstyle pattern," rather than just learning "Waltzing Matilda."

Because this lesson is a part of a course meant for intermediate players. If you have followed the course all along this should be no problem, or you might need some extra work.

It’s a Scottish song not Australian.
@dereklayman2452
@dereklayman2452 3 жыл бұрын
Wrong. It's based on a Scottish poem called _Thou Bonnie Wood of Craigiele._ But Waltzing Matilda was created by Banjo Paterson, who is an Australian.
@alexander6399
@alexander6399 3 жыл бұрын
The tune is a Scottish march, the lyrics are by an Australian. Same as most songs whereas they take a tune and put their own lyrics to it, nothing wrong with it.
