Great video! Please continue with the series. OpenBIM will be the way to go in the near future. Finding resources to correctly work with IFC in Revit for me has been difficult. Again great video, eager to see more of your content.

Thank you for this great video. It has always been difficult to find good IFC manuals or tutorials. The Autodesk Revit IFC Manual was a good first step, but personally I like to learn by using video tutorials. I subscribed to your channel, and am looking forward to your future videos.

Thank you for sharing this content Lejla! Until you started this series, information on IFC for non-programmers was scattered on the internet. I think we were all waiting for a series like this to be released. It is even better coming from you, the author of the official handbook for Revit.

Thanks Murillo, I'm really glad you find my content helpful! :) Btw, I initiated the IFC Manual on the Autodesk side and also wrote the concept and some few parts, however the main part was done by other experts (mainly Tim Brückner how is now with VRAME).

HI! Is it possible to create PARTS using a ifc linked file in revit? I have a linked IFC model file that whenever I try to create parts in revit from it shows me this message "Invalid shape found in original. Parts could not be created ". Any idea? thanks!

I think there is a main misconception of IFC. In contrast to Revit, IFC does not limit the creation of geometry based on the IFC-class / category. In fact, one does not need geometry at all - or you can add as many geometries as you need. Once one gets their head around this concept it becomes clear how limited Revit is compared to a full fledged IFC implementation (hope this will be available one day)

Thanks for your comment - my aim is to focus on what is possible now and useful for a designer / engineer working in Revit. There are many things we can improve around the openBIM process and the IFC quality by being aware of how things work now.

at last someone talking about IFC in revit .... have you ever dealt with import of Tekla Structure IFC and dealing with the category's that the Tekla IFC items import into revit ...im looking at a way to control what category they come in as ... as at the moment anything horizontal is a structural framing category ...could this be changed to a wall for example ...

Hi Lejla, Great Informative Video thanks. I would like to as Is it possible to change entities? Can I export IFCrailing as a IFC wall? Thanks Looking forward to you reply
@BIMmeup2 жыл бұрын
Hi Parimal, thanks for your comment! Yes, you can export a Revit Wall as an IFC Railing and so on, but you must be aware of the fact that different entities have different standard properties and that the exporter can only map the properties which it finds in the correct place. For example, a wall has a completely different structure with layers, fire rating and so son, which a railing doesn’t (though again, the railing has other properties relevant to its own category). So basically, the answer is yes, but you need to double check the properties after the export. There is a great list of all possible category mappings in Revit in this article: knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Supported-IFC-Class-mapping-when-exporting-Revit-models-to-IFC.html

Hi Lejla, Thank you for the informative video. Does this mean if we are creating families and components on Revit we need to identify it's parameters as per the IFC property set identified by building smart? Regards, Anas.
@BIMmeup3 жыл бұрын
Hi Anas, if you are producing content to be used in an openBIM workflow, it makes sense to include the relevant IFC properties on family level and populate them. You can do this just the same way as on project level. If you have any more specific questions, let me know and I will try to cover it in a video!

These videos you made are pure gold, thankyou! Sometimes I wonder if it will be possible to override system family IFC category, for example to use a curtain wall to make a railing, and to export it as railing (the same to use it as a Window...) What do you think about it? I know that if I don't wanna have problems I have to stick with the correct category but I mean, Curtain Walls are one of the most versatile objects in Revit, so wouldn't it be wonderful to simply remap it into something else?
@BIMmeup3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and the great feedback, really means a lot! :) The restrictions on system families are slowly being lifted, e.g. you could already export a regular wall as a railing - with curtain walls it is a bit more complex, though I get your point. One thing to keep in mind however: when mapping Revit categories to classes they were not intended for, the common property sets cannot be correctly assigned (e.g. a curtain wall doesn't have the same parameters like a railing in Revit, so only the data which is there in Revit can be exported to IFC). Hope this makes sense? Anyway, I'll try documenting what can be mapped to what, as I know this is a common usecase.

You hopefully found this out that you need to use IFC2. Of course you might not be able to have all the sheets set up, and hey now you can actually use the scale tool to adjust the walls, instead of with dimensions.
