How do you get a bend to the right from the left of the horse? Or would you draw the horse towards you to get a more half-pass type movement?

Gretchen Austin thanks for your question. You'd softly engage the right rein and "travel" that way with your left hand directing the outside of the body (left) to bend to the right.

Is the jaw release needed even without a bit? Is it intended to release tension that would negatively affect the rest of the musculature or is it to soften the mouth to the bit? I have a horse who can not be ridden so we try and do strength training from the ground so she stays fit and her mouth bruises easily so no bit. Should I still be practicing the jaw release with just my fingers if it is for relieving tension?
