In this video, I am covering how to do in hand work with horses for beginners. In hand work is such a great activity to strengthen your horse, improve flexibility, responsiveness under saddle, and improve the relationship with your horse. I cover three in hand work exercises to practice. If you are a beginner learning, remember to reward the little tries. With a little practice, it won't be long before your horse picks this up :)
There are more types of ways to do in hand work with horses, but this should provide some basics to start. I hope this helps with your horse! 😊

Thank you! I would love more videos on in hand work! It's been 12 years since I had a horse and I have access to two now but I've forgotten so much groundwork and it's been very difficult to find good videos on it.

Thank you for explaining what to do if your horse objects to what you’re doing at first! Almost nobody does, and I’m working with an unbroken filly. She objects to everything.

I have a question, when is it the right time to get a horse? Good video btw 🥰🐴
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Hi REE😊 Thank you 🐴 The right time to get a horse depends on your experience and Financial situation. If you have never owned a horse before you can try leasing before purchasing. Doing a half or full lease on a horse is a great way to get a feel for what it’s like to own a horse without the Financial responsibility that comes with purchasing😀🐎

My horse was previously abused with whips so I can't use whips how do I that then?
@Narlanas

You can teach visible cues (ie pointing with your hand) I've done that, combined with other body language you can give rather precise cues, but it's harder (mainly for the human tho 😅) but you can also use any object that look very different like a peacock feather, a duster or a pool noodle. Hopefully your horse don't connect those with the horrible experience he or she has with wips. You could also re-condtion the wip as something positive but that's harder. It could be difficult to know if the horse react because he/she wants to listen to the cue or if he/she is still deep down scared of the consequence of not doing so.

Use hand pressure or a stick with a small flag or feathers, like a duster perhaps. Make sure you can touch, caress him everywhere with duster, before starting to desensitize him to the whip. Bringing treats with the whip nearby. Brushing with the whip nearby and slowly start caressing with the whip until you touch him everywhere. Scratch under his chest with your hand & interchange with the whip for scratching... Or You can use a long whip with a flag and start away from his body. Move it slowly,until you can use it all over, under and above him. Then, move it quicker progressively until you can snap and shake it vigorously without him moving or being alarmed. I watch an Aussie trainer on KZbin who's pretty good at this: The TRT Training Method. Although I wish he would talk and caress the horses more, so they know when they've done what he wants... Wishing you all the best! Slow and steady is best. If you get frustrated, quit for the day. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKi2hGCAqqyildU
