When I was in high school, 1980's, I worked in a family owned department store. The owners were Jewish Russian immigrants (WWII) that came to our Canadian town. Back in the day, they would make suits made to measure. The other thing is that Mrs Litwin would make anyone look awesome. She had an eye for what looked good on any body type. You would typically come in for a pair of pants, but if Mrs Litwin was working, there would be a good chance that you would leave with pants, shirt, sweater, shoes, etc. It was a running joke in our town. "Oh oh...Mrs Litwin, looks like I'm getting a whole outfit". I wish we still clothing stores with people like that.

Here in CNY retail stores are going more and more out of business. And you know, Wal-Mart and Target people generally don't know how to make a person look good. Not saying one can't find nice pieces there though. My ideal place to go with great prices is Boscovs! I just got a nice ensemble without breaking the bank. In fact, im wearing it today to church. My pastor always says i look sharp and that i should give the sermons. Lol.

I remember those days. Recently stopped in at the MensWearhouse in an emergency (lost my tux the day before a wedding) and had some guy giving me pointers on style and fit. His pants were pleated, way too much break, made of poly, and matched only the stain on the collar of his shirt. TG for videos like this.

Hi John, first I would like to thank you for the time you spend helping me look presentable. I'm 74 and married 2 1/2 years. Both of us are widowed and I'm sorry to say your videos came after we were married so I can't thank you for my marriage. I was always worried that the colors I picked out didn't match so I tended to wear black, dark blue, grey etc. Watching your videos helped me dress the age I look, 60's, not the age I feel ,30's. All in all, thank you for the hard work you put into each and every video. Know that you help many.

@ Wayne Baer. I understand how you feel because I turn 84 in 3 weeks, but with Melbourne Australia in virtual continuous lockdown since last Christmas, John's past guidance resulted in a wardrobe full of sound basics. With Spring under way I am looking to apply John's current advice to some Retail Therapy, because I survived 12 weeks in the COVID 19 Intensive Care Ward, and now I would like to get back into the Department Stores, so that I can dress in style for the Christmas season parties. I am sure that your wife would apprecate you doing the same, because by the time Christmas Day arrives the Medical Experts predict that we will be able to return to our usual Lifestyles So dress to really enjoy Christmas. When I decided to smarten up my appearance, I had lost a bit of weight so I pretty much had to buy some clothes that fit properly. The very first Items I got were a brown pair of Brogue shoes, Dark blue Jeans, Oxford Shirt (White & Office Blue) and a Navy Blue Blazer and a nice watch (I decided at the time for a Omega Seamaster 300m - Cost a bit, but it may be a timepiece that I could wear for the rest of my life & I get a little Bond moment every time I check the time, which always puts a smile on my face: Instant morale boost). These core items I still wear frequently 8 years on, because they were high quality (Sorry to brand drop, but I am over the moon on how well they are put together), like Loake shoes, Allsaints Jeans, Hawes & Curtis (Shirts & Blazer) they are still new looking 8 years on and after frequent wear, but I do look after them, especially the shoes to ensure longevity.

I'm a 65 yr old who recently lost over 100 lbs. I'm in the process of updating my wardrobe and your videos have been very helpful. One issue I still have a problem with is wearing brogues for casual occasions. I've always associated the extra holes and stitching as appropriate for more formal/business wear. Your channel has been a Godsend. I'm 63, 6'4" and lost about 50-lbs. in the past year. When combined with weight training, I look awesome (barrel chested w/ a classic "V"). However, now in need of retooling my wardrobe to reflect how I feel about myself and to match my physical makeover. Old "wardrobe" basically consisted of jeans, NB sneakers and t-shirts. Work wear was stodgy and unimaginative. A challenge is that I'm color blind and the thought of putting together different looks made me glaze over with indecision. Additionally, finding sizes that fit on a limited budget is a challenge. Started an eBay side gig and now able to move forward. Received my first pair of Beckett Simonon Kent Wingtips two days ago (prefer Derby's with jeans, Oxfords with more formal wear.) and trotted them out at work yesterday with a navy blue blazer and burgundy button up and the compliments were non-stop. Almost to a person, the ladies keyed in on the shoes. LOL btw- divorced 4-years after 20 and want to impress as I start dating. Your advice has been instrumental as a guide. Much thanks.

I like blue dress shirts (often with patterns) with dress jeans as a white shirt is both more formal as well as being too plain for a simple pants/short combo. On the other hand, a white dress is great when wearing a tie and jacket as it lets the tie stand out and is easier to highlight the jacket (be that a suit, blazer, sports coat).

While I can say I have everything in this basic kit and more building it over time, I’m still adding more versatility with variations in brown to burgundy shoes for general style wear options. That’s with having a split of colors of thirteen pairs of Black/Brown leather shoes in various styles. It really does take a while, but if one does zero in and focus on the recommendations you say in the video, a person will build a starter style kit faster. However, for me personally the variations of buttoned up Dress Blue shirts remain my most versatile to wear all the time or in patterned light Blue shades. In the early days many years ago, I never quite understood Blazers, Sports Jacket vs Suit Jackets and lost much opportunity to pick up over the years, but ok. I now know the differences thanks to style channels like yours. Your weaving your own #Legend for helping many men develop that sense of style that no one else ever thought them over their entire lifetime. Keep looking your best and adding Style IQ to any place you style step into, because people notice you when you do far more than everyone else who don’t.

@@RA2Music I am 84 and trying to get over COVID, followed by COVID 19 induced blood clots, that are now killing 1 in 8 people worldwide who had already survived for more than 6 months in COVID Intensive Care. All my life I have had wonderful opportunities presented to me because when I was 12 and started wearing a suit to College, my Step-father, a Naval Officer taught me how to iron my shirt without any wrinkles and how to iron my suit with a steaming cloth, which I did every night. He had already taught me how to polish my shoes "Navy" style which included polish the arch of the shoe where it blended into the sole. That became second nature, and I still do that every day even though I am living in a Hospital environment. And just like you have experienced a lot of people comment on the way I dress. Not because my clothes are spectacular, or even expensive, but they are as well maintained as the Naval Uniforms that you will see people wearing if you use Google to dig up some old episodes of JAG. After a while dressing in that manner becomes second nature, which is why it is so noticeable. Phil.

@@RA2Music I'd like to recommend anything but an apple watch. Digital watches are for 10 year old boys. I picked up a gloss silvertone Emporio Armani chronograph with a blue face for like $150. Hi John.... sports jacket: what i discovered for me is a mokka-tone melange , works well with a white shirt.. jeans or lightgrey five pockets....and a little tan on the face. I like shirts with a little substance, not too thin... that are ironed but a bit wrinkled, no tie... for casual look

I was told to never wear brown shoes for a formal event or with a suit. In the UK is a sign of working class not middle class. Casual yes but never with a suit or formal wear.

Lawyer Here: Always had a business wardrobe for work. One stylish GF complained about my casual attire. She bought some clothes to change my "look." Have to work on that. SHOES: I really like the brown oxfords. They stand out. Women have a weird fixation about men's shoes. They always notice. Can't go wrong with those. My Aunt owned several charm/ modeling schools. She was big on a man's attire. For her it was a first impressions thing and how differently people treat you. At 67' I need to work on it [LOL.]

I have similar brogues shoes in tan. I have lost count of how many people passed positive comments on them. They cost a little more but will last a life time and can be re-soled. Must be polished on regular basis….that a no brainier.

Very nice video and certainly well needed. One question though, why not black dress shoes instead of the brown ones. The brown ones certainly are nice, add color and imply dressed casually when not, but I don’t think you can wear brown shoes with blue or gray slacks, whereas black shoes you can wear with slacks or jeans. And what about socks? Help there would be appreciated 😀

Black is fine, but always reads very formal. Brown still says ‘dressy’ but in a more subtle manner. Thanks for commenting!

Almost have the list, need to get a new sports jacket though, Only other comment is the blue dress shirt for the office. Pre-covid it was almost like the uniform. Everyone's got one. White was the other way where if you were wearing it, you were the one going against the grain. I started to mix in a light yellow and *gasp* light pink to mix it up. Honestly still prefer the blue, but for office wear it gets used a lot around here. Still a great list of must haves!

Whats up my brother, i just went shopping to NY and found some insane convinacion on casual clothes in express , I asked why the selection was different from the Houston store and told me that the new stuff does test sale runs first with them , and depending on that it goes nation wide, so I was happy to get those cool shirts and pants !!, I need to get me a few more shoes like those oxfords and black shoes as well, Iwill check the ones you showed here. Also you should check the new collection of sunglasses from LV, those are insanely good stylish , hard to pass on them for sure.
