When your starting martial arts the barrage of Japanese words can be overwhelming but fortunately with a few key words, and basic understanding you can unlock so many phrases and names of techniques you often hear in the dojo.
In this first video on Japanese we discuss some pronouciation, waza (techniques), directions and heights.

This is a really excellent video. As someone who has been fumbling, bumbling and stumbling around with the karate language for over 50 years, I must have frustrated the living hell out of so many Japanese karate people. In my defence, back then videos like this were not available (no internet for one thing), many of the Japanese instructors simply did not speak English well and the little Japanese that I learned from text books, were wide of the mark when it came to the specifics of Japanese found in karate. Many of the points that you touched on in this video, I either needed to figure out for myself (sometimes even drawing the drawing the wrong conclusion) or just remained complete mysteries. As for the Japanese people, while they were kind & genuinely wanted to help, that language barrier must have been as tormenting for them as it was for me. Plus they have a habit of seeming to agree with 'yes', when in fact all they are being is polite in their way. Initially this 'Yes' meant that I filed away their answer as an affirmative and tried to join the dots, so often getting nowhere. Therefore this video (subsequent ones too I hope), will certainly help me correct the errors of my unfortunate past 😞, and I hope prevent others from trudging down the same road of language frustration that I have taken. So well done Sir. Thank you.

This is actually quite good an explanation! Love it! Just... I am severely allergic to not writing prolongations in rômaji. So... either jōdan, jôdan or joudan. Jodan could mean all kinds of things, but not "upper region". Also, I never heard anyone referring to western letters as rōmaNji, but always as rōmaji, without an N. But the rest is very interesting! If you really make a series of this in a playlist, I might share that playlist! I bet you can teach me some things too! :)

There will be more in the series in the future and I definitely think the prolongations will need to be discussed at some point. Glad you liked it though.

How to pronounce SHUTO. I’ve learned it is SHTOR - with a silent U
@DanielPyatt
@DanielPyatt 5 жыл бұрын
Mads Petersen Hi Mads, good question as lots of people mispronounce this word as they often elongate the u sound such as shuu toe however this small pronunciation different makes a big different the shu sound is very short so the u sound isn’t completely silent but is short then there is definately no r sound after the to it is like saying toe in English but again short clipped sound
