I could see how there could be a slight level of being overwhelmed. I, myself, would feel a similar way too. Mainly because I wouldn't want to accidentally offend them. I'm American and we can be offensive without even trying. Lol

The founder of Shotokan Karate, Gichin Funakushi, was taught the way of Shorin-ryu Karate. Therefore, it can be said that Shorin-ryu is the origin of Shotokan, and both schools share lots of similarities.

Both Shotokan and Shorin Ryu are from Shuri-Te. Also, Korean Tang Soo Do has its roots in Shorin Ryu/Shuri-Te (though its direct ancestor is Shotokan). Tang Soo Do is the Korean transliteration of Okinawan Karate's former name, To-te which means "China Hand."

This is traditional Karate. This Kihon is for practice. I believe that in real live they will fight different.
@toraguchitoraguchi9154
@toraguchitoraguchi9154 5 жыл бұрын
I think they are wasting their time. In the Kihon Kumite they should attack and counter with full speed and at a closer distance. Decades ago when I first did Kihon with a Okinawan Dojo (After achieving nidan in Shotokan), I could not respond fast enough in "Sandan Gi Kumite" Three steps forward 3 punch attacks jodan chudan gedan tsuki, and the distance was so close, I got hit every time initially. Soon managed to block and counter in Kihon Kamae at full speed as if fighting/Sparring. Unfortunately not many dojos around the world do it this way. While White Belts do it step by step, but shodans should do it faster, sandan even faster and godan black belts even faster still. Too bad most dojos stick to white belt level with this training, making it useless in relation to real kumite.

@@toraguchitoraguchi9154 thanks for sharing your experience. I see your point but we need to ask them directly why they are doing that way?? What they want to achieve?? Is there are any kotekitae involve in this training??
@toraguchitoraguchi9154
@toraguchitoraguchi9154 5 жыл бұрын
@@senseisoto5013 Actually, there wasn't. The training with Kotekitei is usually parry-strike the hand then punch...often we see schools, stuck with a partial syllabus. Kihon Kata (Fukyu kata) done by a senior dan sensei should involve advance body mechanics and CG control but because 30 years ago they learnt fukyu a certain way, passed their 9th kyu training and moved on....they never worked to change their fukyu kata....they can do their Suparimpei or Kusanku like a 5th Dan, but their Fukyu remained static at junior grade level...granted with better kamae and more stability but essentially still a junior level. Same goes with kihon kumite or a variety of things they learnt...it is a very common thing.

Why is the distance so off? If you step back that far there's no need to block because his fist can't reach you anyway. To make it worse, your fist can't reach him either! And can karateka please stop using oi zuki as your usual practice punch for defense? No one actually attacks this way; even other karateka almost never use this technique is kumite.

My first training partner in jiu-jitsu came from this branch of shorin-ryu. He dedicated almost three decades of his life to it earning fourth degrees in both it and kobudo and making trips to Okinawa with his teacher to train with Ahagon at this very dojo. Then one day after he had earned his blue belt completely abandoned it. Told me he had told his instructor he would no longer accept promotions an dedicated his training to jiu-jitsu only.

@FuzZ, Yes, & I have to wonder it they're *all* really black belts; for instance at ~0.54 he's punching a whole 12 inches away from his attacker's body after blocking, whereas the attacker when doing the same sequence, comes *much* closer, often flicking the other's gi, which I think is more correct. Interesting to watch nonetheless, I think.

@@dannichols6261 also, if you look on the foreign guy's kumite and kata, you can see that his foot moves everytime he complete a move... meaning to say that his foot is not rooted on the ground, unequaled distance, and the center of gravity is unstable... not enough practice and basics... but have "black belt" *just sharing* ... there is that one guy, an air force who joined to our dojo.. in the first day of our training, we saw him wearing a gi and a brown belt, so that means he's already karateka before he joins... so my sensei was like... "wow, so you're a brown belt in your former dojo... so why don't you show me some kihons and katas"... and after that... my sensei said.. "okay... stay here after the training, i'll give you a white belt, and from now on you'll return being a white belt... etc and stuff"....

Im not a karate expert but i did 6 months o boxing, and did mma training for a year with bjj twice a week. We normally spar.. i dont know but i think these guys are wasting their time, wothout any resistance or sparring, in boxing you learn fast how to punch properly, parry, bob and weeve and foot work.. in jiu jitsu you learn easily with basic chokes andd armbars with sparring at the end of the sessiom.. mma will teach you how to spar with take downs.. these traditional karate might take years to master.. i guess a whitebell in bjj with 6 months of boxing can beat this tma karate guys.

Karate in Okinawa is a life long experience. My version of Shorin Ryu, didn’t allow you to spar until you reach Dan rank. So a Sho Dan was considered a beginner’s rank. Kumite was more hard hitting than now. So yes, a boxer could very well beat a TMA of lower rank. The intent of karate seems more social. The average karate probably could hold his own. There were old masters that were brawlers. Their styles reflected that.
