Basic Leather Working Tools To Get Started!

Great video Sean ! This was the exact video I was looking for when I first took an interest in the craft but couldn't find. I'm sure someone is going to come across this and find some very useful info. On my edges I've been using the same dye as I use for the rest of the piece although It takes extra coats as the edges really suck it up not unlike end grain on wood. For burnishing I've been using beeswax and that system gets me by until I can getter other products.

Thanks Randall! I tried to keep this video as short as possible while covering everything important. I totally agree with you on the stain and beeswax for the edge treatment! If you have the opportunity, give the gum tragacanth a try. You may like it.

thank you for a very good tutorial! very informative & honest. That is a great vise u made as well. sure you could market those. I am looking to get into this craft. I did try way back in HS and always loved. hoping to turn into something profitable. Good to know where to start on tools. I get overwhelmed with info overload and usually go overboard. anyway, very good job! looking forward to more. One Q... Was that rubber cement? Same as contact cement? I haven't looked yet but, looking for start up projects/designs. I don't know if u have done stamping? Thank you.🙂

Thanks! The glue I use is a water based adhesive, not a rubber or contact cement. It's probably not as strong as rubber/contact cement but it doesn't have the bad odor. Good luck with the craft, it's awesome and super fun!

Exactly! You do not need to buy the "kits"! Don't spend more than you have to do the project you want to do!

Very informative video.. I have found a website called Weaver leathercraft supply and the have better quality leather supplies than Tandy and better prices. Aldo the have a line of instructional videos for the beginner leather crafter.

Doesn't that wood backing dull your diamond chisels?

He uses a cutting mat that is self healing and wont full the chisels.

Also, if I'm not mistaken. Woods hardness is less than metal, so I dont think it would dull them. At least not very quickly. I'm sure harder wood would eventually do some wear.

You really only need to cut, make holes and stitch. The rest of the tools you'll gather with time.

You do not need to build a new stitching Pony. Cut through one of the vertical pieces and put a small hinge on the outside. Problem solved.

Be sure to make your cut below the tensioning bolt.

You can stitch way faster than that! Come on! My very beginning students can stitch faster than that! 10 inches in an hour to an hour and a half! WHAT! Never use resolene! Makes your piece like plastic! Use tan-kote! Best there is for a piece that is not constantly exposed to wet conditions! Put wax on your chisel every time you punch and your stitching punch will pull right out. I always recommend anything Al Stohlman! That man was the Godfather of leatherwork! I have every book, note, video and every scrap of information I could find from him! Been doing this 40 years!

You mention that "Your very beginning students" in your opening sentence. Of course they will stitch faster because they have someone sitting there showing them how to do it. When you are learning the craft by reading a book, the first time you stitch, it WILL take a long time. You have to get used to holding the needles with both hands, learn which hand goes first, and not to mention when you screw up you have to backtrack. This all takes time. Not everyone has the opportunity to go to a classroom setting for leather working. I know I sure didn't.

Not trying to be a negative nancy on you by no means. Your video has very good information! Your edges on your wallet has very nice edges! Always take your time to really do those edges. Pros will look at your edges. They will make or break your project! Nice work
