My workshop is also in my bedroom and my work bench is an old school desk I found at a thrift store. I got a lot of my tools at Harbor Freight. I have the rotary hole punch and scratch awl, but since I work at an upholstery supply store I was able to replace them both with C.S. Osborne tools at a very good price. I also have the steel ruler and I want the hole punches and the hammer. I the speedy sticker didn’t last me long, the needle broke. For cutting I use a Harbor Freight utility knife for larger cuts and the .50 cent knives for smaller cuts and for skiving. I even got a diver/compass for scratching stitching lines, but I didn’t think of using it to mark holes. I’d also like to add to your list getting a framing square.

If you need the Sewing Awl, get a brand name unit. I use a speedy stitch and it rocks. Bought the HF and it is junk. The thread is too flimsy and the needles break too easy. Hobby Lobby carries another brand that looks decent. The needles all seem to be sized different.

There are a couple $80-90 sets on Amazon I’m debating. They are supposed to have everything. Would you recommend I get the tools individually? I am a complete beginner. Except 4th grade field trip experience, lol. All I know is, a regular sewing needles doesn’t work for leather.
@rosestewart16062 жыл бұрын
no. buy what he recommended plus an edge beveler and some leather needlles. I would also add emory cloth. you might also need a creaser if you work in that style. Add tools as you need them. You may or may not need leather carving tools, stamps etc. it's more important to find the right knife for yourself and figure out what types of work you enjoy.
@amyx2312 жыл бұрын
@@rosestewart1606 I actually got the “deluxe” set on Amazon. It has everything I’d ever want plus more. It’s a good entry point I’d say, I’m learning what I like and what I don’t. Also, I’m learning finished (cheap scrap) leather doesn’t take tooling. It’s a learning process. I’m a dabbler, so beginner quality tools will suffice. Like paints, if I ever need the better stuff, I’ll know exactly what I get then.

The tread with the quick stitch sewing awl is terrible. It doesn't hold a knot and the stitching will unravel. The awls okay just use different thread.
