Basic maintenance on a 3.0L Dodge Caravan: Oil and filter, Air Filter and PCV valve

Thank you for posting this very informative video. I have a 1990 Dodge Dynasty with this same 3.0 engine. I was unsure where the PVC valve was located and what type and size of socket I need to remove it. This video is gold.

My 3.0 has a bizarre PCV system! The front valve cover vents properly into a PCV. The rear cover vents into a rubber hose that enters the air cleaner box, puts the fumes thru a little sponge, then it goes thru the air filter and back into the throttle. Few know to wash or replace the sponge, so pressure builds up under that cover, sometimes causing seal leaks.

@Fly Robin Also i just put in a new transmission on mines and i can't figure out how to put back on and adjust the rod going from throttle body to the top of the tranny and i just re watched this video to see if i can see how it was on here but he doesn't even have nothing connected to his got me wondering does your have this rod?

@@FRANCISCOLOPEZ-iw7qd yes sir 3.0L. I'm experiencing a p0306. Misfire on cylinder 6. I've changed plug and wire but still throwing the code. I was wondering if that breather hose could be the culprit.

That breather hose is mainly for emissions you can put a catch can for the oil like older cars but you won't pass emissions with that i made mine with 2 different size hoses and a connector that had different sizes on both sides works prefect got everything from auto zone. It might be your injector or cap and rotor. I had a miss fire in cylinder 1 and new cap and rotor and wires fixed it.

There is no old fashioned breather hose. The engine breathes into the PCV valve on the front valve cover. However, the 3.0 has the rear valve cover venting into a hose the puts the fumes into the air cleaner box thru a little sponge. Bizarre.

Hi original ... i have been watching your vids... thanks! .. i have van just like yours .. i have a high idle that i cannot figure out for the life of me , i replaced the pcv, throttle position sensor , idle air intake, i tried to check for vacuum leaks as best i could... i am not like trump, cause i'm stumped! .. ha!... do you have any recommends? thanks!

Do you have an engine trouble code set? Is the "check engine" light on? If so you will have to find out what it is and proceed from there.

sorry i had to wait after i reset battery.. Yes code is p1294 .Target Idle Speed Not Reached. i already replaced the TPS and the Idle Air intake solenoid , and it's still high revving .. i tried to check for vacuum leaks as best i could... i also changed the aluminun PCV valve.. i think all this problem started after i started trying to clean the TB with cleaner.. i have taken it off and fully cleaned it.. so i'm not like trump.. i'm stumped :( .. any advise is appreciated. thx.

other error code P0140 O2 sensor ... i have not change that.. this just started very recently.. i think this is seperate, cause i hear a exhaust leak sound like near rear exhuast manifold+ very slight loss of power.. the van is old i replace all the seals i could .. crank seal, cam seal, axle seal , valve cover .. seams like when i seal up one part... another part hemorrhages.. but i'll keep going cause soon i will have changed everything, i'm very intent on keep this guy. cause i like it. also cause of people like you with how to videos.. This type of problem can be tough to crack. I would have tried about what you did. Way back when I had an early Plymouth Voyager with a high idle and it turned out to be the MAP sensor. That was from the late eighties and it was a 4 cylinder though. But just keep at it. Plain stubbornness often fixes problems like this.

5w-30 oil is too thin for that engine, the maker recomended 10w-40 or 15w-40

Nah man, manual says either 5w30 or 10w30. At least for the 3.0 V6

@@leonkloonsner This is very strange because, as you pointed, service manual says 5w-30 or 10w-30 but below the hood there is a stciker that says that the engine uses 15w-40 or 20w-50 oil.

I wouldn't even take out drain bolt my ocd would just change out the whole pan or at least take it out sand and paint that thing looks rusted af

Problem is on this engine that would involve removing engine mounts and lifting the engine. They are in the way of the pan bolts. This rusty pan finally leaked and was a good part of the reason the van now resides in the junkyard lol
