Wife bought a 94' Delica SWB sometime ago. Came free with a cracked head "in multiple places", stuffed diesel injection pump, turbo, timing chain and a whole bunch more. Replaced the lot, including the plastic tanked radiator with a 4 row alloy one which had to be shoehorned in, an allow overflow bottle and low temp high flow thermostat. Wound up turbo boost just a little and her van performs very well. Economy-wise it's clearing 9K's per litre which isn't bad for one of these. They're a great go anywhere kinda bus and if in good shape, can be a lot of fun.

Just needs the planks in the base replacing. Ask your local timber yard and they might cut them to the right length, ready to collect and drop into place. A light in there would be handy too - how about a portable one you could recharge via the cigarette lighter socket in whatever you’re driving to the unit in? Free light for when you go in the pit, in effect, and much safer than having a mains light down there - especially if it floods from time to time. I’d also be using old engine oil to coat the underside of my vehicles if I had a pit like that. I know some will disagree with that, but given the slight crustiness of the HubNut fleet, probably worth considering. Just remember to tell MOT testers that you haven’t got the mother of all oil leaks.

I have had one of these for about a year and I am currently rebuilding the engine. Just a couple of things, get an oil catch can fitted as SOON AS POSSIBLE, these have a habit in every L400 of throwing oil droplets back into the air intake as the air comes back out of the crankcase tube, you will find some traces of oil in the intercooler pipes and it does find it's way into the intake manifold, my intake manifold inside was a mess due to this. Also you will probably never see the intercooler fan going, they are only made to come on in these at extreme temperatures so you will unlikely see it ever on in the UK.

Just a few notes about the fuel filter - the probe & wiring looks like a WIF (water in fuel) sensor, as correctly identified by Hubnut. I imagine that there'll be a dashboard light or ECU fault triggered if it senses water in the filter bowl. Shouldn't give any issues as UK fuel generally is pretty good, but something to watch if you use biodiesel as this absorbs more water than normal fuel (and as pump fuel gradually contains more bio- now up to 7%, and likely to increase further).

That's the problem with automatics is you don't notice mild brake binding as much because they "creep" anyway in drive and reverse. In a manual you notice quite easily if you stop on a mild hill and it doesn't roll when you take your foot off the brake.

Well a bike pump is safe and recalling the best part of my Lada was the hand stirrup tyre pump, good for a stomach muscle workout, instead of the obligatory footpump leg injury sustained when a bolt comes loose by 25psi and sundry bracketry becomes a projectile and whacks you in the leg. Nowadays we can stand instead and watch the meltdown in the lighter socket with our electric pumps. I had a Halfords one however that managed all four tyres on my G Wagen before the motor started smoking .
