There was a time when I thought similarly--that the wrist had an active role in snapping the ball. It was Rick Pauly who shared an eye-opening exercise involving a wrist brace that helped me understand whip better. Try this for yourself: Have pitchers throw three sets of 10 pitches. The first ten are thrown keeping everything relaxed and loose from the elbow down. The next 10 are thrown with a bowler’s wrist brace and the last 10 thrown trying to get good wrist snap. Record and compare the results. I think you''ll find that the ten thrown loosely will be the fastest, the 10 thrown with the wrist brace will be next fastest and the set thrown with wrist snap will be the slowest! Arm whip is a little like a bullwhip in that there are now powered mechanisms within the length of a bullwhip. A wave of energy is sent down the length of the whip causing the tip two accelerate past the speed of sound. Same idea with arm whip. Allow whip to occur by keeping the lower arm loose and allowing it to accelerate as the upper arm pauses at the chest. The role of the wrist is actually passive, much like the whip. What has been perceived as a powered action, is actually the result of energy transfer through a loose/relaxed link. Please don’t take my word for it. Watch slow motion videos of pitchers like Abbott, Osterman and Ueno and try out this stuff for yourself. Contact Pauly, Balswick or Hillhouse and ask them about wrist snap and about some yahoo named Ken who’s blabbing about stuff on KZbin videos 😉. For more information, check out the links here: www.discussfastpitch.com/softball-pitching/26065-top-10-pitching-expert-drill-demonstrations.html When I look back at my days of teaching wrist snap, arm circle speed drills, slamming the hips and a forced follow through, I feel a sense of regret for hindering the understanding and progress of those pitchers. Some transcended the misinformation and ended up doing well despite my misguidance. When the light bulb finally came on, the kids benefited from a much faster progression with much better speed, control and spin. Even now I realize that some of what I teach in full confidence I’ll look back at in a few years and have regret. The more I learn, the more I realize there is to learn. They key is to study, test, listen and be open to trying new things. Looking at slow motion video of the world’s greatest pitchers, I don’t see the wrist cocked back and snapped at release. In every case, I see a loose lower arm pulling the ball around the circle and whipping the ball from the hip. Interestingly, in much of the last ¼ of the circle, I see the palm facing up until about 7 o’clock. In conversations with 3 of our nation’s top pitching coaches, they seem to be in agreement that arm wrist snap drills have no benefit for their students. To confirm this, Google Bill Hillhouse, Rich Balswick and Rick Pauly and either watch their videos, or ask them personally using the contact information on their websites. In the meantime, watch these videos of Osterman, Ueno, Abbott (top three of all time) and Amanda Scarborough. Amanda’s video has become the golden reference demonstrating whip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXyVoKOvmLOGhas kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZ6we56eor15eMU kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ7MeGegnpiipLM kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWa7aWmkecSKiZY Best wishes, Ken

Fastpitch is exactly what it says. The ball is pitched faster and harder than softpitch (up to 60-70 mph). The ball is often "windmilled" which helps give alot of the power behind the ball which is thown underhand. Most of the fast pitch softball teams you will find are all girl or women teams. My daughter is 9 and is learning to pitch fastpitch. Even at her age, the balls are fairly quick. (believe me, I've gotten beaned in the legs a few times during her pitching practices)

Simply anatomically speaking, which is a more awkward movement? Softball pitch, or a baseball pitch (not side-arm)?

I wanted really bad to be pitcher on the softball team this year, and its getting me mad how everyones saying "you have to have years of experience" shut up because you can do anything if you try . im afraid they might make me center again because i can throw it to home in a few seconds if neccesary . they say my arm is unaveragely strong for a 7th grader . any tips?

Thanx for the tips and by the way if ur a softball player ur definitly not pitching 150 mph the fastest women pitch around 70 and the major league men are around 100

I can't pitch fast underhand to save my life. My daughter pitched little leauge (overhand) for several years and now plays softball, she can't pitch underhand either. Its definitely an art you must spend time to develope.

@awickedshimmy I'm sure there are a number of people that throw a softball at 150 kph... that's only 87 mph. The best male pitchers in the world throw at 209 kph which equals 130 miles per hour. Just saying... for clarification.

@turningtodd do a Google search for "How to download KZbin videos to your computer." I found one on ezinearticles that looks like it would do the trick, but I don't think KZbin will let me post the link. Good luck.

Different sports. Different feelings about them. Same and Different. It doesn't matter which sport is better. It doesn't matter which sport is more difficult to play. What really matters is that kids and adults all around the world can enjoy either sport and meet friends, exercise, get outside, be active, and have fun in doing so. Isn't that the point of sports?

@marcadaciti well, you really need to learn the basics, baseball pitchers have an advantage, they throw over hand. Unfortunately there are people in the world that do not realize this. Considering that girls from the outfield throw over hand to make it go faster and further. Thank you JillianSask for saying "Please go educate yourself before making such a stupid comment."

WTF!!!! baseball is not harder, the only difference is the stand a couple inches back form us and there ball small. Really softball is sort of hard because we have to use our whole body for pitch and the guys only use there arms. And the ball is bigger and harder to throw so nobody should be saying any thing. I should know i played softball ball for five years

The minimum salary in MLB is $400,000. If softball pitchers are better, then surely they'd run to MLB where they would make their millions in endorsements and over $10M per year salary. I don't have to read a book, I've attended and been involved in 1000's of games in both baseball and softball. Again, and you are being owned, the great unhittable softball pitchers should work with a smaller ball and go to make even more than they could possibly make in softball.
@fjccommish13 жыл бұрын
@XxMyFriendsRFreaksxX "But why would they switch to a different game? " To make millions. The claim people make is that softball is faster. It's not. If it were the softball players would go make millions in the slower game, adjust down where their super speed reactions would make them superstars.
@awickedshimmy15 жыл бұрын
ply48nsw - you are incorrect. Nobody throws a soft ball at 150 kph. The best male pitchers in the world throw 130. And they don't throw from 10 metres. Try 14 metres. Still - you are right. Softball is a much more exciting game than baseball. A baseball hitter would initially have lots of trouble hitting off a great softball pitcher.
@fjccommish15 жыл бұрын
Then why aren't any softball pitchers pitching in MLB, making millions?

Wrist snap is not the way. Watch slo-mo videos of college pitchers and watch their arm whip. Learn to do that. Find an instructor that teaches that. Wrist snap is crap.
@bbarker57669 жыл бұрын
Every pitching coach I've seen or know teaches the snap to beginners. It is important as it helps build wrist strength which will allow them to be strong enough to do other pitches as they advance in skill. I am not a "pitching" coach this is something I picked up from the one's I've been around. However it is like the machinist that I learned from says.... "I'm showing you my way and there are different ways to do every job find what works for you."
@fjccommish15 жыл бұрын
That's my point. Softball, while fine, isn't as great a sport as baseball. Do you get it? Baseball is the harder sport, at the top levels with better athletes.
@fjccommish15 жыл бұрын
To be a good softball player you have to be no good at baseball, then turn to the bigger ball, and overall slower game.
@fjccommish13 жыл бұрын
@XxMyFriendsRFreaksxX One more time - if the athletes in softball could react faster in this faster game, then they'd be running to pro baseball to make millions.

I am educated. Take any of these softball players and put them in baseball. They'd fail. Baseball is the higher profile, more difficult sport. You may not welcome me, but I am stronger, smarter and faster than you, so push past you. In fact, I'm "er" than you in every positive way.
@fjccommish15 жыл бұрын
Nope. The better athletes play baseball, and it is harder to hit a baseball than a softball. Female athletes are no different than male athletes, they may be on average not as strong, but can achieve the same endurance, coordination, and I bet a woman who played baseball instead of softball could be a good offensive and defensive player, even if she didn't hit for as much power as the average male player.
