it really says something about Joey Mantia's athletic ability that he was able to stay on a treadmill at 20mph without using any speed skating technique, just pure brute strength. Most of the recreational skaters I know, even the pretty in shape ones, struggle to maintain even 15mph.

Thanks for the video. It says so much in so little time, but seeing Joey doing it makes all the difference!

I think its important to remind beginners that takes at least 5 years of technical training to look as good as Joey Mantia " one of the best inline speed skater in the world. His beginner's effort got him qualified for the Olympics. So don't get discouraged if you cannot achieve what you see in the video very quickly

It's so weird to hear Joey call himself a beginner when you've been watching him win countless inline speed skating competitions.

I do agree it is very strange to see or classify Joey as someone learning to speed skate, but you have to remember this is a demonstration and to see Joey skating demonstrating his techniques was awesome. Double pushing and gliding side to side. I would love to get my hands-on one of the treadmill. ..hehe.

His upper body bobs up a bit during the push phase in the final clip. Is that inefficient or inevitable? Are his toe-wheels too high off of the belt during recovery? Is that wasted energy or just fine? Like most expert in-line skaters, this guy is not going to be a beginning ice speed skater for very long! :) Cool video!

Not really translatable. In cross country skate skiing you want to be much more upright and have the hips forward. The onw thing in common would probably be the weight shift over the feet.

@USSpeedskating

Yes, the basic principles of skating are the same no matter what level of skater you are. The most important will be the direction of your push. The more perpendicular to you travel direction the faster you will go and the more efficient your push will be. Making your knee angle smaller and the angle between your foot and shin will get you in a more areodynamic position. It will also lengthen your push so you don't have to go such a high frequency. Bending your upper body is more speed skating specific to reduce air friction even more. i.e. a hockey player would have a more upright upper body position and so can a recreational skater.

Joey is a champion in line skater but since he turned to ice skating he has not been so successful. Here he is demonstrating traditional technique but no double push. DP has never been accepted by the ice speed skating world.
