Another great video. It can be overwhelming to see all of the equipment when you're new to any hobby. I have sewn for a long time and when I tried a quilt for the first time to see if I even liked doing it, I bought a 6x24 ruler like you showed and drew lines on the back with a washable pen I had from sewing, then cut with my good cloth shears. I did eventually buy the mat, rotary cutter and more rulers once I knew I would continue, but I was able to start with a very minimal spend.

Is quilting thread necessary?

No. Not necessary. Quilting thread is thicker so it shows up more. If you’re hand quilting you can also get special waxed thread so it doesn’t tangle as much. However, thicker thread may mean tension adjustments. I always suggest beginners quilt with the same thread they are used to.
