I'm a fifty five year old man who has never sewn before. I'm building a nook to have my breakfast in the morning. I'm wanting box cushions to cover the seats in the nook. I can also never get the curtains I like. I've got very wide windows. So I've decided to buy a sewing machine. I'm considering a Brother SE700. I've also been looking at large fabric cutting tables. Eventually, I want to be able to make duvet covers, etc. I'd love some advice if you can. Thanks in advance.

It looks like that’s an embroidery machine? I’m thinking that’s making it cost more than it needs to unless you are planning to use that feature. Truthfully, I haven’t gone shopping for a new machine in a long time. The Singer that I use to demonstrate top loading bobbins on is not my favorite machine. It’s lacking a needle stop up feature. So definitely make sure you have that and the ability to do zig zag. I mostly quilt nowadays. So my advice on the other two questions will be scanty, but I’m sure you can find other KZbinrs who specialize in those things?? For the box cushions, I find doing piping on the seams adds a professional touch. When you sew curtains, make sure you plan them so that the length of the fabric is vertical so the strongest grain is fighting gravity. The crossgrain might end up hanging unevenly with time. Some people hang the fabric for a bit before sewing to test potential stretching before cutting and sewing. Lining them also makes them look more professional. Sorry I don’t have more advice! I think you need a nice quilted table runner for your nook 🙂

Boy here. I wanted one of these magnetic seam guides and my mum told me this: It's like your archery, look at the target not your arrow tip. I did get one, but that was after I could sew straight on my own. Just because it was a cheap and cool toy, I bought it. 😁

Your mum is so wise! I have one too, but find it gradually shifts, so it only gets used for these kinds of videos 😂

I went nuts playing with the tension on my machine because I kept getting loops underneath and fabric would hang up around the needle. Discovered by accident that there was a tiny burr on the needle plate that was catching on everything. I filed it down with a little metal nail file and it works perfectly now! So if adjusting the tension doesn't help, take that needle plate off and hold it up to the light; it doesn't take a very big burr to ruin your sewing fun. Hope this helped someone 😘

I LOVE 💗 your speaking cadence/rhythm. Clear. A bit slower than normal conversation. PERFECT for instruction. I commented on a different video and had to comment here also! Great tip on the tape. My first sewing machine is ordered but not here. Learning all I can before it comes (and after since you are so great!) Thank you!😊

Thanks so much! And congrats on the machine! If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, you might want to check out my learn to sew online course. Starts from taking it out of the box and trains good habits 🙂. I also have some stuff on my website. Have fun!!!

I just bought my first sewing machine. I used my mom’s once years ago with her guidance to make curtains for my husband’s bunk in berthing on Navy Air Craft Carrier. Yep! That is the extent of my knowledge/experience. So your videos are PERFECT for me!! I never knew why they were called ‘fat quarters OR about cutting fabric off a bolt in general. (Though I have hand sewn A LOT in my life and purchased cut fabric several times). Your visual aid of the miniature bolt was genius!! Thank you so much!!!☺️

Really well explained, I was looking for this answer. Also tell us which type of fabric needs what level of tension (if it is related to fabric type). Thanks a lot.
@prettysimplesara14 күн бұрын
The rule of thumb is that heavier fabric types need higher tension (to help pull it through the layers) and lighter fabrics need lower tension to prevent puckering. That said, I haven’t really run into those types of issues. If you look at the stitches and adjust as needed to make it balance you will probably be fine 🙂

I bought a new Elnita EF 72 a year ago from a credible dealer. The top thread looping under the fabric during the first 4-5 stitches started to occur a month after I brought it home. I brought it back to the dealer twice and they suggested putting manual tension on the top and bottom thread as you have and told me to stop using the automatic thread cutter. The convenience of the thread cutter was one of the major reasons I bought the machine in the first place. I find it ridiculous that a person can spend $1700 on a sewing machine and have this 'known' problem. The dealer didn't seem to think that anything could be done about it and they didn't warn me about this issue during the purchase of course. I have decided to continue using the thread cutter and run scrap fabric under the needle before I sew my quilt item. It's just aggravating that I am left dealing with this.. I plan to stop by my local Bernina/Pfaff/Juki/Brother/Janome etc. sewing machine retailer and ask if they have a machine brand for sale that doesn't do this. I just want to know. How much do I have to spend to find a sewing machine that has solved this problem.. BTW thanks for doing what you do. Your honesty and articulation of this issue is refreshing.

It sounds like you've had a lot of trouble with your machine! I’ve never used one with a thread cutter, so I have no advice about that. I hope you find one that works for you 🙂

I've been sewing since I was eight so… for 62 years. I've used the tape system etc, but with a magnetic seam guide-which is easier to move around than tape (and other guides I've made that don't exist commercially), I am able to sew at top speed, especially for attaching bias edging and the like which is pretty much a mechanical action. I don't know anyone who has sewn for even a short while wiggle their seam all over the place like a drunk driver, so… maybe the advice should be, don't drink while sewing (or sew while drinking).

I have a serger, but I was gifted it after I stopped making clothes, so I haven’t used it much. But it still has feed dogs, so my guess is that these tips still work? Have you tried them with the serger yet?
