I can't even begin to explain how much of a difference this video and another one by City Planner Plays on roadway hierarchy has made for me. My biggest problems were first traffic and second was noise pollution. I understand now where and why to use 2, 4 and 6 lane roads and that a 2 lane road should never intersect a 6 lane, services should be next to arterials and collectors but accessed by local roads, and now that commercial should be buffered away from residential. I'm making tons of progress, my traffic flow is consistently above 90% and my citizens are not sick. Cheers.

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues Bronguero! My first cities never worked out that well either - there was usually one issue or another ... and they would eventually compound and be too much of a hassle to fix. The best thing I can recommend is take things slowly and build the city bit by bit - letting this stabilize and making sure it works before you move on. Bin signs sounds like it may be a traffic issue and the garbage trucks are having a difficult time reaching their destination or you don't have enough waste management for the size of your city. The death icons may be the same (traffic/number of facilities) but it may be a result of zoning too much too quickly. If you zone large sections of residential areas you'll have a decent amount of people on similar life cycles who all end up dying around the same time and overwhelming the services. I hope this helps!

Good video. There were a few ideas I hadn't thought of, like using offices as a buffer between residential and other zone types to reduce residential exposure to noise. Another thing I like to use as a noise/pollution buffer are parks. They serve the dual purposes of buffering noise, and providing recreational facilities to the residents and boosting land values for both residential and commercial zones nearby. I also like to use the streets with trees as soon as I unlock them, in my residential areas. The tree lines streets sacrifice the parking lane for noise reduction which helps in areas where you can't fully keep the noise pollution away from your residents. I avoid using them in commercial areas as the businesses can benefit from the extra parking, however. I think the 4 lane collector roads don't lose their parking lanes to the trees though, as the trees just occupy the centre island that's already there anyways, just replacing the pavement with trees, so there I'll always use the treed version unless it's serving an industrial area where the noise reduction doesn't matter. 6 lane roads do lose their parking lanes when adding trees, but if you're following the zoning and road hierarchy Jester recommends, you'll probably not have many zones along those roads that would need the parking anyways.

No matter how much we try to balance the needs for zoning,the thing will eventually get out of control real fast.And the 'wise financial planing' will not give us 1.000.000 per day in profit,but just 30.000 in profit,and rest goes to cities services.But their is just one detail that piss me of the most,and that detail are taxes.Taxes in cities skylines should go 10% for low class,20% for middle class,and 40% for the high class.And since we are familiar with the economic social order,then rich people should live in fancy houses,and theirs population should be 10%,middle class population should be 30% and live in the 5 floor apartment building,and the low class population should be 60% and live in the 15 floor apartment building.
@TheMrGazoline3 жыл бұрын
@@slavenarkaimovski3897 usually local taxes are flat anyway, while national taxes are progressive, if there is a such system in place. Otherwise national taxes are flat, as well.

Excellent tutorial. I'd only add that the noise associated with low density commercial is quite low and it's safe to put it side by side with residential, but high density commercial must be separated from residential or the residents start getting sick. You can also put parks and most other government services next to residential and they serve as good buffers also. The only exceptions are the obvious ones like ground polluting trash collection and noise polluting stadiums. Public transport other than buses are also surprisingly noisy sometimes.
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Hey dlwatib, thanks for helping out and posting some tips! I wasn't sure how much of a negative effect the low density commercial buildings would have - I usually err on the side of caution and separate everything a little bit. However, I would guess that if you had a lot of low density commercial in one area the amount of noise pollution they produce would increase.

I am glad I found this video, I might have to watch more. I have been playing on my TV, and I really can't see the small print of the info boxes, so I didn't know exactly what everything meant or how to use them. So I did, learn a couple of things. I usually watch Biffa, City Planner Plays, and Zumble. I just added you to the list, because you added what they did not. But here are my tips. If you use the better pollution policy, and have the Eden Project, you can place residential by industrial I believe. I know I get really close with no problems. I will put residential by the sporting arenas, even though they get a lot of noise. But that is only game day. So, its all good. I kind of do what you do in placing zoning area, but I hardly ever make one area one thing. I will mix low and high residential. I will mix residential with commercial, I will mix commercial and industry. I will mix offices with any of them. Meaning on one road on one block, it might go 1 low commercial, 1 high commercial, 1 high residential, 2 low residentials, 1 office, 1 low commercial. I put zoning on almost any open road, even if its a collector road. The only traffic I worry about is Industrial and Commercial. Offices and Residential I don't. But I do build zoning in spurts. Like you were saying, when you zone too much, and everyone moves in, your traffic is going to gridlock. So, I usually will zone and then wait until it looks like everyone has moved in before moving on. I am a driver, I have done a lot of driving jobs in my life and that is how I play. I set up roads similar to what I have seen in real life. Add zoning density like I have seen in real life. I might make a small suburb where it looks like only low residential, and then make a couple of the buildings commercial and maybe an office. Here is a major tip, that I don't see many people talk about, actually nobody really. A lot of the hang ups with the traffic getting gridlocked is cars travelling to almost the same place, on the same roads. And, the traffic doesn't use all lanes. It is good to make sure there is different options for the vehicles. If your commercial trucks are only wanting to go left, add commercial straight ahead and to the left To get the trucks to not only go one way. The concept comes from, it's not about all the cars that come through, but all the cars that can come through during a certain time. Ex. 10 vehicles can go 10 blocks in a certain amount of time. Those 10 vehicles have 3 options. Left, Right, or Straight Ahead. If there option is only right those 10 cars in that block will go right. If, Left and Right or both option we can assume 5 will go left and 5 will go right. You just cut the traffic in half, for that certain amount of time. Now If you go straight ahead, you just cut in thirds from the original 10. 3 will go left, 3 will go right, and 3 will go straight ahead, and the other one will be random. But I think you gave some of the best advice, when you said to take your time and build it slowly. I try not to force anything and let the game guide me. And, won't add anything unless the map is basically telling me too, if that makes sense. Meaning I try to build organically. And traffic is usually pretty good. The last city I did of 25 tiles almost 400,000 population traffic was around 74%, but nothing was gridlocked, and there was a lot of busy areas, and cars usually only had to sit through one light. But I am going to subscribe today, because I like how detailed you are. Now I feel like I might learn a little more about the game.
@jester.Gaming3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robert Herman, I appreciate you taking the time to leave a detailed comment! The way you design your city sounds really interesting and I bet you end up with some pretty unique looking layouts. The way I have my zoning is definitely not the best and I've learned a lot by making this city. I will probably zone my next city a little bit differently. There's a tough balance between trying to get something to look good vs function well given how the game logic works. I can see how having multiple options for your vehicles (especially delivery vehicles) with everything spread out would greatly benefit your traffic rather than have everything concentrated in the same area. I'll have to keep some of these things in mind going forward. Welcome to the channel Robert!

My new neighbourhood is built like this; 3 long sections with 2 arterials, blocks on the side sections go only length-wise, with pedestrian paths in between the backs of the buildinds, surrounded by an alley of trees, the path is also accesible 2 or 3 times from the side of the blocks as well. Might I mention I've made all the 2 lane roads one way except for the middle sections one, so could that pose a problem for schools? it's a tiny walkable distance to each one but honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if kids walked half-way, got bored, pulled a car out of their pocket and had to drive allllllll the way around the whole place just to get back home. As for services stationed in that neighbourhood, I see it as a good thing that they must go around the entire city, sort of as a patrol, no?

This is by far from an exact ratio ... it really depends on how you build your city and what policies you have enabled. I can't recall if I mentioned it in the video or not but one of the best things to do is build slowly! Once your city is established you don't need to build immediately when the demand rises but when you're ready!

I just remember everyone around me hating him (parents had a lot of teacher friends). Interested to know about his legacy from a non-biased (or at least mostly non-biased) point of view.

As of episode 16: Total 72,736 (6% children, 13% teens, 21% young adults, 30% adults, and 30% seniors). As of the most recent episode (37): 101,974 (6% children, 13% teens, 22% young adults, 32% adults, and 27% seniors). Almost the same!

@@jester.Gaming Oh ok because my city is similar to that too. It seems to be a common thing for many peoples’ cities that deer population distribution is that way. I believed it was bit of an issue for me because I have more adults and seniors than children and usually those types of distribution leads to pop decline, so I was trying to figure out how to balance my population so that I can have a decent amount of children.

Hi, I'm confused about office zones and educated Cims. I understand the RCI slider, but how do I know when I have too much office zoning going on or not enough? Does it tie into my educated citizens? If I have too many office jobs and not enough education, will those jobs never get filled? Is there an easy way to figure any of this out in the game?? Help! Thanks!!
@jester.Gaming2 жыл бұрын
Hey Seth! Offices are generally for citizens with higher education. If you zone offices without educated citizens you'll get warnings for not enough educated workers. You may also find that you get warnings for not enough workers if the available jobs are for lower educated citizens once your citizens become educated. This can be fixed by levelling up your commercial and industrial buildings and/or enabling the Industry 2.0 Policy which will open up more higher education jobs in industry zones. As for how much of either zone type to put in .... unfortunately you'll have to try it out! You can keep watch of the education levels in the city and try to judge when you need to have those higher education jobs. I usually zone areas relatively slowly so if there is ever a problem I find out before it's too late and I've zoned a big area. I hope this answers your question ... welcome to the channel!

hey Slaven ... good questions, I will try to answer them as best I can. I can't find any information about how many customers a certain sized building would be able to serve. I think it depends on proximity to residential buildings (I think citizens would travel to the closest commercial building), ease of access, and supply of goods. It would serve as many citizens as it could as far as I know. The best way to know how many zoned buildings you need is the demand graph at the bottom of the screen. I hope this helps!

It's all good Duflacko! Sounds like you're having supply chain issues. This may be a result of a couple different things but likely relates back to the traffic in the city. I have a problem with the ratio..i mean a residential zone can support how much commercial/industrial zone ? I mean the other day i do zoning equally then end up many places say not enough worker but when i add some more residential zone it says not enough job 🙄 And sometimes it says both ! I know this is simulation of real life but it's too detail 😂 Anyway is it normal or something i did wrong there , in other platform i ask the same thing and majority says that the problem is the route and traffic... That one is hard for me to fix cause my population are at 95k (again it's close to real life 😂) It's too much to fix and there is no major traffic jam anyway So is there a specific ratio for the zoning ?
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Hey David, sorry for taking so long to respond. I usually go off of the demand bars at the bottom but I zone everything quite slowly so I usually don't run into issues. Your residential buildings (especially high density) can support multiple households. For example - a high density 4x4 level 5 building can have around 26 households and each household can have up to 2 workers. This one residential building now has 52 workers who need jobs. A max level commercial or industrial zone of equivalent size has about half that many jobs. You'll need to have about twice as much commercial+industrial zones as you do residential to have enough jobs for your citizens. This is a very rough estimate and I wouldn't rely on it too much though as there are lots of other factors such as low vs high density zones, senior citizens who don't work, and actually keeping track of the number of cells you have zoned for each type would be impossible. You may be having trouble with education. If your population is uneducated they will be unable to get jobs at high level commercial buildings ... or the other way around and your commercial buildings are too low level and don't have enough jobs for highly educated citizens. Another thing you could do is check out the population tab to see what your unemployment rate is as well as your education tab to see what your citizens education is to try and figure out if they need jobs and what types of jobs they may want! I hope this helps!

@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome David! There are a few things that contribute to levelling up your campus ... students, campus attractiveness, and academic works. Your students will fluctuate over the course of the year, your attractiveness should stay the same if you get it through the campus buildings, and the academic works are only a chance at the end of the academic year (unless you fund a grant then you're guaranteed one). You only need 4 academic works, 800 students, and 450 attractiveness for level 3 which isn't too bad .... but you need to make sure you have all 3 at the end of the academic year.
