@@jester.Gaming Well, that is quite the dedication as well as wherewithal you have, being able to rebuild the city from scratch almost in the same way you did originally while listening to a synthetic version of your voice (recordings actually sound noticeably different from your true voice - but the inflections and way you speak are what make it recognizable [hence why you might not recognize someone over the phone unless they tell you it is them]). Also want to note that your series is helping me quite a bit ever since I transitioned to Cities: Skylines (I originally was a Sim City 4 player, but after my PC no longer supported it, I switched to C:S).

Very informative. One of the first I've watched that actually delineated the different elements of industry (extractors, storage, processors) demonstrating the reasons for the traffic that it produces. Others just say separate industry but don't really show why other than traffic. Showing the layout and demonstrating the flow was very helpful. Now I get it. Thank you.

All the barracks vary in size with the farming industry having the smallest barracks. But in reality you don't need to necessarily put them on the fertile land you want to use you just need to have it in the district. So basically a trick I use is use is if the land that has resources on it for the extractors and then push the lines of the district out a little further over normal land and then build all your factories and barracks in there.

REALLY interesting the way you make the simple road layout and then delete a tiny section to make a smooth curved road. looks way more realistic than if you just use 90 degree turns everywhere. i have run into the problem of traffic from the industrial areas jamming my regular city traffic, im new to the game, however your video has some great ideas i look forward to trying on my next map. great video
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mr Elkatook - it looks a bit more realistic and helps the flow of traffic since the cars don't have to slow down as much! I highly recommend isolating your industrial traffic by not connecting the roads to the rest of your city and giving it it's own on/off ramp from the highway. The design is pretty basic but if you follow the general idea of one way traffic with the different loops you can pretty much have it in any shape you want. Welcome to Cities: Skylines and I'm sure the design will work well in your city!

I create my zones in a similar fashion, though my road 'circuits' tend to be more random as I follow the resource deposits themselves or the contours of the land rather than follow the same layout. This approach gives ore mining zones on mountain sides an especially realistic look as roads follow the contours of the land. All this to say I think your design is excellent and if one understands the principles behind it, one can tweak the road layouts if needed. I do have one question which I find isn't answered very well anywhere, not in youtube vids nor forums on Steam. The functionality of storage (non-warehouse) buildings, what settings do (Fill, Balanced, Empty) beyond their in-game limited descriptions, where to place them in your logistics chain. You've placed yours between extractor and processor sectors, but I've read others advice that says put them at the end of one's logistics chain. Similarly I've read advice telling me to use 'Fill' and 'Empty', never Balanced on raw resource storage. Yet your design seems to work perfectly fine. You see what I'm saying? With all the conflicting advice, I'm not sure how to properly use industry specific storage buildings. (warehouses I understand)
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Hi WestOfEarth, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment, sorry for taking a little while to get back to you! I appreciate the feedback on my design and the insight into how you like to make your industrial area. It was a little bit easier for the forestry and farming industries since the resources are infinite at one location. I may have a follow up video at some point when I move to the oil and ore industries that has a varying layout. In my layout I’m using the storage buildings as a raw resource buffer between the extraction buildings and the processing buildings. I found that despite having enough extraction buildings my processing buildings would occasionally sit idle waiting for raw resources. This may be because the trucks from my extraction buildings were busy exporting goods and unavailable to deliver to my processors. By storing some of the raw resources in the storage building it’s one more set of trucks available to deliver to my processors. You could still place these storage buildings at the end of the logistics chain but in the road layout that I have that would be further away in the overall ‘loop’ causing the trucks to have to drive further to deliver the raw materials to my processors. My processors still sit idol but not as often as when I do not have this raw resource storage buffer. This is briefly mentioned in the third developer diary that was released with the industries dlc (forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/cities-skylines-industries-dev-diary-3-supply-chain-part-1.1123961/). As for what setting to use on these buildings I think that is dependent on the size and performance of your industry. By using Fill I found that my industrial area was importing more resources than it should have been. I was producing enough raw resources but the extraction cycle didn’t sync with the demand of the storage building and if resources from the extraction building weren’t immediately available they would be imported. I think using Empty would defeat the purpose of having the storage building as a buffer but this setting may also send resources to the processing buildings quicker. I don’t think I have ever used this setting so I’m not completely sure. I like to use Balanced because it seems like it is a mix of both the Fill and Empty settings. I can produce enough raw material to keep the building above 50% making the trucks readily available to export out of the city or to the processing buildings (similar to empty setting). Since the building only needs to be filled to 50% capacity the chances of me needing to import material is reduced because the production of my extractor buildings can easily keep up with the demand (similar to Fill setting). These settings are talked about a little bit in the seventh developer diary that was released with the industries dlc (forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/cities-skylines-industries-dev-diary-7-cargo.1124492/). I hope this answers your questions - let me know if there is anything that doesn’t make sense or doesn’t quite answer exactly what you were asking. I’m far from an expert and usually just end up figuring things out through trial and error!

So much in one episode, wow where to start... Firstly, re-creating your entire city, that's some level of commitment and I appreciate it, sure many others do as well :) Did you ever work out that your nature reserve the lights appear on one side of the path, depends which direction you drew the path with the mouse? Anyway... I can completely relate to your microphone issue, once it got into my own head that my microphone quality was bad I stopped streaming for a month until I'd bought & configured a new one. Really appreciate your industry layout explanation, I liked how you cut to a "full" one to see the big picture, that's different and worked very well. Others might have only arrived at that layout conclusion once traffic started to become an issue. Only critique, personal preference, your Exit route was a great solution but I think tunnels are a cowards way out ;) show that road for all to see incase it ends up suffering from congestion in the future.

Hey Quarty, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment - this is some awesome feedback! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos and I'm glad I decided to recreate it as well. My videos weren't being viewed as much back then but I still enjoyed making them nonetheless! I had not figured that out! That is some good information! I just recently made a video where I redesigned the nature reserve. I wasn't quite as picky with the lights this time though, haha :) The microphone isn't perfect but I think it's much better than it was before. I still run into some issues where I get minor static/feedback when I record during high CPU usage. I've been filming some of my most recent videos while the game is paused to reduce the CPU usage and then editing different unpaused footage on top of it. I wanted to make sure that people knew the layout was going to work before they decided to put it in their city - sort of a proof of concept. It would have been terrible for people to put the layout in their city only to find out traffic was absolutely terrible in the end. There are definitely ways to make it more realistic or better looking but this way still works! The tunnels! You're not the first one to bring up some of my tunnels :D ... I agree, they are a bit of an easy way out. I don't mind them too much but I should probably try and stay away from them to make things look a little more realistic. Thanks again for the feedback - welcome to the channel!

Quick question, should I want to expand significantly so as to boost exports, how do I expand? What principles should I keep in mind when extending the industrial road layout?
@jester.Gaming2 жыл бұрын
Hey Min Guk Chi, welcome to the channel, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. The main thing you'll need to worry about is the volume of traffic moving through the area - the larger and/or more dense the industry area gets the high volume you'll have. Controlling traffic with the one way roads and dedicated loops for each part of the supply chain will help significantly. Direct access to the highway and other outside connections (train, boat) will also help manage the traffic in the area. I hope this helps!
@TechieXP4 жыл бұрын
I usually make "T" junction. Place a plantation on top, and add trees just like you do. Then I place small storage on one side of the T underneath and a specific production right across. The main road is what will be at the bottom going one way back to the highway or a cargo area and a warehouse.This way the only trucks hitting the main road are taking items to a big warehouse and cargo area that also sits on a T near the exit back to the highway. Then I have a one way road that goes around the back and starts the cycle of trucks going back to production away from main road where it is traffic only going back out. Maybe I will do a video and show it.
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, that sounds like an interesting design! It seems like it works similar to what I have shown in the video with a loop controlling the flow of traffic and separating extractors/production/storage along the route. I would be interested to see what you've come up with!

@jester.Gaming3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim - it's no problem at all, thank you for making and sharing the video! I totally see what you're describing with the "T" layout and organizing the flow of traffic through it. Your layout works really well in that you can add a bunch of these T's on and make it as small or as large as you want. The other roads in the layout can be used to control the flow of traffic in and around these T's. Your industrial area was significantly larger than mine in the end and traffic was flowing really well with the number of buildings you had!
@diegoskater6264 жыл бұрын
If you want your processors to always use materials from the extractors nearby instead of importing products from the highway, put a one way road exiting the industrial complex as the only outside conection. To avoid processors importing materials from the train cargo station, place it outside the one way exit road.
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
hi diego, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment - that's good advice! I find that once the extractors are in place there is rarely a need to have resources imported (but it does happen occasionally). Eventually when we put in the oil and ore industry they'll be almost entirely import only since those resources are finite and we don't have a lot on the map!
@francoisgagnonlemieux31353 жыл бұрын
@@jester.Gaming Even on vanilla there is a mod for that, making it unlimited. Those area depletes way too fast. At least they could've make it last 5 times longer.

You can use the industry area tab to work out what's happening and manage your industry a lot better than counting production levels. What you want, ideally, is that 100% of your production is local, that is you should not show any "import" on the pie chart at the top. This can be misleading when you first set up your industry as storage yards/warehouses will import to meet their target capacity. However once they are at capacity, there should be no more imports. Then you have 3 production pipelines, the two industry pipelines that produce finished goods from your buildings and then an overflow pipeline of raw materials. Raw materials sell for much, much less than finished goods so if you have consistent outflow of raw materials (centre arrow) then you have too many extractor buildings (or not enough processing buildings). Adjust your building count so that 100% of your raw materials are being processed into high value goods, without any imports being required. For some resources, there can be a separate demand for raw materials as well (crops is an example), so if you find that everything balances on the industry area tab but you still have imports for some reason, you need to have a little more extractor capacity to meet that side demand.

Nicely done. I had inadvertently done a (much) uglier version of loop within a loop, just figuring that every truck didn't need to do the full route, but didn't divide it into an extractor vs processor loop....genius. I also hadn't considered multiple maintenance buildings, or putting trees down ahead of time to "beef up" tree production. Now I can place at least Forestry near other industry to take advantage of nearby train lines without putting railroads in weird places. Now, my question. What are dimensions on original design? How many squares wide and how many long? Do those dimensions work for all industry, or does it change from oil to ore to forest to farm? PS I like the way you mirrored with your farming. Why not switch sides on one of the cargo train stations and keep one straight line feeding both train stations? Easy Peasy.
@jester.Gaming3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike R, thank you for the comment - sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I don't have my city available to me at the moment (I'm away from my main computer) so I will have to get back to you on the dimensions. You may have to tweak the number of extractor and processor buildings to maintain good traffic flow but in general the layout should work for any industry. I'm planning to eventually return to the area and make these look a little more realistic but for now they are functional. The reason I have the cargo train on the other side is due to the direction of the traffic. For your cargo train terminal you want to make sure your traffic is approaching from the side with the stacked containers. The traffic coming in and out of the facility will cross each other and cause some slowdowns if you have vehicles entering from the other side. I hope that makes sense. Welcome to the channel!

This series, in my opinion as a relative beginner, is more suited to advanced players. Which is sad because you have a very pleasant and calm delivery. I've hung in there from episode one but will not be going further I'm afraid. You keep saying you "don't want to bore us with watching you do....." and then high speed through something, or in this case jumping straight to level 3 industry area. Which buildings come first? In what order? Where does your cargo rail go? I had hoped to continue trying to build this city along with you. But you've left me in the dust I'm afraid. Good luck though, you have a lot a talent!
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, thank you for the feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment! My goal was to focus on the road layout and general design but leave the industry type and building placement up to the player - skipping ahead to show that the layout would still be functional when it was fully levelled up. In retrospect it may have been better to have this as a standalone episode unrelated to the development of the city. I'm still relatively new to making these videos and trying to figure out the best way to present them ... unfortunately I likely won't find something that works for everyone though! I encourage you to keep going with your city ... I spend lots and lots (lots!) of time trying different iterations of the same thing before I find something that will work for a video. You'll probably come up with something that works and looks better than what I have! Thank you for your support!
@rmcgill5753 жыл бұрын
Barracks and maintenance do not need to be right next to the plots, just within that "district." In your map, I would have placed them between the railroad and highway where the land is never going to be as valuable. Don't forget police, fire, garbage. Don't remember if medical is required or not since I just automatically lump them all together. I have seen examples where plots and R & C are interspersed but on entirely separate road networks.

Thanks for checking out another video R McGill! I haven't had many issues with services other than garbage. I do have the new transfer stations that came out with the Sunset Harbour DLC that I need to place throughout the city. Hey JDog36 - these are 2 lane one way roads. There is one that comes with the base game that is immediately available to you. I like your helpful, concise, no nonsense format. Just one question: If you produce more raw materials than your processors can handle, do the raw materials get exported?
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig, thank you for the feedback - I'm glad you like the video! That's correct! Your extractors will export raw materials that are not used by your processors. Occasionally you'll get issues where you have "Not enough buyers for goods" where the extractor facility is actually full and unable to extract more until goods are exported. You can add warehouses to deal with this issue but that may cause more problems with traffic. Currently in our city the only mode of export is highway but there are also rail, ship, and plane. Eventually as we provide more options for export I think it will be a little bit easier for our industry to export goods and we won't run into issues with not enough buyers!

Hi Mark Vogel, thanks for taking the time to leave some feedback and a questions! You'll still need to have a connection for workers. The name for these buildings is a bit deceptive ... as far as I know the "barracks" don't actually house any of the workers. They act just like any other industrial building and citizens come to work at the barracks but still go home to their regular house in the city. Other than the workplace their only other benefit is to provide an increase in production rate. I hope this helps!

Although i have a question: does these industry areas need a connection to our city to sell goods to our commercial or they just get those products and go to highway and somewhere else? And i have an issue with my generic industries that they say "not enough buyers for products", does this mean i dont have enough commercial? The industry area has connection with 6 lane arterial to the highway, so i dont think connection is the issue. If u answer it makes me a really happy mayor :) thank you
@jester.Gaming3 жыл бұрын
Hi Görkem, welcome to the channel! Your industry and commercial areas definitely need to be connected! They don't have to be directly side by side but there should be relatively easy access between the two. The "not enough buyers for products" can be from a few different things ... you're producing too many goods because you have too much industry, not enough commercial areas buying products as you said, and/or not enough outside connections. If you have access to train, ship, or cargo planes you could also add one of those to increase the number of different ways your industries can transport goods. Depending on how bad the issue is changing just one of these could make all the difference! I hope this helps :)

Where does the train go? I'm always confused about how to handle railroad.
@jester.Gaming3 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan Jones, great question! At the time of making this episode our city did not have access the regional train network to import and export goods. I could have set up a line between the farming/forestry industry and the generic industrial area but decided to wait until I had access to the regional lines. Your timing couldn't be better though... I released a video connecting everything together yesterday (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3OldYCNZ6upj6c)! What I made was maybe a little bit more complex than what is really required. Depending on the size of your city you'll need a few cargo terminals to spread out the traffic and give easy access for your citizens. You'll also need to connect to the regional train line and/or other terminals if you want to transfer cargo between them. You'll have to be careful with your train network as it can also have backups and get your trains stuck!

Hi Leinard, are you talking about vehicles coming off of the highway? Does "all the traffic" include vehicles going to the rest of your city? Make sure you've isolated your industrial area by not connecting the roads to the rest of the city and giving the industrial area its own on/off ramp. I would also check to make sure the game hasn't automatically put in a stop light/sign at the transition from the highway to the 4 lane road. I hope this helps!

@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
Are the roads configured so that it is a one way loop going through the industrial area? For example, when cars reach that first intersection they should only be able to go to the right to enter, loop through, and exit from the left back towards the highway. I would also check to make sure there is no stop sign added to the intersection.

@@jester.Gaming it is but they keep stopping due to the traffic light so they don’t really keep going, also some keeps looping around for no reason, I’m using 6 lane 1 way roads to do this
@jester.Gaming4 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be a traffic light at the intersection! I think since you're using roads that are so wide it is automatically putting in a traffic light. If you go to the Traffic Routes info view (left panel and the icon looks like arrows going left and right) there should be a tab called Junctions in it. In the Junctions tab you can change the signage at an intersection - lights, stop signs, nothing. This intersection should have nothing. In my city I'm only using 2 lane 1 way industrial roads and those are large enough to support my traffic so you might also want to try and downgrade yours to something smaller!

Hey Batataglins, I've been looking into making an asset for this layout.
