Several mistakes were made but overall not a bad tutorial for total beginners ! The most glaring mistakes are : -you dont start developping a city on both side of your collector road you dont need to and it makes services coverage near impossible early on ! -the most important building for growth are educative ones you always want to plop them asap and have the best coverage possible to level up your building - water pipes need to be spaced by 13 tiles no more no less it s a waste of $$$, -If you have industry and commercial demand in excess but no residential demand you can increase their respective taxes ratio just enough for the demand to not stack -Services have a radius area of effect early on you want them as centered as possible -you ve build too much intersections on your collector this will lead to trafic problems later on . -overall you want to avoid crossroads, you can build an entire city with only tbone intersections this will eliminate a lot of trafic issues .

I'd love a version of this for European cities/cities that don't follow grids. When I first got into C:S I built using grids (despite being from Germany and a city that's "naturally" grown over centuries and is basically a lot of now interconnected villages). It was super easy, but also quickly took the enjoyment out of the game. I try to build more naturally feeling cities now, but it's always a very bumpy process. I know that is to be expected specifically because these cities aren't built with maximum efficiency in mind, but surely there's something I could do better. One of the things I struggled with was the vanilla street styles in C:S clearly being US-inspired, and one street type is limited to one speed limit etc.

I like it in general, but I do think he is setting himself up for problems down the line when it comes to traffic. Two big things I would change. 1. The start for all cities off the highway is always awkward, but what I like to do is "bring the highway into town" using the small one way road tool. You can upgrade those to actual highways later, and create a proper service interchange to your first main road. I then use that first main road basically the way this guy does mostly with commercial districts. 2. I like the grid as a starting point, but that is a lot of intersections from local roads to the collector road which will eventually be the arterial road. It isn't an issue now, but it will be when the population gets to 12k-20k.
@vande23303 жыл бұрын
@@jimland4359 that’s a fair assessment. However, traffic in CS is inherently flawed. After a certain point you can count on traffic being borked. Even with traffic mods it’s still a pain because the computer naturally follows the shortest route regardless of heavy traffic. It’s a compounding problem with no real solution. Hopefully they fix it in CS 2
@TwilightStar912 жыл бұрын
@@jimland4359 I've had multiple cities with roads like this (they're very Australian, we here in Perth only have one major separated freeway through our cities and then as a ring road, so we have big collectors with intersections). I use TMPE and no despawning and my traffic is always 80+. Turning off the traffic lights is a big one, since if you don't have enough traffic to justify them stopping, you're just needlessly slowing them down.

Great many tips for a beginner like myself - the road grid issue you had in the beginning though, I think it was because when you started expanding Main Street it wasn't at a perfect 180º angle from the highway but slightly tilted; about the pollution in industrial zones I've realized it's better to place the landfills on the outskirts because they don't spread pollution, so the core area of the district can have all the factories and plants - I'm sure you know that, just something that the planning here made me think of but again, this is just the beginning of your series. I just discovered your guide series and I absolutely love it so far. The music is cool, your voice is calm and soothing, you give great advice, it's perfection. My main problem is traffic so I hope you give some advice about that in later videos, but so far, it's awesome, thanks a lot !

I had decided I was not going to buy this. Then I thought I'd watch this straight through. I stopped halfway through the video and installed the game. So much better than most beginner's guides. Everything to the point.

Really looking forward to this! I just started playing and while I've watched all of Bluffside, Verde Beach, 5B1C and some builds from Biffa, Egg, et al., this is really going to help. I think my biggest issue is getting too excited when things unlock and not being patient and letting the city grow naturally. The tip about zoned parcels note developing even when there's demand was really helpful! Thanks!

This is one of the best "Start up Tutorials" out there right now. Just one detail to consider is putting the industrial/powerplant on the "Right Turn" (or LEFT side if you are British or Japanese) side coming off the freeway to keep the coal trucks from jamming up.

Looking forward to the disasters add on as that’s when you’ll also introduce uncontrollable fires into your builds! 😝

I’m looking forward to seeing how your City grows, I’ve just recently played on this map ( Vanilla no Mods) and I reached a population of 100K, it will be interesting how you deal with traffic problems, good luck.

I'm sure with the Transit DLC, basic mods, and roadway hierarchy, he can manage to keep things in the city flowing quite nicely!

I, uh... ended up here early? I think the Tutoria playlist isn't private/unlisted, so I was able to see the video when I just happened to check your channel for a playlist. For what it's worth: I think this video is going to be incredibly helpful. Wish I'd seen it years ago when I had no idea what I was doing.

I just want to add my thanks. This is THE BEST guide I've seen yet for this game. Your explanations for everything you're doing are so helpful. I've tried this game a couple times in the past but without much success. This is the first time I've had a long-term balanced budget. Thank you!

Will do. That's one of the reasons I wanted to outline the series expectations up front. Starterville was only supposed to be a one-off that grew into something else. I figured it is time to make it a real mini-series.

I LOVE this. I've been playing forever but there's still some really simple stuff that trips me up (like that dreaded first interchange!) Question: will you be covering beautification throughout? I think that you find a really good balance between beautifying/personalizing cities effectively without making the process seem to demanding or unapproachable. I'd love to see some tips on that, whether it's sprinkled throughout the series or on its own!

Yes - starting with the next episode and really diving in in episode 3 when Parklife is introduced. I think its something you have to keep up with or you fall behind and never really catch up!

Since it’s on Game Pass I’ve been trying to get into Cities Skylines. Must have re-installed 3 times with failed cities each time on regular, and no concept of how a city grows in sandbox mode. After following your advice and hearing your clear design rationale, today was the first time I looked at my growing city and smiled :)

THANK YOU FOR THIS! I’ve been desperate to get somewhere within Cities on my Series X but quickly fail due to lack of money and power/water. I followed your video whilst starting afresh and now have a thriving city of 6k and over $250k cash! Early days but my itch is being scratched and now I feel more confident. Soooo many good tips in this. Can’t wait to see what the remaining 23 videos will teach me!

Loved this video! I normally play with all the cheats on, so normally my main concern is just planning roads and amenities. I normally just slap everything down and then try to make it work with tons of public transportation...but I still end up with a lot of congestion. I feel like I learned a lot about how to planning and I'm excited to go play and try some of your ideas! Thanks!

Thanks a lot, this looks like a great intro. I will use many of your recommendations, except the American square zoning grid, which I find ugly, so I'll try to make it a bit more criss-cross , more angles and maybe a few curves if I feel daring. How do you plan for future wider roads and rondabouts? Do you just demolish some buildings to make it fit, or should you plan ahead and leave space

Great video! I have spent 100's of hours playing Rollercoaster Tycoon growing up, so I bought this game and all the DLC like 2 years ago and was excited to build something massive, but every time I tried, I would get intimidated after 30 minutes and end up putting the game away for a month or two until wanting to try again...and it became a cycle of putting the game down after 30 minutes over and over, but now I got that spark again!
