I think it would be better just to have like a set of level 3 spells with different costs associated with them in order to create each of the different oozes. The cost could grow proportionally with the CR of the ooze you make. You could then have these spells fall into all 3 of: Transmutation, Conjuration and Necromancy in order that learning those spells is half-price for whichever school you choose.

The Oblex and the Gelatinous Cube are my two favourite monsters in D&D. Something you could add to the various oozes is a self cleaning instinct. Those that actually move could push themselves through cracks as a way of cleaning themselves of undigested material. This could leave random piles of bones and treasure lying about next to walls. Players might force or trick the ooze somehow into going through a crack to make it shed its treasure.

The oblex has got to be the most unique concept for an ooze in a long time. We need more creative ideas for oozes. You know that clean-up crew comment starting at 1:55 makes it sound like oozes could feasibly take on super big threats like dragons or demon infestations. Now I’m wondering if oozes instinctively hassle those kinds of enemies when they take up residence beneath the surface, usually not winning unless they show up in big numbers, but acting as a constant nuisance to them. I might have to come up with some kind of side quest about that now.

so the party enter a room with obvious marks of burn and dried blood but they don't have a rogue and ignore the potential danger of traps. can't blame them: paladin, war-cleric, druid and divine-soul-sorcerer. TPK... and now? a undead party!!! elf ghost-sorcerer, Death Knight-Paladin Oathbreaker, Mummy-druid, the cleric played a necromancer-wizard roleplay adventurers while trying to hide the undead nature was really fun

1:17, that's a pretty good nod and use of the Dies Irae, especially how it ties to how you just mentioned Gregorian chants a few moments before. (It being a good use of it because Dies Irae means death and judgement day, judgement for the amoeba's cursed life.) Anyway, that was a funny little nerd nod to the obscurely known.

In my starfinder campaign I had the players fight a homebrew ooze. Well the party went to get their ship and left one person to guard the crates on the lift as it was moving. Well he noticed a black ooze plastered against the back wall digesting a monster. It wasn't melting the monster, but more like mummifying the monster quickly in front of him. So he decides it's a good idea to touch it while it's eating. So it latches onto his arm. After a few bad rolls on his part and a few good rolls on my part, a few really good rolls on his parties part, and a few more stupid actions from everyone; he now has to wear a prosthetic for his left arm.

The blood vessel and white blood cell analogy legit gave me inspiration. Like, what if the earth itself was a living thing, sort of? And just like a living thing, it has natural defenses against foreign bodies, with these defenses being, well, oozes.

The the gelatinous cube, I have grate fences they can slither through and all the stuff caught within them stays behind. That way, the floating items within don't give away their position to more keen adventurers. Also, it's a good way to foreshadow if the scoured clean walls were missed.

I had three players comically fall into a gelatinous cube. the first one didn’t see it and fell in, the second fell in as well, and the third tried to pull the second one out and she got pulled in by him. The Wizard then had the great idea of using fire ball, and they got launched out of the cube.

I use a gelatinous cubes in a seemless metal cube as a trash removal system in a game. It was just supposed to be a cute little detail for lore and a stealth puzzle later ... then one player slid down the garbage chute to avoid a guard.

I really like the idea of an Ooblex. I cool scenario would be your party stumbling across a ramshackle town were everyone seems normal but just slightly.....off. After some exploring and investigation by the couple actual humans there it turns out the town is actually just one giant Ooblex and their myriad of clones.

So I read the light novels to Overlord, and one of the characters in that fits into this heading. She is whats known as a predatory slime. Much like the ooblex, she can shapeshift, but she has some interesting abilities as well. Inside of her is basically like a bag of holding... full of acid that she can precisely control. She looks like a normal human (very attractive) woman, but can not only absorb a full grown man entirely, leaving no sign he is inside her, but also carry tons of equipment from magic gear to scrolls that she can choose NOT to melt. She can also choose how fast or slow she wants to melt her prey, transform her body into simple tools like the t-1000, and take class levels as well. And the cherry on top? Pretty much immune to melee combat as any weapon you swipe through her will start dissolving and its about as effective as slashing a lake, and if you physically touch her, i hope you enjoy being consumed and dissolved. I kinda want to see a monster like this statted out. The ability to add class levels means you could easily alter how it hunts as well as boost its level for varying encounter challenge ratings. Imagine if at high levels you find yourself being stalked through an underground lair by one of these with high rogue levels? I hope your party rogue has some seriously boosted spot checks. Or a spellcaster predatory slime casting hold person on you then approaching you with a sadistic smile. And since its fully human intelligent it can have all sorts of clever strategies instead of just oozing in your general direction or hoping you step into its pool.

I once made a village who would sacrifice their dead to an Ooblex just so that they could see an echo of their loved ones again. Content with its food being brought to it willingly, the Ooblex settled in the church to the God of Knowledge to which it made a lure that looked like a head priest. The party was conflicted whether to get involved or not when they found out and eventually left the town as it was after scrutinizing the intentions of the Ooblex Priest and determined it wasn't going to do anything stupid to ruin its cushy position.

Imagine going underground and just stumbling across a town full of seemingly ordinary people. They seem nice enough, but for some reason the ground is covered in nasty smelling red gunk. You can't pick up your foot without pulling a little slime trail up off the ground. Eventually one of the townies convines you stock up on supplies to rest there. Then you wake in horror, hogtied in the center of town as the "villagers" prepare to "introduce you to the mayor". Your gear is being taken back to the store where you resupplied, and the slime starts to engulf you. Your form will serve to entice more adventurers to fall into this same trap, and your memories will feed the grandfather oblex.

I didn’t know about Oblex’s but they’re a really interesting creature. I like the idea of one being located beneath a location and sending a tentacle through any number of tunnels or pipes and reforming into a clone at the other end. So they’re able to be anywhere at a moment’s notice. Maybe that would make for a cool twist boss as part of a campaign, you think this mysterious person who keeps showing up at weird locations of this castle is a ghost or magic or something only to discover that no, they’re just a hongry slime.
