Whoop meant to pin a comment, so I'll add some more info to compensate: Stibbles is a successful Kickstarter campaign that we're working on completing, set to be fulfilled in around Sep/Oct. See I actually made a tankard into a mimic. An adventurer went to drink and there was no beer left (i actually passed out solo cups to drink soda from and one had "uh-oh" written on the bottom, so it was random who this happened to). He got it refilled and watched the level of ale slowly go down. The party then fought an inebriated mimic that was used in an attempt to assassinate them.

My two favourite Mimics from games I've run, and one from one I played in. A door at the end of a 5ft wide corridor. The party were forced to fight in a line, around the rogue who was glued to it's door handle. That one taught the paladin that even if he's focused on melee, he should probably have a ranged option. A wall. After someone tunnelled into a room, they used a trained mimic to hide the hole, then attacked people who got too curious. And: The gold in a chest. Not the chest itself, that was fine, everyone was glad there was no trap, then Bam! A fist made of gold coins smacks someone in the face.

Suddenly humanoid, slim, grotesque limps spread out, lifting the chest which reveals its containments of sharp teeth and a disgusting long tongue. His legs began to carry it to me, who tried desperatly to escape! Unsuccesfull. His arms reached after my helpless body, pulled me into his endless hungering mouth. After he shoved his death into me countless time to slowly, but steadily kill me, he gulped down what remained of my violated unregoncisable corbse. The anime Dungeon Meshi has an interesting spin on mimics. Their version are giant hermit crabs, which use treasure chests, wooden crates, or furniture instead of shells. Like the traditional mimic, they're mostly ambush predators, but they can crawl/scuttle like normal crabs.

I made a pub called the "Toothsome Tavern" in my current campaign. All the tables are domesticated mimics that eat the scraps after meals and laugh if they hear a really funny joke. My players have naturally frequented the place endlessly. Just waiting until I drop the bombshell that the foundation of the tavern is a mimic that carries the tavern from location to location and gets fed all the cutoffs and scraps from butchered animals and chopped plants

Favorite thing I ever did with a group of players was the mimic farm. Had a large pit in a dungeon full of chests, and most of them were mimics. The best part, after they captured the bbeg, they brought him back down and tossed him in. In exchange for eating him they gave the part the loot they were guarding.

@@coltonwilliams4153, it's a good series, though there are some negatives. It's NSFW and there is some sexual abuse/rape in book 2. The actual plot is good, though. It's the trials and tribulations of a mimic in an RPG world who lucks into levelling up early on. As it gains more sentience and abilities, it ends up leaving the dungeon it was born in and taking on the wider world. The author has revamped bits and pieces while putting together the audiobooks and they're probably better than the original web series

One of a favorite race of mimics in fantasy are the Ols from Deltora Quest. They're essentially shapeshifters that come in three types: Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. The first two are pretty similar. Both bear the mark of their creator, the Shadow Lord, somewhere on their body, but the length of time they can remain transformed varies, with Grade 1's having the shortest duration, and both are limited by the size their forms can take. Grade 3's can stay in whatever form they want, be it an average person or a tiny bird, or even a rock. Their bodies are devoid of the Shadow Lord's mark regardless of whether or not their transformed, and their intelligence is far greater than the first two Grades. One of the main characters actually turn out to be a Grade 3 at the end of the first series. And as for the Ols true form, its essentially a ghastly blob with bottomless pits in place of eyes and a mouth. And they can only be killed by stabbing them through the heart, which is on the right side of their body

I am glad this video exists! I absolutely love mimics! 2 years ago, my friend was running a game, and in his world, he ran mimics wonderfully. They were intelligent natural creatures, and he made them much more common than usual. (He too loved mimics and sentient objects lol) Us adventurers were also aware of mimics (we asked if we would know if their existence, and he said "oh yeah, they're common enough") and how he explained them was "material that they eat, helps them grow, and they can take on that form". If they eat wood, metal, or living tissue, they break it down, and add it to their biology. They could also speak common. We wound up having a mimic ally. Very useful for interrogations lol.

In a campaign run from scratch by a friend of mine, he set up a chest alone at the end of a corridor... in a cobalt lair. My dwarf monk immediatly attacked it with his extendo staff. Nothing. The wooden lid caved in slightly. Seems clear. Over to our resident rouge who unlocks the chest no problem to find rags, a ring and 5 gold pieces. He immediatly and specifically lifts the goodies over his head like LoZ only to have his right arm chewed apart mummy scarab style by 5 mimic coins!

Mr Rhexx did a good video on Mimics. As for my favourite representation of Mimics, look up Everyone Loves Large Chests. The main character is a Mimic and let's just say the Title is apt in some points and it just keeps growing from it. It finished naturally rather recently as it's creator wanted and I've been reading it for a long time. Good stuff for a fan of subversive fantasy

My favorite mimic encounter was a room that was a mimic forming itself around an open area in a Dwarven ruin that was really the entrance to the mines but the mimic created a room attaching itself to the end of a corridor in order to trap the party then proceeded to root them in place while attempting to kill them. It resulted in an incredibly unique combat scenario where the objects in the room were like pseudo armor for the mimic that it shifted around to prevent the party from hitting it and defend itself and the party had to work around these objects from rooted positions while making saves or coming up with other ways to get unstuck to try and move around.

i really like that, the idea that mimics are not the final form and are on their way to becoming shape-shifting monsters. maybe a member of the party is actually a mimic. maybe one of the players is a mimic and just wants to tag along so he can eat the goblins the party kills. maybe the actual party member died a while ago and the mimic wanted to copy them for some reason. maybe the mimic party member is a wizard who collects familiars, except the familiars are all mimics too. you opened my eyes to a lot of cool ideas, thank you so much :)

I just started my first campaign DMing and yesterday I sprang a mimic on them. It was 3 level 3 players. They saw through the trap, and attacked the mimic in disguise. I figured they’d probably nearly alpha strike it and it’d get a single hit in and die. Things were going exactly as planned until it’s turn came around. It natural 20s a bite attack on the Warforged Paladin. 30 damage. (Full damage plus an extra damage roll.) Downs the Warforged in one hit. I felt bad so in it’s loot I placed a health potion. It’s like the third room in a dungeon they are trapped in from a cave in.

The mimic being a colony of specialized micro organisms is very interesting. Towards the end it felt like a ancestor to other types of shape shifters or at least, a distand relative. I once had the idea that mimics are some kind of "mushroom" type thing, created from spores that attach to objects, growing inside them and taking their shape. Combining those too might be a fun idea.

Great ideas of expanding mimic lore! Funny enough, this reminds me of a one shot a friend of mine DMed based off of John Carpenter's The Thing (using the actual board game pieces from The Thing board game for the monsters!) The party arrived at a strange castle where scientists were doing studies on some kind of ancient mimic they unearthed in a cave, which could actually take the form of living beings (and assimilated half the research team). When the party was knocked out due to a gas leak, the DM presented us with 4 envelopes, with instructions on how to act if we were 'infected' or not and had to hide it from the other party members. It was a wild game, with my half orc barbarian being the Final Girl of the one shot, only for a total TPK to happen when the burning castle fell just as she had been killed by the mimic monster (and eventual assimilation into the ancient mimic).

I like the mimic that can fold up it's body with a bunch of creaky joints and are basically super proficient circus acrobats. They have to find the physical objects and get in them, like a snail with it's shell. It makes for good rp and combat when their AC is just their 'shell' so a mimic that finds a nice iron chest has succeeded a bit more than a mimic in an old wooden one.
