In this hat making tutorial you will learn how to create a hat block using expanding foam and one of your old hats for a shape base. I will demonstrate the technique using my old cloche hat.

This was a great tutorial. Thank you for the video! Just a note from someone who works with expanding foam moulds daily: If you mist the plastic with water instead of using vaseline then you won't have the problem with gaps and bubbles. Expanding foam needs two things to work. . . moisture and air. If it can't get both it won't work correctly. :-)

Knowing how to make your own hat block Its a great skill, as wooden hat block are indeed very expensive especially when you jut starting out. I made a lot of hand made hat block at the beginning of my millinery career xx

Yes absolutely. The material is softer than wooden hat blocks so using pins for blocking is much easier. It is a great alternative for hat blocks even though it’s not as solid and lasting as wooden hat blocks. Hope that helps, Elena

Is this block squishy or quite strong ?

It’s very light but quite solid and great for blocking purposes. Obviously not same as wooden hat block, but still serves a great job.
