I never knew Jagraj Singh but in my darkest days i found his videos on Sikhi and it literally changed my life. When i discovered he had passed i wept, such a loss of a beautiful and inspirational soul. I then watched the documentary his brother made about him and it made me appreciate him even more. He stood up for what he believed and set out on a mission to make Sikhism accessible to everyone regardless of their background and blessed us with the gift and wisdom of the Gurus. Thank you brother, you have truly left a legacy with this channel.

I’m a white girl who grew up in the west, I wish the west knew these values. For me I was 14 when I had my first child i now have two children with the same person but we are separated and he has FOUR children altogether. Since then I found Sikhi and through it I found my husband who has the same values as me. I had no idea at the time of when I had kids that I hadn’t even figured out who I was let alone what I wanted in a partner! Same goes for most white people. I will be teaching my now 6 year old and 4 year old this when the time arrives of the dating phase. Waheguru ji maharaj bless all of these clouded mind people with awareness and naam 🙏

I'm really glad you addressed this subject. I never understood why people made such a big deal of dating. Especially when they can't see themselves marrying their boyfriend or girlfriend. It's a waste of time and emotion. In dating it seems like boyfriends or girlfriends only satisfy trivial, unimportant short term needs rather than satisfying the long term needs and values upon which marriage is built.

Awesome! Thank you so much for the education! This applies at any age. I just found my 'forever partner', after a series of failed relationship attempts over the past two decades. I just met a Sikhi woman from India. I myself am not of Punjabi or Indian heritage or ancestry, but have since childhood, identified with the morals and ideals of the Sikhi teachings. The Golden Rule, to treat others as you want to be treated, and respect to earn respect, are my guiding principles. Being of Scandinavian ancestry, the part here where you mention that the heart is dangerous and does not follow logic, I have a personal motto to keep me conscious of that: " The Bear should follow the Owl" (the bear is the heart, the owl is the mind), and this corresponds with two tattoos - on my back, a full back piece with a Viking style bear. On my chest, an owl with wigs outstretched. As long as I move forward, the bear will follow the owl. If I walk backward, looking back, I'm going in the wrong direction, and will fail to make progress. Cheers!

We never dated in human evolution. Culturally dating has only existed for a few generations. Partners were always vetted by family and then a marriage took place. It’s then that a couple fell in love. Falling in love is the easiest part, we’ve also made it the most important part. This has never been the case. Alignment of family status and values was always placed before this and the results are clear, families stayed together. We now lead with our emotions and you have broken families. Marriage was in place to protect our women and children and hold a man accountable. I’m so grateful to have woken up to this before it’s too late for my kids. I also fell in love first and I’m reverting back to tradition for my daughters, as I see it always made the most sense.

Yeah that is what I think as well. No matter what religion or culture, I don't see dating involved in them. Maybe there could be a few cultures where they date. But I want to know why was dating promoted so much in the society. Maybe it helps government or corporates in getting more money and it doesn't let families get too rich. Since dating and all those divorces costs a lot of money.

@mindfuel__972 жыл бұрын
I think the problem these days is that no one is serious when they enter a relationship. You should enter a relationship with only intentions to marry, then there will be no conflicts or confusion in future. I know this myself from personal experience. Sometimes you fall in love and you are soo mesmerised by the feeling, you confuse lust for love. Marriage is when both partners are ready financially and mentally. There’s no issue with dating as long as you confirm with each other your intentions are to marry if you both are right for each other. I think when you meet the one you just know, that they are the one.

Look at domestic violence rate of western to India.

The main role of Sikh woman is to stand with his husband, if her husband is Gursikh. Only way sikh woman will get respect, recolonization, Identity etc if she is the wife of true sardar. Thats it. If her husband is Sikh, she will be automatically his Sikhni. So, she should always look towards her Sikh husband. And A Sikh should always look towards Guru. A sikh should have the Ideology of Guru, and his sinhgni should respect and follow his ideology. In this way both will have same ideology ,i.e Ideology of Guru, then they will live with harmony without disagreements or fight i.e Ideology of Guru. Thats how sikhi works or will work.
@satpalsinghcheema81647 жыл бұрын
What a load of absulute hog wash. That is the most anti Sikh thing I have ever read. How can you sit there and spout such patriarchal and sexist remarks. I dare you to say this to mata sahib Kaur. You are confusing culture with religion. Sikhi teaches us that women and men are equal. WOMEN DO NOT NEED MEN TO "GET RESPECT". A woman gets respect from her actions and how she is seen through the guru. How can you sit here and speak such filth about your sisters.. she does not need a man to define her. that's what the guru's have taught us through the ages. I get you are probably from INDIA and not a custom to the thought of equal rights. but please don't go around speaking that anti gurumuck views. a women's"ROLE" IS the exact same as a man. we are all equal. I don;'t claim to be an expert but I can say that from what glorious stories I have read from the guru's equality is a total must in the Sikh ideology.
@sukhrajsinghmehrok74437 жыл бұрын
Satpal Singh Cheema if you are not expert, why are giving arguments. And i said her husband and Gursikh. I said woman has to follow her Gursikh Husband not ang man, what is wrong in that. And it is proved according to gurbani. A woman will have great fortune who has Gursikh husband of she want to go on Gursikhi path too. And you peoples are doing parchar all over the world that man and woman are equal. Tell me how they are equal. Tell me single line in gurbani which says both are equal. Man has different roles woman has different. In gurbani there are lines like "so kyon mannda akhiye, jit jameh rajan" this mean that we should not say woman to be bad, this doesn't mean that woman is equal to man. Offcourse sikhi is very much unique and extraordinary from other religions but this is not the way that sikhi is different that both are equal. Sikhi is different because sikhi clearly states the definitions of nirakar, soul, brahm and parbrahm. The focus of sikhi is on one, what is that one. But other religions are caught up in maya and there focus is not on one Lord.

Yes they do. At least where I live. When you have been in the community and gurudwara for long enough, they will start asking you if you are married or not, when you are of appropriate age for marriage. If you say no, they will ask why? Then you can tell them that you don't have parents or any family or any blood relatives. They will help you find a partner and get married. This exact thing happened to someone I know.

Agree with the points, except the only people to tell are parents and if they are not present (maybe deceased) then blood relatives. Friends are not the one giving away a daughter at the Gurdwara. The other important area to consider is level of spirituality and where they are on the Sikhi path compared to the other. Best way is arranged, not heard in history anywhere that a hukam was taken to check if the partner was suitable either, do BoS have any sources that reflect this practice?
@Neklank9 жыл бұрын
After 'parents' accept the rishta is ok, then there is no harm in going to Guru Sahib to seek blessings, otherwise it is just being clever after having found ones own partner, like what happens in camps, and shamefully Gurudwaras as well.

He's basically saying that first the families will get involved, see if they're thinking/values/ outlook is compatible, then they would ask the man and woman to meet and see if they are compatible. If everything is matching then you go ahead with marriage.

this never made sense to me. before we drive a car we go to drivers ed and take classes and learn, then we drive a car. before we get a job we go to school and college. before starting anything you first have to learn. how does this make sense that we are not allowed to date but should get married. would you tell someone that has never driven a car before to get in a car and start driving? no right. so this is why no dating in sikhi doesn't make sense to me.
@jessejames8633 жыл бұрын
@Goose that doesn't even answer the question. stupidest response ever. the reality is i honestly dont agree with no dating in sikhi. i agree with the fact that there should be no sex before marriage but how are you supposed to understand what a woman wants if you have never been on a date before???? is a genie going to appear and teach you how to successfully manage your marriage once you are married? no right. so that is why you have to date so you can learn what woman want and how women think.

You should make your own decision after consulting your parents, his parents and him. Sorry cant do more, we are not really trying to give relationship advice to people.

This is just a social commentary on hookup culture and how it does not fit into Sikhi, which is obvious. Guru Ji tells us how to live life and that should be applied to all aspects. As such there are many people who aren't looking into dating in a hookup culture setting. To say there is "no dating" in Sikhi is not correct, Guru Ji does not say that.

Why do you need society's approval to get married? If you love your bf, you should marry him. Remember sis, true love is very difficult to find these days. Lucky are those people who get it. When you will reach 40s, you will realise this. Go ahead and show middle finger to haters

Partner can facilitate spiritual growth if you guys have self awareness and genuinely trying to better yourself + you can go beyond lust in sex in marriage. The action of Sex itself is not "lust", the mind being absorbed the desire of sex is lust, sex can in fact in be a vehicle to facilitate love and bond making,

Hi, What about if you have a chronic illness like me? I have CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) quite badly and due to exhaustion I can't work to support myself and probably can't handle having kids while ill. I am almost 28 and stuck being ill living with my parents. Am I supposed to be celibate for life? (unless I recover or if an effective treatment is developed). Any advice much appreciated, Thanks
@SikhTranslations8 жыл бұрын
Matt Jones you should get married mate. find someone that will love, regardless of your condition. it may be hard for you to have those type of relations but I think you could have a surrogate. you shouldn't avoid marriage and stay celibate just because of your condition! God bless you with luck!

Mind yobiz.. stop with the gibberish. In sikhi, you dont' cut your hair at all. As long as you stay clear & take shower everyday, hair do not cause any sort of problems. They actually help the body with the friction & actually REDUCE irritation that might cause itching.

I earnestly carry guru Nanak in my heart and listen to his teachings ( whichever I learnt as a kid)& adore Sikhism although I am far from carrying bani/ memorising it and so on. However I think just as any dogma, philosophy, religion,one most be able to walk his/her talk. Therefore the idea of telling your significant other,my parents are going to talk to your parents for arranging our marriage really seems to make absolutely no sense at all 🤷
