TRUE FACTS: The siege and sack of Constantinople occurred in April 1204 and marked the culmination of the Fourth Crusade. Crusader armies captured, looted, and destroyed parts of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The Crusaders looted, terrorized, and vandalized Constantinople for three days, during which many ancient and medieval Roman and Greek works were either stolen or destroyed. The famous bronze horses from the Hippodrome were sent back to adorn the façade of St Mark's Basilica in Venice, where they remain. As well as being stolen, works of immeasurable artistic value were destroyed merely for their material value. One of the most precious works to suffer such a fate was a large bronze statue of Hercules, created by the legendary Lysippos, court sculptor of Alexander the Great. Like so many other priceless artworks made of bronze, the statue was melted down for its content by the Crusaders. RETURN THE STOLEN TREASURES TO THE GREEKS!

I'm Venitian and I personally do not support what they did back then during the fourth crusade, it was a vile action indeed. However I think that everything that was stolen would have had a much sadder end if it was still left in Byzantium when the Ottomans arrived, especially the Cristian artifacts . Now almost ever object that was taken is on display, for everybody and more importantly inside one of the most beautiful Basilicas in the world, built buy the GREEKS, many of which were refugees.....

@@TheNautiluss The culture of the Roman / Byzantine Orthodox West was destroyed by the criminal Franks who were only interested in establishing the papal empire and destroying the glamor of early and pure genuine Christianity. Everyone will be judged, one day, for crimes against humanity.

Fotini ArtDeco, I agree with you. This is partially why I'm very reluctant to most religions, or rather the people who lead them. After all I think that God needs no book, rite or sanctuary to exist. His greatest manifestation is the Universe that surrounds us, yet only in the end we will see...
