I'm all for Mosko Moto's concept of separate shell and armour. I use layering for backcountry skiing so that concept works well for me. I think you will see the big brands take notice of the versatility of layering. I agree their kit is expensive.. but as the saying goes... you get what you pay for... same goes for KLIM etc. I am very happy with my MM jacket and pants. I've had it in all sorts of weather here in BC & Wash. Rain, cold, heat ... no problem. And I have the "added experience" of hitting a deer at 50k/h and resulting crash to prove how good my shell and armour worked! My MM jacket combined with my Forcefield Pro Shirt works perfect at keeping me dry and warm (or cool) and my armour in place.. much better than either of my Joe Rocket mesh or Wilson leather jackets. Tim... keep living your dream and thanks for sharing it with us! Look forward to your pannier review.

Good review. Mosko makes great stuff. The Basilisk seems technically similar to the BMW Enduroguard jacket/pants although Enduroguard has integrated armor. I can see using the Basilisk for purely off road/back country but for adventure touring where you are on road and off road/backcountry seems separate armor would be a PITA vs. integrated armor. Looking forward to hear your take on integrated vs. separate armor for adventure touring.

Having just recently visited the Mosko booth at Overland Expo, I can positively say it's worth the price. And I am a really cheap bastard! The clothing was new but, after wearing it for a while in the booth, I am convinced it's the right system and product for me. Now just have to save up for the pants and jacket. I already have some Mosko soft luggage (gasp) on the way! It's really well thought out gear.

I personally like my "ICE' information on my helmet and not my jacket. I've been down and EMT's immediately saw info on my helmet. I use one of those label making 'machines' that uses the colored hard plastic tape and the letters are punched in with each click. I like 'B Positive' and right below 'Do Not Remove' just to the side of my chin on helmet. Great video!

I have no idea why its taken me so long to watch this particular video, but you really did a super job of reviewing the jacket and pants. I’ve been tearing my hair out trying to decide on which brand of new riding gear to purchase. I’ve ruled out the Klim Baja S4 early on and narrowed the search down to the Adventure Spec Mongolia Trail jacket & pants, or this Mosko Basilisk jacket & pants combo. Its hard not to notice all of the complaints about the price of the Mosko garments (and they aren’t inexpensive), but if anyone is paying attention, any good set of quality gear being sold these days are all in the $1,500-$2,000 range, that’s just the way it is. Hell, I’ve got not one, but two sets of Klim Bandlands Pro suits in my closet and I’m still looking to get something that is lighter and more user friendly for hot summer dirt bike riding. This Basilisk jacket seems to check a lot of boxes but, as you quite accurately pointed out in the video, a “Built-In” “Rollup” hood is the one thing that is totally missing in what otherwise seems to be a competent jacket. Is Mosko listening? The jacket needs a hood!!!!!!!!! Mosko is a bit of a head scratcher at times because they obviously put a lot of thought into designing their products, but out of nowhere they totally drop the ball in these little areas. One example is one of their tank bags that has a lot of really good features, but they failed to make it waterproof and came up with a lame rain cover instead, ARGH!!! 😡.

I love all the input and points of view on this Mosko Moto here! Coming from off-road to mote travel and road riding Mosko is to most of my riding buddies what a tourateck is to a GS. So it is cool to see both trains of thought coming together! I come from the school of smaller bike and gear so we can go farther off the beaten path which constitutes wearing under armor more times than not so the point about it not having armor I find valid yet it didn’t cross my mind until others here pointed it out That’s what I think is so cool here there is a big bridge being gapped and some great ideas being shared and 99% looks like respectfully. As for myself I can’t get enough riding on two wheels so it only makes sense to learn more off-road and on so thanks for inspiring lots of helpful conversation weather that was your intent or not I think it is helpful and thought provoking!

Good video, Tim. $1100.00 for jacket and pants, even though they are waterproof, seems to be very high. I would not be able to afford them. Then you still need to buy armor? Sorry Mosko but this is a big fail. I am a fan of their soft luggage system, though. Also when you test clothing for ventilation I suggest you wait until you are in Texas during the summer when it is 100-115 degrees F. That will tell you how good ventilation is! Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next video.

This was an excellent review. Did 5000 mile TAT with Mosko soft luggage and tank bag. Perfect. I rode with separate armor which allowed cooler riding options. This jacket is aimed at off-road adventure rides. Pricey, but consider the $1000 Klims. Ride what you can afford.

Tim, totally agree with having a lightweight rain hood foldable into the collar as many windbreakers do. Seems like a no brainer for on or off the bike. Klim and others don't have one either and I'm not sure I understand the lack of hood. When in a downpour the rain can migrate down your neck. And as you may know Thursday at Touratech this year it poured while getting the tent set up. It sure would have been nice to have had the hood already on your head! 💦 Ride on!

I’m years late to this, but the philosophy is simply that for off road riding, a hood on a jacket is something that will inevitably get hung up on a tree branch or other point of danger. Off road, you don’t want anything flapping around.

Thanks for posting this review. If you can please extend the review, or do a separate piece talking about how well the jacket and pants work when wearing it over armour....either MM or another brand...as this would be really helpful in deciding whether to invest in this MM gear or not. Currently I have a Klim Badlands jacket and pants setup...but really dislike it.... very uncomfortable, bad fit know several places, heavy and hot. The BL jacket is especially disappointing with sleeves that are so tight it's impossible to add any layers.

Love there stuff but wish they had an option to buy their jacket with integrated armor. For weekend warriors , this jacket would be fine but for those on RTW travel having separate armor just sucks
@norsefalconer
@norsefalconer 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent review, Tim. Is Mosko offering/planning to offer an armor set? If so, do you know when that might be available? Imo, what's nice about separate armor, especially off-road, where abrasion isn't as big of a threat as street, is that the jacket can be removed and the armor stays. Everyone that rides off-road knows how hot that activity can get, even in brisk weather. I think it's a good move, but at the price point they probably should have included armor pockets so folks have the option, especially in the pants.

@@waltnovinger6431 Thanks Walt! Right now, I have a Fox "knock off" mesh/hard armor shirt, some shorts w/hip pads and shin/knee guards for off-road, and an integrated set for on-road/Crosstouring. When I replace my road suit, I will get a separate armor set to use for both. I've looked at Bohn, and I appreciate the recommendation. That said, I was just curious about Mosko. It'd be strange for a company to basically forego convention, and then not have a complete offering. But, maybe they think the armor field is sufficiently handled.

@@cracotator And what’s wrong with it being made in China? People from the U.S. are always quick to fault the products that are made in China. What these same people don’t realize is that the majority of products sold in the U.S. that are cheaply made in China are exactly what the buyers that source products out of China look to buy for U.S. consumption. There are factories in China that cater to anything a buyer wants to pay for, primarily known as Good, Better, Best. As an example to what I am saying, I don’t see anyone complaining about Apple’s products or any of their IPHONES, all of which are made in China, in case you didn’t know. It is meant to be used with stand alone armor, separate from the jacket. This allows removal of the jacket off road on a hot day and the armor is less likely to move around in a crash. The advantages are a far wider temperature range and increased safety. I get it though, it's not a small investment.

I'm just going to be real, that price point is way too high for my budget. Kudos to those who can afford something like that though.

It's definitely not cheap gear, I agree!

$600 raincoat. I guess they need to match the $800 backpacks with plastic plates on them.

Pete its definitely not a cheap jacket, I personally think the technology in it justifies the price but it is for a very specific type of touring that definitely doesnt apply to all. Adding $200 in armor makes this roughly equivelant to any of the Gortex Klim gear. Just my opinion of course, I appreciate your perspective and totally get that view 🙂

"Jacket is $600..." I stopped watching immediately. No point in going further. Nope.

Hi Tim, thanks for the review. The jacket is similar in functionality/price to the UK made Adventure Spec waterproof breathable shell which does have the integrated hood. We have recently bought new kit and my other half has also gone for the layering approach but adventure spec gear with Knox armoured shirt. I ended with Klim with inbuilt armour simply because I couldn’t find anything else that fitted a 5ft 3 lady! It will be interesting to see which if us has the best solution after a few thousand miles on the road.... We are also looking at the Mosko soft luggage for our trip so will look out for your review on that with interest. Kind regards JP

JP, thanks for the comment! That is interesting and I will take a look at the Adventure Spec gear. I can't think of any gear that has that hood, glad to hear someone is thinking of it. I'd be curious to see how the two sets of gear stand next to each other after some miles. Review on the bags coming soon.

I have the Knox armored shirt which is great. I did have the basilisk jacket but even the small is too big especially the arm length which made it impossible to use the venting zips on my own. The basilisk pants fit great but leak in the crotch. I am a size nz 10 woman.

@@Versatile70 Finding gear that fits us ladies is always a challenge! I've had the klim altitude trousers and jacket now for a couple of years and they've worn really well. Still completely waterproof although I've washed and reproof them, they're great in the UK. Currently in africa for 12 months with the knox pro shirt, a cheap throwover waterproof and the klim trousers so we will see how that works out!
