I have only just started, and I have used a Leatherman multi-tool for just about everything on my small willow basket. Secaturs or “pruners”as I have always called them , tape measure and a pair of kitchen scissors fill out my tools and fit in my Carhart apron pockets nicely. Thanks for the video!

Any suggestions where I could find a large bodkin for basket making to buy like one of those shown in a video? There are some wooden ones online, but nothing like the ones shown in the video.

Thanks for your video Hana. Where did you say we can purchase the Japanese side cutters?
@HannaVanAelst3 жыл бұрын
Mary Butcher in the UK or online.

@@HannaVanAelst I looked online. There are so many. Yours looked finer. The ones in Australia look more heavy duty and they are for cutting cables.

When I first started basket weaving I would buy baskets and copy them.Books were very far and between there was no video. There were no living basket makers in my area from whom I might learn. That was 40 years ago. I was hoping that I could make baskets for a livelihood in my retirement but the Chinese have flooded the market for pennies a basket.

Just do it for fun and see what happens! I find people support and encourage local makers.

Bodkin (like an awl but a bit broader along its length), measuring tape, "Japanese side cutter" is simply a pair of wire cutters found in any hardware store, secateurs are a common gardening tool and the thumping tool is made of iron, sometimes wrapped in wood and is a heavy object used for tapping down the weaving as you go. Some people refer to it as a "whomper". The knives are hawkbill knives, also a common type of gardening knife. For the weight you can use a sack of sand in a reinforced bag, an old-fashioned iron, a rock, a small bodybuilding weight, an ankle weight, etc.

Where can we actually buy these tools...preferably together as a weaving toolkit?!
@HannaVanAelst3 жыл бұрын
Great idea but I have never seen them sold as a kit. Something to ponder about....

@@HannaVanAelst There is a man here locally who teaches shoe making. In addition to teaching people how to make various types of shoes, he also sells shoes and boots he's made, his courses, various supplies and tools...including various kits of tools for making shoes. He has very bare bones 'beginner' kits for those who aren't sure/ready/able to infest in more than they need to accomplish making a very specific kind of shoes, etc. He also offers the tools (especially ones that are harder to find) for individual purchase if you don't want to buy a kit or just need one thing. In making these available in kits, he makes it easy to find everything you need to buy in ONE PLACE to get started! Also, since he has prequalified the tools, you know they aren't cheaply constructed and are of high enough quality for him to endorse them by selling them to his clients. I'm sure he makes some money as well for his trouble of this great service he provides! Here's a link to his site so you can see what I mean. Thanks again for all the great videos! laughingcrowe.com/
