Michael's way was the best for his team at that time. Robert Parish was quoted as saying that MJ could never have gotten away with the way he acted in practice if he was w/Celtics, but he wouldn't have needed to. MJ had a support staff that didn't have the same winning drive that the Celtics or the Lakers had, so he had to brand it in them with a hot iron in order to bring them to a championship level. And that he did... 6 flipping times

@@Richard-hx6mi umm no. As good as MJ is, and I think he's the GOAT, he couldn't have waltzed into Boston in 1984 or even 1988 and started barking commands at Parish, Bird, McHale...etc. You don't get a better example of seniority than the Celtics in the 80s, who have already won championships, who are already legendary. Maybe in 1992 when the Bird and McHale were all old. Or, maybe, in this hypothetical, if MJ came into the league the same year and was added to the roster at the same time as Bird. But, now this comparison is getting silly. At North Carolina MJ was not a tyrant, rather, described as very well mannered by Dean Smith and James Worthy. Even with the Bulls, he was less abrasive with Scottie because he was great and already possessed the necessary discipline and drive to be a champion. The same would have held true for all the hall of famers for the Celtics. Jordan respects champions and destroys those who are not.

He is old school, which made him physically and mentally tough. You're not going to get anything from MJ because no one gave him anything. You have to earn it, like he did himself.

MJ probably got so fed up being beaten by the Pistons that it drove him to do everything he could to toughen his teammates to be as mentally tough as he. Isiah once said that the Bad Boys did not worry AT ALL about MJ's teammates. They had zero respect for his supporting cast because they were mentally weak. That is is just so telling. So MJ had to be a hard ass, and that carried over to the 2nd 3peat team. But he was actually probably a nicer, more understanding leader in that 2nd 3peat team, even if that's hard to believe. I don't think there are any stars who became good coaches, unless you count Bird in Indiana and I kind of don't, love him, but that team was built already and he bolted pretty quick. My buddy said that's also true in hockey, and he speculated that those are the guys who spent the most time actually being coached, and seeing what the coach was doing, so if they had an aptitude, like Kerr said, they had an apprenticeship. 5:32 we practiced harder... Credence to the fight these guys had back then. They weren't taking nights off for rest, and running it hard for 82 games was a badge of honor. Yeah, a lot of folks didn't last as long but with the way they played, a lot of them shouldn't have lasted as long as they did.
@katrinachavez35332 жыл бұрын
Even pick up ball at local rec center was played harder. I remember I used to get runs in Orange County with the likes of Sean Rooks, Cedric Ceballos, Miles Simon, Reggie Geary, Cherokee Parks, Alonzo Jamison, Tony Gonzalez, etc. and the games were a lot more intense than what you see in the NBA today. Now when I go to rec center guys play with no tenacity. It's like playing in an All-Star game. I'm 53 so I benefit since it's not physical. But what a huge difference between back then and now.

that's why MJ was perfect in the finals.. not to take anything from duncan and curry but maybe MJ's style is what got them those 6 for 6 in 2 3 peats.. that's why duncan did not repeat(still 5 of 6) but still impressive and step is 4 of 6(still not bad at 67%), just saying maybe MJ's cutthroat leadership is the difference..

They never actually said it but the reason MJ was “feared” is because no matter how well he played,…..no matter how hard he played, no matter what his intensity level was, those guys knew he had another gear. They weren’t afraid he was going to murder them or beat them up. They were trying to hold their own and not give him a reason to get ratchet it up another notch. They were like, “play him hard but don’t upset him”.
@booJay2 жыл бұрын
5:49 that's also the same reason why he loses so much and will never truly be in the top echelon of players. Steve basically confirms how soft the league has become and that the competitive spirit isn't as high as back in the day.

Different eras jordans era was all about toughness and defense, physicality. He knew that in order to make the team into a championship team was to toughen em up whatever it took scream, yell, fight. That’s why kerr meant jordan was not humble in good way. Sometimes being arrogant and mean to ur teammates as a leader helps get the better out of them. Kobe was the same way that’s why he’s a 5 time champion. Having the ability to make your teammates better as a player is not easy its more of a gifted talent one is born with. Lebron, Kobe, MJ have this ability as a players

It’s crazy bc they say longevity is better now but it’s sports! You get paid so much because it’s a short term career for the majority. I do believe all these injuries now are because players load management so much! With anything consistency is a given. If I miss time from the gym then start back it take a minute to get back adjusted. If you sitting out for weeks then you back playing with no practice, scrimmage, your body needs time to adjust to that game time playing. I think that’s why a lot of guys are often hurt!! MJ was way demanding, aggressive and competitive and that’s why we loved him. .. Love Curry and Duncan but many ppl didnt give Tim his due during his playing days because they said he was nice and quiet. I miss the Jordan data, just an exciting time of bbal! I love GST they keep me entertained during this era of bbal

Rex's comparing how MJ dominated in the NBA to the way he dominated in high school probably doesn't resonate with Steve Kerr the way it might with someone like Shawn Kemp, LeBron James, or Zion. Rex himself was a beast in high school. If you YT his Apollo HS highlights, he was ridiculous. Steve Kerr has said that wasn't the case with him. He was not highly recruited out of Palisades HS, but he steadily improved under Lute Olson's coaching in Arizona and became an All-American along with Sean Elliott. In contrast, I was on a plane to New Orleans with my family when I was in college, and I must have been reading Slam magazine or something, and this guy next to me struck up a conversation. He said he saw Shawn Kemp in a summer league game when he was 17 years old, and that Kemp was the same size then as he is now (at the time in his prime is Seattle). Just dunking with impunity over everybody, truly a man amongst boys. Jordan was elite in HS although he lost out to Buzz Peterson as North Carolina HS player of the year. It's weird how people peak at different times. Many players who did not have the same pro career as MJ did were even more dominant in HS than MJ was. Rex was among them. Kerr was not.

glen rice also said the same thing. they beat the bulls in 1 game but they will never beat the bulls in a series. and thats sometimes how leader works. he will coerce his will to his team mates to win, whether u liked it or not, u will perform as hard as your leader. back in the day, timmy, manu and tony are leaders, steph has klay and draymond. jordan has none coz scottie was injured and dennis was doing extra off the court. he has to be tough and strict.

I’ve seen both of them play and under no circumstances I will take Lebron over MJ. Jordan was so skilled in so many areas. Besides what is mentioned here, he had much much better handles,, and he just sore in the air so high with so much control and grace. His hang time was insane. I really don’t even know why this even came up. I have a theory; when MJ left the NBA TV ratings plummeted. They needed to market players to be just as good as Jordan to attract viewers. But the fact is, it’s just a marketing ploy that has gone ever since Jordan retired and it hasn’t panned out. People are not stupid. I know what I see and what I saw. Hell, I say today’s game is more favorable to Jordan.

LBJ will never reach MJ, he's literally just stat padding to cover up what he lacks: - MJ got pissed at where he was at, so he basically took up the leader's mantle and literally woke his teammates up, made them work harder and got 6 rings at home. Basically when a storm hit his home, he fixed it and built a new house with what he already had. - LBJ got pissed at where he was at so he created a scene where everyone can watch him giving a big finger to his home and ran to make a super team. And he chased super teams 3 times lol. To do what? To get 4 rings lmao. He might be one of the most gifted athletes in the NBA history, but he will never be the GOAT. He's a sneaky fucking business man who follows whatever suits his benefits and marketable image.

Pretty sad when steve said that they’re doing things smarter today. Yeah they are…. For the sake of the millionaires that rely on fans to spend hard earned money to see who they envy play a childs game professionally. Michael and the league back then played hard all the time because it was expected from themselves and the fans. People wanna see EFFORT. They wanna see intense and at the edge of your seat play. Not players being careful and taking breaks so they can play for 30 yrs(exaggeration). Yeah it benefits the players who get paid RIDICULOUSLY to play a dam game, but the mentality of feeling like you’re obligated to entertain and put full effort into every single game is nonexistent today. But to try and make this decision to try their hardest to keep their players from getting injured is just pussyball. Go stay home and play video games then. Oh wait, they might still do load management due to finger injuries.🤦🏽♂️ F@cks sake
@keymncole2 жыл бұрын
so they don’t play with effort because they avoid injuries that may end their career in a game that they love? doesn’t even make too much sense imo playing hard is still here, but technology for body conservation is more important than trying to destroy your enemy, in which you still can do, curry and giannis are testaments to that edit: you need your body to entertain in a physical game lmao
