@@ibashcommunists6847 Average european players are more talented (skilled) than average NBA players by far. The big difference between leagues is about athleticism. Rules and the level of contac allowed by referees in Europe makes athleticism less important and makes talent much more valuable. There are tons of players getting minutes in NBA who wouldn't be able to abuse of their body in Euroleague and would never get a place in any Euroleague team because their lack of talent and there are also tons of players that are great in Euroleague and would never get signed by any NBA team because of their lack of athleticism.

He did hold a 5 hour long practice but in his first ten games he's 10-0. 6-0 in the euroleague and 4-0 in the adriatic league. Nedović and Vildoza have been playing out of their minds in this 10 game stretch but at the same time it was excellent coaching by Duško Ivanović. 🔴⚪

It is also about the team culture of Europe-Balkans in general. You are also having lots of common breakfasts, and meetings and your coach is being included way more in your life with positive manners as well. Also, when you include that it is the case starting from your early career, you are getting more okay with this because they are in a sense as a father figure, rather than business friends. I was playing in U16 league in Turkey, and our coach was an Efes legend, from the team winning Korac Cup, and his ex-coach was our club owner and he still even though being 50 years old was getting harsh criticisms and being shouted in the face from his ex-coach where we were witnessing. When you know that it is not something personal and it is for your improvement you are taking it well. Also, for instance, once in a friendly game, the coach said in the timeout to me "is it too thick to take into your ass", I get angry and said "bald pimp" and we were about to fight and he didn't even take me to the bench. Then I played harder defense and after the game, we settled down and didn't even talk about it. This is game, both of us and all the team wanted to win, and so it is the anger, and high emotions of this. Ps. this is U16 summer friendly game, now think playing Final Four ahahaaha

I remember club officials ripping apart Ömer Yurtseven and David Mutaf when I was at Fener. there are some really bad bad people in Turkish basketball. I also remember how shocked I was when a legend of European basketball criticised a 17 year old in front of a press conference. It felt like he was trying to destroy Ömer Yurtseven rather than coach the team. We had great talent that year and everyone just left for other places some of us even gave up on Basketball. because whatever we do Ömer Onan's son was the star ad we were supposed to pass it to him. This is 2 years ago in Adidas Next Gen tournament in Istanbul I remmeber our beloved coach just sold on us and made us play complex sets that we practiced time to time because he wanted to show that he was ready to move on as a pro coach and we lost all our matches. anyone can look up our game plans In Turkish youth league and our play In the next gen tournament it was miles of what we played. Of my 7 years of Turkish basketball and 2 years in national youth levels I hated every time I had to talk with the coach or cşub officials. Yes national team was better since coaches were trying to build something but those dumbass club officials still tried to influence the national team coaches.

Another big difference is that in NBA if you have a big contract you play no matter what. Even if you make defensive mistakes. In Europe, even if you are a star on the team, if you do not deliver, or if you make some consecutive mistakes, you are gonna get benched, period. Every player knows and assumes this. Imagine an European coach in the NBA benching Harden for stupid concentration defensive mistakes, and/or playing him less than 30 min. He would be next day in GM's office demanding this coach to be fired.

And I'm telling you, the least succesful teams i've been and seen, on my experience, were the ones that gave special treatment to the best scorer. There are a number of teams that I could see improving under Itoudis' guidance. @goldenbee7k Messina is a great coach and manager but never had success in his carrer, I mean actual championships. Itoudis is a really successful coach and manager. it's a big difference my friend. And Armani last year was in the playoffs. For euroleague the difference between success and failure is so close. The competition is huge. Look at Panathinaikos, how much it changes with a few changes.

In my personal opinion, that seems like the ONLY option that makes sense. Others either proved everything already (and don't have these ambitions) or still haven't proven much to be considered. There's been some talks about Saras, but I'm not sure he himself would enjoy having the tiniest bit of control compared to what he has in Barcelona.

The lack of intensity in NBA defenses would make many European coaches suffer a heart attack... NBA is based on individual skills, while European BBall is much more a collective play, where coaches do have a word. I feel sometimes that coaches in NBA are no longer needed. Great video, btw.

The coaches in the NBA are simply there to take responsibility for bad results, even though they're least responsible for those. They're forced to treat a bunch of illiterate thugs as gentlemen, because if they don't their lives will be ruined. That's why only thing you'll hear from NBA coaches sre mild at best attempts to motivate the players. "You can do it guys", "believe in yourselves guys", "Do it for such and such guys". That's actually pathetic, and kind if sad. What kind of coach literally CAN'T substitute a player? That's not a coach. It's a white guy in tie to take the heat after the loss. It's embarrassing.

And I'm glad you did your homework and didn't attribute everything to the "culture", since there are huge differences between the NBA and Euroleague (you mentioned the number of games, available roster etc.). Having said that, it would be quite interesting to see, for example, Zeljko Obradovic coaching an NBA team. Also, maybe it will be easier for people to understand why European (especially Balkan) players aren't scared of anybody when they move to the NBA.

This is because coach in Europe is not just a coach to you. He is also your father, your grandfather, your uncle, your professor...He cares about you, he wants to teach you, to make you tough, wants to push you to your limits, he wants to make a player of you. In the NBA you are on your own and coaches do not give a sht about you. If you want to be better and stronger do it by yourself, if you do not want they do not care, will replace you. Almost all of these coaches in the video are from Balkan (Serbia, Greeece, Turkey...) and Mediteranean area wich is pretty similar in mentality. And that is the way how we treat and teach our kids. You have to be TOUGH and they gonna make you TOUGH. Period. There is a "joke" (but it's mostley true) about Balkan tehnique how parents learn their kids to swim. Throw them in the river or a pool and when kids start drowning they pulled em out for a few seconds to get air and then throw them again. Repeat that as many times as needed until kids start swiming or better say start to realize how to keep himself at the surface by calm moving hands and legs. No swiming classes no BS.

You are really riding on that Dusko Ivanovic Stauskas story. We all heard it he will never play in Europe because of hard trainings and unacceptancce of losing or whatever... The guy made the most idotic mistake I've ever seen, he is an idiot and no one would take him... As for Dusko's "ideology" being a thing of the past, since he came Crvena Zvezda made a U turn and from what could've been a disasterous season now it looks like it might be great season, Crvena Zvezda won every match in both ABA and Eurolague... Of course drop in form is inevetable but in just few weaks he made a team look like real contenders for ABA title and top 8 in Euroleague, Crvena Zvezda is now very tough team to beat. And you also could quote Mirza Teletovic who said that only players who don't want to improve their game can dislike Ivanovic, so there are two sides to every story. And why coaches from Europe don't do well in the US, I think it's because it's basically a different sport, some in game rules are different, organization is different, expectations are different, culture is different, hierarchy, fans, media, everything is different...

When you got the best league and 300 million peoples, there's more chances to find 6'6 talented people. Compare it to France (60 million) or even more extreme Slovenia (2 million). 4) Money and social ladder. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and when you're poor in Europe, it's best to hope for a good soccer carrier than a good basketball carrier. Basketball is not as supported as in the US (money wise).

Baseball and Soccer, while still mainly caucasian has a lot of latinos players. Basketball and Football are predominantly African-American. As for international players, it all depends about the popularity of the sport and demographics there.

As a türk idc if it does makes sense or not i freakin love europian/balkan style hard coaching. Father and son kinda relationships comes with the discipline. I have seen interviews of Obradovic amd his players and they all state that he is a very nice man and he is a close friend to many players off the court. There was a mention somewhere that one of his players was having a hard time in his life and Obradovic was visiting his home and talked to him for hours and not just one time and then they were sitting together to watch a movie. He is to be feared in the court and at their practices, but he changes completely in normal life.

It would have been easy to focus on cultural factors and other nebulous and unsubstantial concepts, rather than the institutional incentives that perpetuate the European coaching style, such as the fewer games, lack of roster flexibility, reliance on tactics over pure talent, etc. Very informative.

Everything you see on the court is dictated by the fans. What the fans pay for, they get. In Europe fans are more tribal and expect to see that in the court as well. Tension filled arenas, tough defenses, yelling, lots of contact. In the NBA people prefer a movie- like scenario with a good guy/ hero that wins the day. Traveling, ball carrying ruins the show so they're never called and the stars get a better treatment. It's all just a show with a lot of money involved and the fans are the ones paying for it.

There are no superstars in the Euroleague. When a superstar arises, they are leaving immediately for the NBA (ie Doncic). Good coaching will decide games way more often. One could argue that coaches are the biggest stars.

This "old school" coaches are actually coaches of the "ex-yugoslav school" (now serbian), or coaches influenced by it. Funfact: Even Itoudis and Trinchieri.. speaks Serbian (Serbo-Croatian) very well. Sarunas was player for Obradovic, and Itoudis was Obradovic's assistant coach for many years. Obradovic himself was student of halloffamer Aleksandar NIkolic, known as the "father of Yugoslavian basketball". This influence is present where Serbian coaches worked the most - Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey

I believe Sarunas' coaching methodology was influenced by a few schools of thought: The collegiate years Sarunas has spent playing at Maryland. His brief appearance in the NBA. As you mentioned, his time playing for Obradovic, but also for Aito Garcia in Barcelona and Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he was part of a team that won two consecutive EuroLeague titles under the leadership of Pini Gershon, known for his tactical game management, and his lead assistant at the time, David Blatt, who specialized in fundamental basketball.

The thing is that it depends on how the coach overall is. Because a coach is yelling, doesn't mean it's bad. It is worse if a coach is just silently staying at the sideline. A coach like Trincheri is actually doing a very good job and is usually different when there is no game. In addition, he is not just angry but very emotional in general. Such a coach can sometimes be like a 6th player on the court. Yet, if a coach is just yelling at your players or is even blaming them hard, then it's obviously not good. NBA and European basketball can't be compared anyways. The NBA is basically about making the shots, if you don't hit them, you are out, simple is that. European basketball on the other hand is much more about working as a team. So, if one individual fails to do his job, it might throw away the whole team effort. Defense can only be played with 5 people and to break the defense, it also needs the entire team. That's why you see such different style of coaching.

Except for the physical violence part, I take the coaches' side 100% (even if I dislike some of them) ; I firmly believe that basketball is a game about teamwork, talent and vision rather than jumping high, playing one-vs-one and swagging. By the way, that' s why Jokic destroys the NBA for the last few years and will keep doing so: he is a team player, he has talent, he has a great supporting cast ready to sacrifice for the common cause [which is winning, not being pretty or impressive or scoring more individual points]. This doesn't apply only to professional adult leagues btw. I've played basketball throughout my teens and you get the same treatment as shown in this video.. I've gone trough many coaches and almost all of them would regularly verbally assault a team of 14-year-olds cursing us and our entire family trees for good measure in full view of our parents watching from the stands lol What this video doesn't mention though is that off court, the coach is literally like your best friend and in the case of young boys almost like a second father.

I am 99% sure that this harsh treatment doesn’t occur in hard working teams. Only in teams with good talent but poor work ethic. And it only occurs after the initial calm demonstration and explanation of the plays and practice benefits. If your boys give 100%, you know their limits, there is nothing but praise and support. But, when you see them performing in practice with 50% effort and then being all sad on weekend because they lose a game…well it’s time for reality check. This outburst happen, since after the match players complain right about everything but themselves. People in general want to win, they just don’t want to work for it. That’s why the lottery works. I know because I’m that coach. And I witness this patterns for the past 10 years in all age groups from 6 to 18 year olds. In the end It’s all love from the coach.

Im from Puerto Rico and Idk now a days, but back when I used to play little leagues (im 33) coaches where like this. I mean, we were kids so a bit more toned down, but they would still get mad and scream to us, throw the drawing board around and cuss us off. So yea, you get used to it, understand its not personal, and that its part of the game. Heck, even parents did’nt like a passive coach. I do think coaches in europe are too much, but I also think coaches in the nba have been belittled and should have more authority. They should be able to call out their star player. Nba players have waaay too much power.

NBA fan reactions to coaches calling out players is a lot different from European fans as well. Coach Nick Nurse called out Precious Achiuwa for his lack of consistency in rebounding and Gary Trent Jr. for his lack of deflections earlier this season and NBA fans were shocked and disappointed that the coach would call out his players like that. Nurse got his early coaching opportunities in Europe and still carries some of the European values in his coaching style. Oh, and by the way, Gary Trent Jr. had 7 steals in the first two games after his call-out. Public call-outs work when the coach knows how to do it at the right time and directs it toward a player who will receive that criticism well. Coaches have to know their players' personalities, there's no point in yelling at a player who is not going to improve by being yelled at. Ultimately, I don't see how running 1000 suicides make a player better, I'd prefer to focus on basketball mistakes (FTs missed, defensive miscommunications, bad screen navigation, etc.) in practice rather than just mindlessly running up and down the court for hours on end

I'm coming as someone who was born and proudly raised as a Boston sports fan (go Celtics 🍀) and also believe that Basketball is my favorite sport next to Football/Soccer and I'll just say this. The Euroleague is SOOO underrated and can be as if not more competitive than the NBA is. And that comes not just for the coaches, but also the players and *ESPECIALLY* fans. I've been an FC Barcelona fan for a while and learning that they have a basketball team and the league they represent made me feel like I was discovering a new goldmine. I've never looked back since and been a supporter of Barca's Basketball team too and seeing how tense some fans and rivalries can get is euphoric. The game should be aired as much as the NBA is to Americans as they should know that it isn't just an "NBA rejects/Prospects league" or some slander like that and hope that people see what the hype is all about one day.

You can't talk about European basketball objectively when you're this used to the NBA. NBA travel calls were non-existant for 20 years, and they've just started bringing them back. You have a man to man defence, while we have a zonal one, team-oriented. You aim for kids who can jump the highest and run the fastest, while we aim for kids who can actually pass and think like a basketball player(the reason why 2 guys from European countries of 7 million and 2 million people are currently your 2 year running MVP and best scorer in the league respectively). You can't really compare a league in which players HAVE TO BE a part of a team, and a league where a single fast idiot can get his coach fired for yelling. The reason the word "team" stands right next to the word "basketball" is because basketball and the team come first. Don't remember Bulls changing their name to Chicago Jordan Bulls just because Jordan was better and more important than any other guy in the whole nation. The reason a European coach can yell and express his emotions is because he's there to win titles, and in the end of the day, with the amount of american waste players we have available to our teams, anyone can win the Euroleague, so there's obviously a reason to run drills for 5 hours if you know your players aren't giving everything they have to win, when they have to win a vast majority of their games throughout the season. You can see in one of those clips you used how Dusko Vujosevic(ex-coach of Partizan Belgrade) is choking Bogdan Bogdanovic. He's choking him, literally. Yup. He'd probably get thrown in jail in America, and the player would be traumatised never playing a single minute of basketball again. Instead, Dusko has moved on to greener pastures because of media pressure, and he made Bogdanovic the NBA player he is now. Many drafted players who came back to Europe after an unsuccessful attempt at an NBA career have came to Dusko, and he got them right back into the NBA, but to leave 90% of your life in the arena coaching and teaching and molding your players, just to not be able to express ANY emotions? That's a basketball life not worth living. It's like if you won a ring and proceeded to help the janitors clean up the arena, then going back to training instead of celebrating, it's just not right. NBA is built around crybabies who can't handle their own success, let alone failure. We saw the prime example when Jokic rammed into Morris a while back. The dude was waiting in the locker room, WITH HIS WHOLE TEAM. The only time anyone in the NBA acted like a team, when really, they had a 1v1 beef. Like a bunch of autistic children peeking out of the door to see if they can catch that super cool guy and degrade him to their level. Isolation plays, man to man defence, not calling travels, Steph shooting from the logo, it's all just a show that's not even worth talking about. You should go to a Euroleague game, then you'd understand. You Americans have like three chants, the player's name, "MVP" and "DEFENCE", while we have hundreds for every single team. Hundreds of SONGS written by fans to cheer for their team in the arena, not to yell defence like defects. Imagine giving a player a 50 million dollar deal, then not being able to scold him when he doesn't want to pass for 5 straight attacks, ruining your winning chances. Safe to say that Steph wouldn't be shooting from the logo if he had a European coach, no matter how consistent he is from there. Safe to say Harden would play defense, and he'd ENJOY IT. Safe to say Ben Simmons would learn how to shoot threes. Heck, they'd bring back Shawn Marion and teach him a good shooting form.

There are a few other reasons besides the ones you mention (excellent video btw). 1: A lot of these coaches shown here are from the Balkans. Very fiery, hot headed people. 2: The level of players in the European leagues is not as high as in the NBA. Therefor more reasons for coaches to get angry with players about particular performances.

As someone who grew up in europe playing semi-professional and moving through several years of youth preparation rosters (which later many first league players got selected from) it is indeed true how ridicoulus huge amount of freedom players in the NBA have and still it is sacriligious to critize them if they just won't commit on court. But honestly..i would ve never never never let a coach talk to me like that. And even here in Europe the chair of a coach is highly in danger if he gets physical with a player because of his temper issues. Especially with the mentalitiy of firing coaches in an instant (imo its derived from first league football/soccer) if the team plays bad. No other team will hire a coach who just got kicked out of his team because he slapped a player in anger. Stand up for yourself, especially if unjustice is done to you.

I think the effect a coach like that has on a team depends on how the players are. In my team arrived a coach very good tactically and with a lot of leadership, but he would never listen to us players and thought he was the only intelligent one. For his ego sometimes he continued running plays that weren't working. Another bad thing was that he only cared about winning and didn't let bench players run plays or play with freedom, so the game was starters-centered. At the end, he made us a far better team and with him we reached national finals every year but we weren't able to clutch also cause of him offending us in every timeout. Now we have a new coach that does harder practices but have a better relationship with us, and we are playing better cause we feel more free of playing without being offended all the time. He's really positive with us and we prefer it that way

Last year, after the Euroleague finals, I expected Spanish coach Pablo Laso (although losing the finals to Anadolu Efes) to be called to coach an NBA team. He is such a great coach. This isn't just about NBA vs Euroleague. This is about how Americans and Europeans, especially traditional Eastern Europeans view life and work. Europeans view success as a result of a collaboration between different parts of a society or any organization. There are no single heroes individually saving everyone like comic book caricatures which most Americans like to believe. The foundation of success is the system and collaboration of different parts of that system and your value in that system as an individual is weighted based on your adaptation to that system in your particular role. Americans think individuals create success out of thin air and that's because of their foundational myths of white conquerors doing everything from scratch in a new continent. Trailblazers, Railroad tycoons, Industrial Inventors, always individuals over systems whereas Europe was mostly a stable, traditional bunch of nations sans the occasional world wars, in which individuals played a role rather than create it. I must say I agree with Europeans more on this issue since NBA teams are now drastically suffering for letting the star players have too much power and control over the teams. Nets are done, so are other clubs which follow their paths.

I don't know if you are being serious analysing "5 hour training" by Dusko Ivanovic, but I see this is not the first time on this channel. It was obviously not true, Dusko just didn't deny it directly, but the players had also been asked about this, and none of them confirmed this rumour. Why do you think Nedovic or Vildoza would just accept it and protect totally new coach? And who in the world would come to a group of 15 new players and make sure they hate him from day 1?! I mean, I know that DI has such a reputation, he definitely belongs to old school of coaching, but consider that this is not 2005. There are games every other day, there is a travel. It's almost physically impossible to have 5 hours trainings, even if he wished so. Also, players have their ways to speak up, and I'm sure they would if there was a reason.
