Sve je počelo preko Žarka Paspalja, koga je Greg Popovič snimio na nekom turniru i kasnije doveo u San Antonio. Međutim, on je tada bio asistent Leriju Braunu, koji je poznat kao trener koji ne voli evropske igrače, a Palja je uz Dražena, Divca, Marčuljonisa i Volkova bio prvi igrač koji je direktno iz Evrope otišao u NBA, kada su Ameri bili mnogo više skeptični nego danas. CSKA with JR Holden, Šiškauskas, Langdon, Smodiš, Papaloukas, Khryapa... Then Barca with Navarro, Rubio, Jaka Lakovič, Ndong, Basile... Baskonia with Teletović, Splitter, Rakočević, Pete Mickeal, Prigioni. Then Montepaschi with Kaukenas, Lavrinovič, McIntyre, Romain Sato, Stonerook... Unicaja played excellent basketball in those years, as did Partizan, which developed excellent young players and had great results.
