i like this guy because he’s just real. sometimes i question his choices ngl but he’s always came out alright so that’s great! he doesn’t pretend the food is good and he just talks about stuff without worrying about insulting people (who probably don’t know much english anyways) he just tells us either “guys this place is terrible” or “this place is awesome” no sugar coating or anything! glad i found him!

In this specific case I suspect everyone around him speaks English and can understand him to a decent degree. Hong Kong, due to its history as a British colony, is a dual language region and English is literally one of its official languages, along with Cantonese.

@@A_G420 its mostly smelly cos the fermented bamboo topping, I think it smells like parmesan if you left it out to rot in the rain? tho my bf said it smelt like the sewers... you can find instant versions of this dish in most Chinese supermarkets if you want to try it. just leave out the bamboo stuff if you don't like the smell, the rest tastes like regular rice noodle soup.

You need a guide in hong kong! Look for "Cha chaan teng" (tea restaurants) in hk. It's a mix of western and Chinese food and it's wildly popular in HK, also I believe it would match your taste! In addition, try a "dai pai dong" (streetside restaurant). It has some of the stuff a tea restaurant has, but some quick snacks as well and more stir fry style dishes. Traditional Chinese food is not modern Chinese food, nor is it all modern hong kong food! Those snail noodles are more of a mainland Chinese dish.

I grew up in Hong Kong before moving to the US. I gotta say the food that you tried was not exactly in Hong Kong style, more like random Chinese food that even most locals find exotic. And no, we are not insane and we don't eat pets. The Hong Kong cuisine usually refer to the kind of food invented and became popular during the British rule (before 1997 and yeah, we can date it decades back before even the communist rules China). I suggest you visit the local restaurants called Cha Chaan Teng. You can get some nice food that doesn't sound weird at all, like the Siu Mei, toast and chicken steak. The breakfast there is highly recommended. Other stuff that is more perceived as "Hong Kong food" would be in the Cantonese style, like the Siu Mai and Wan Tan noodle, which you can get in China Town across the US, where ever you can hear Cantonese. Plus, a tip when you are shopping around the stores, the merchandise sold in the stalls can be fake, but the ones from proper shops in the buildings are generally genuine and they don't bargain at all. The British wouldn't really let the people sell fake stuff in properly registered shops, but we don't know what China's gonna make it to be years later. The Blue Girl beer that you drank is indeed a German brand and brewed in South Korea, customized to fit the taste of the locals. But in case you miss any special stuff in Hong Kong, you can always visit China Town in Vancouver or Toronto, Canada. It sounds odd, but people say the Hong Kong food in Canada is more traditional and tastier, just because lots of the original chefs left Hong Kong before the handover to China, and during the political turmoil, to Canada or the UK, among the hundreds of thousands that fled the city. I understand people have a lot of stereotypes against Chinese. I don't blame you, because we are not that different lol. Don't really want to make your tour experience a political one, but please understand most Hongkongers consider ourselves as former British nationals and Hongkongers, and never wanted to be part of China. Although still called Chinese, the ways we speak and write are different. Most Chinese won't understand our mother language. Anyway, welcome to Hong Kong and wish you a nice trip!

Actually anything there that says 'duck blood' doesn't mean duck blood, it actually means that the dish is prepared via the cook squatting over a heated pot, and spewing in controlled blasts of diarrhea! Just to help with the confusion.

Authentic Chinese menu items are straight from the depths of hell. I'm sure if you know what you're doing some amazing food can be ordered but my impression is that it's the culinary equivalent of playing Russian roulette.

This channel is great because the guy just goes into everything blind. That bowl of urine-tasting noodles is actually well known, even among the Chinese, for being an acquired taste because it does apparently smell and taste like excrement of some sort.
