I love this video.. thank you.. The only time I use bass boost is when I'm using a lower wattage amp.. 500 to 600 RMS.. but I include it when I set my gains etc.. I used an oscilloscope to make sure There is no clipping whenever I add that boosted frequency. I never set my gains 1st then bass boost like this video shows.. I have learned so much from EMF.. and I appreciate these type videos.. thank you !!

smtyson You are right but at the same time.. it can make the bass sound muddy over a certain db level.. and this video shows the negative impact it can have if you don’t use the setting right because it will clip your subs.. I might use 3db and nothing more and I apply it when I set the gains 3db is enough but I use it on amps that is around the 600 watts range.

I professionally installed form 1988 to about 2001, 2 ways I have used bass boost, 1. In a factory radio where we used a line out converter and the factory radio was tuned a certain way. (most factory radios are not 20-20,000 hz) 2. using an amp for midrange and were lacking snare drum pop. you can gain a little in the 80-100 hz zone and pick that up. Strong midrange around the 100 hz zone is hard to get out of 5.25" driver, A LITTLE bass boost helps. If you have a full 40 hz signal going into the amp, it is being amplified already, you cannot boost anymore power from that amp that is already maxed rail to rail , you just get harsh clipping. A 100 watt amp with 18DB bass boost will never be a 150 watt amp. Hope this makes sense.

This is a very informative video and confirmed what I had suspected. I own an Audi S5 Sportback and felt the bass was sorely lacking, so I recently had a JL Audio 10-inch sub installed in a custom enclosure with a 500/1 monoblock amp. I was initially underwhelmed because the bass was totally overpowering. I checked the amp and saw that the installers had turned up the bass boost about a third of the way. I turned it all the way down and the system is amazing now.

In my personal experience, bass boost changes the way the bass sounds and I personally like it moving the air a bit, so what I would do is to ensure that the gain is reduced proportionately. For e.g. in this case the threshold voltage for the amp is 40V, if one increases the bass boost (say 3-6 db) it will also increase the voltage thus causing clipping, so if we were to reduce the voltage back while the bass boost remains ON, to 40v using a DMM it will not clip and still sound different / better (depending on personal choice) than before but not damage anything. Having an oscilloscope (or use of alternate methods - available on youtube) to check the clip will definitely make it even more fool proof.

@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 5 жыл бұрын
I must have more experience than you because more voltage doesn't mean more SPL. A slight clip can give you more SPL, a hard clip can reduce SPL a lot. You know how when you clip it on music it stops getting louder, or even gets quieter? It's because you put more voltage into it and clipped it. That means it's an audible difference in output, which is a minimum of 33% QUIETER. I've tested peak SPL with a slight clip then gone 1 more click into hard clipping and dropped 2.5 dB.

I will say you definitely have more experience than me , what I was trying yo get across, with my experience using Orion xtr 2250s is that I got my highest spl numbers when the voltage on the speaker output was at its highest value, the spl was also at its highest, when I down tuned for no to little clip my spl was lower by about 1.5 dB then when I gain matched all the clipping equal I got my highest spl , on an audio control back in the early 2000s , things probably have changed since then with pressure meters, but in my recent old school spl challenge I had my highest spl with a very clipped amp , I did a 147.2 with a xtr 2250 very clipped , when it was not clipped it was only in the high 145s , this was using clip indicator lights on the amp , maybe on single woofer setups clipping matters but on multiple woofer setups in my experience only the highest voltage gets the highest spl 👍🏻

Have separate level control (through the RCAs to my monoblock) and bass boost control. I find I rarely turn the bass boost up for most music I listen to (rock, country, etc), usually only for some hip hop/rap songs where it actually increases the sound of the bass in a good way. Thing I dislike about my Pioneer monoblock is the bass boost is only at around 50hz, you can't adjust the frequency. I like having both controls, I find on FM radio I have to turn the level control down because the stations tend to have their bass turned way too high. Been trying to convince my buddy that his bass boost knob is NOT a level control for his amp, which is why it sounds horrible turned up and not just louder.

Thank you so much for this informative video. I have recently installed low RMS subwoofers on a 5 channel amplifier and could not for the life of me figure why I have clipping when I turn up the bass boost on my equaliser, even with the gain set right down to zero on the subwoofer channel of the amplifier. Turns out my equalizer has up to 18dB bass boost. My amplifier would get really hot with the bass boost on the equalizer turned on (bass boost on the amplifier is turned off). I will set the boost on the equalizer to 3dB and set the amplifier gain to get a clean signal. Then use the the equalizer with the bass boost turned off. This might just save my setup and give me the clean bass I so very much desire. Like I theorised with my brother before finding this video. Bass boost is like having a big turbo. Maybe you're safe at 14psi but the boost takes you to 25psi and you don't have enough fuel flow to account for this added boost then 🤷‍♂️ you're not gonna have a good day. Just because the boost is there, doesn't mean it's safe to use it all.

So question kinda on the subject. I'm pretty sure I already know the answer but I think it would be helpful for others to see it answered. So you find your max volume on your deck we'll say 47 out of 50. Then you set your 4 channel with a 0db tone and then on your bass amp you want to use some overlap. Let's go crazy and say you listen to certain large youtube car audio personalites and you set at -10db overlap. Now you play your new bass cd which has multiple tracks with tone like bass lines that is recorded at say -4db. Being that everything in the system is set correctly and nothing is clipping and the music track itself is clean this will still overdrive the amplifier into clipping, correct?

If you had the same Q and to the same frequency, bass boost on the amp or a DSP would give the same result. So I was thinking of setting the bass boost to 6dB (halfway mark) on my amp and tuning the amp to 1000W. My logic is I can't run my subs at 1200W cuz my alternator can't handle it as well as my amp, so if i push the bass boost a bit and tune the gain knob to 1000W, that will give it a little boost to aide in the lack of running at full power. In the future, I plan on upgrading to a higher amp alternator, and getting a more powerful amp; when I do, I would have the bass boost all the way off when tuning. Does this sound about right?

Bass boost simply takes a set frequency and makes it louder, it doesn't make it collectively louder nor does it make it draw less amperage. You might be surprised how much power you aren't making. Good evening, I have a question that I hope you could help me with since you sell Sundown Subwoofers. I bought the SUNDOWN SINGLE SUB BANGIN PACKAGE (2000Wrms) 5 days before my 50th Birthday on October 8th from Down4sound in Las Vegas. After waiting 7 weeks to get the call to go pick it up here in Vegas... I Finally got my Birthday present. 🤘🏼😜👍🏼 Now I am having a hard time finding a Sub Box that has the specs for the X v2 15" that I picked for the Bass package that I bought. D4S doesn't carry single 15" sub boxes. From the few boxes that they showed me they only had a huge dual 15" sub box. Other than that they didn't have any bigger than 12" sub boxes. Would you happen to know of a place that sells good sub boxes that are pretty much made for Sundown Subs? After waiting 7 weeks I am Amped (Pun Intended) to get my new addition Thumping/Pumping/Bumping Down the road. 😉. Thanks

@@treezy206 Sundown amps are called "bass knob" and it does modulate volume, sort of. With that knob all the way up it will never go higher than your gain setting, so every position in that knob is a reduction of gain. So, it's not so much a volume knob as it is an input reduction.

I think you misunderstood how it works and when to use it.. As you increase Bass Boost this increases power at the lower levels BUT the amp has a max power that can't be exceeded so you get clipping.. When you use Bass Boost you need to reduce the gain to stop the clipping. The result is lower lows but less total volume. When BB is applied it applies it on most amps at about 45hz and it linear reduces as the frequency goes up. So it works best on speakers that have a linear drop off.. so is best with door speakers and sealed enclosures. And obviously if you can get to 45hz (large sub) without BB then it's not needed. BB is therefore best deployed to small speakers. I use it in 6.5 inch door speakers.. Would i use it on a 12" ported enclosure.. NO

On my deck the loudness is in three options. Not only that I can adjust the gain in the amp in the deck via sla option on top of that I can set my sub channel to non fade and it has its own built in high and low pass filters . So I can set my loud to boost at low volume and tappers off as I crank the volume. This way I can run no amp if I wanted to for my front and rear stage( I have amps going to these) boost certain ranges and ignore others allowing cleaner signal to the speakers with out messing with the signal going to the sub amp. At my amps I run zero boost as I have to signal voltage fairly high but under the highest input specs for the amp. At this point I reset gains and tune my eq's and filters . I know my deck at this setting clips at 55 out of 60 . I tune max volume to 50 and touch up my gains by ear and then adjust eqs by ear. At this point I can play louder than I like with out clipping or noticed distortion. I set it this way due to the different styles of music and formats it's sent on . Once I select radio or CD I have to do the same as they each have their own parameters .

Isn't that called a square wave🤔 I've been into music production as a hobby for a wile and the "round wave" is called a sine wave and a "square off wave" is called a square wave. The difference is the "sound of it. So developing sounds for everyday music on production software. Technically they is a lot of square wave sounds in music. That being said, seeing a o scope start to square off of a smd dd1's light start to come on isn't that developing " the sound you want to hear" come from your subs, like music production..... I get the whole ohms law ect..ect... volts to watts how many watts a driver can take. I don't have a o scope so I don't know what the wave would look like but I know on a dd1 if you compensate the main level on amp and use the dd1 for boost until the light comes on and back off its still good.but again I have seen the wave it makes. And isn't a o scope a infinite level on a chart and it being "start to square off" just become another process of engineering SOUND.....

I noticed that if I set the gain to the bass boost clean I needed less gain and if you set the gain first clean then you needed very little boost and it would stay clean…. That was on one branded amp. I had another that off I wanted the boost I had to compensate. Do y'all think they should make an amplifier, head unit and Source unit that's honestly unclipable and undistortable? Why can't they make things easy for us the consumers instead of us wasting our money constantly buying new things that we honestly don't know much about it but then again we learn but we still make mistakes time and time again just saying? I mean not all of us know how the tuna amplifier or know how to work it not many of us have friends or access to the internet. When I was younger like at the age of 16 I didn't know much about tuning amplifiers and yes I did burn out a couple of speakers but I never fired the amplifier. And time I learned when my dad taught me but what I'm trying to say is not all of us know how to do this type of stuff that is out today. I hope this makes sense if not don't worry about it. I would have to agree to disagree! I've been messing around with bass since the 80's when bass boost was none existing! Different amps back then you really didn't need it. Take for instance the old school Punch150. Need I say more! Fast forward to now to higher wattage amps, bass boost is horrible depending on your equipment and settings! Settings are key! Bass boost is possible and not the Grim Reaper of audio if you properly set your gains and head unit. Everything don't need to be maxed out. The more you turn bass boost on the more you turn your gain down! A quarter to halfway depending on your crappy equipment! 😏The sound difference will rock you. I never buy or install an amp that's higher than my speakers! Your asking for it. 1000 watt amp 1500 watt speakers that way I can play around and not do harm. Bridging would be the closest you want to push speakers in this case. Not Bridging 2000 watt amp to 800 watt speakers! Bone head ideas! 🤪🦴 ... because your going to always be tempted to crank it up a notch..don't let people scare you into not using bass boost!! There are proper ways in tuning it. in all its about SETTINGS..SETTINGS...SETTINGS...
