It seems like you guys ask for budget examples a lot, but whenever I do them I don't hear anyone say anything about it. Let me know! Thanks for tuning in! I remember my first box I made 10 years ago. It was two Dual brand subwoofers SD12 from walmart. I used 1/2" plywood, made a curved 3" port sanded by hand. W-35" x H-16" x 16" pre drilled holes and used hardware studs as terminals. No gimmicks that box could only do 30hz the lowest @ my amplifier settings. No capacitor was needed. 140 rms was my common level, I was a quiet kid in high school.

As usual, great video! I like how you also show how it can be done with basic tools and explain why the design is stronger. For those without a router, a file or rasp removes MDF fast and can be used to bevel or round the edges. I make this same style brace for my boxes. It's definitely more labor intensive and time consuming, but it is VERY strong! I use a router table with a fence, stop blocks, and a straight cut bit. No drawing, special router bits, templates, tape, or rotten jigsaw needed. ( I have several jigsaws and hate every one of them) Although, IMO, anytime you add a fence to the router, the danger level rises. Your way looks safer.

When external dimensions are at a premium and internal bracing takes up to much vol. A good alternative is 1"OD wooden dowles. Make sure to pre drill to prevent splitting when screwing them to the exterior walls.

Very smart! Might use this, as I have no clue how to account for the volume the square brace would change

Ok I understand how to make it and everything but how do I calculate the displacement of the bracing ? I can’t find anything on how to calculate it. Would it just be HxWxD of the bracing then divide it by 1728?

I want to know is their a audible difference between the two window braces? My bet their is no difference between the two or even a measurable difference. I agreed that you need a little bracing though. A wood dowel will get the job done just as easy.
@CarAudioFabrication4 жыл бұрын
A big difference between no bracing and having bracing. But as far as the budget version vs pro version, likely not much, but tell me: Which would you rather have in your box?
@grady.stu.8300 Жыл бұрын
Ive found that wooden dowels do a good job but this way is definitely better. I'm putting my box together today. 5 cubes before bracing for 2 avatar Stu 12s tuned to 28hz. I'm looking to have a 4.8 ish cubes when all said n done. 1 cube bigger than recommended. 8" aeroport.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but the panel flex by pushing the board isn't the best example. One panel will flex, but try that same experiment when the boards are screwed together as a box. Especially a small box like one. It'll bee fairly solid. Again love your videos bro!

You guys will honestly nitpick the tiniest little things. Its just to show an example. Build a box with zero bracing, you will be able to feel the wood flex at volume. It wouldn't have been very exciting to rest my hand on something and say "I can feel this flexing"

Thank you for spreading your knowledge. I've been into hobbie car audio for many years my newest system is by far the cleanest clearest yet because of your teaching. Could you touch on box calculations for multiple subs in one container (port or not...)? please and thank you
@joshhuoabski32784 жыл бұрын
How about calculations for an area where the only actual shape is the surface that the speaker mounts on? EG, under seat of a ram 1500, 2009-2018 extended or crew cab. Pick a side. The 60 or the 40. Volume goal....1.106 cu.ft. exact spec with displacement of the 12"sub included. Hint. It fits, sounds great, and you will need to get the extra volume necessary from the area behind the seat while still being able to fold the seat up. Challenge presented!

So at how many watts would you recommend starting to use bracing? I have a 600W RMS sub, but never felt the need for bracing. Though since I never used it I don't know if it makes a difference. Need to build a new box for it soon anyway, since I got another car, was wondering if you'd think 600W would benefit from bracing.

But now, there is quite a bit of refiguring VaS as you have taken up quite a bit with the braces. That's quite a bit of extra, and tedious, math calculations in order to get the proper tuning of your enclosure. It is already enough of a pain doing it, even with custom enclosure calculators. Is the work truly worth the payout in SQ and SPL?
@CarAudioFabrication4 жыл бұрын
It is very little effort to properly calculate the displacement. Basic math. If you can't determine how to calculate this displacement you honestly probably shouldn't be "designing" the enclosure.
@CarAudioFabrication4 жыл бұрын
Additionally Vas is the volume of air that when compressed has the equivalent force as compliance (Cms) of the speaker suspension. It has nothing to do with box air volume and if there is a brace or not.

Why are your vents always so large? My rockford p2d212 recommends a port of 4" diameter by 10". I can convert it to, say, 1 1/2" wide by 10" high but it's depth is still only 10" deep. Yours always seem wider and far longer. Is there something I am missing? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated as I am about to attempt my first ported box build.

I got my system done a couple years ago when I didn’t know much about car audio, now that I understand what I’m doing I noticed when I adjust the bass on my factory head unit it puts bass into my midrange as well. I have a external equalizer and a lc8i that’s connected to my factory amplifier. Because I don’t want to add bass to my midrange speakers (which I think will cause distortion and damage them) my subwoofers start clipping at low levels because the bass from the head unit is set to “C” which is like flat so the bass barely even hits and when I want it to hit hard to balance with my system the amp shows that it starts clipping. Anyone know how I can fix this. By the way the idiot who did my system only used the front and midrange speakers as speaker level inputs to the lc8i and the sub and tweets get their signal from a a rca pass through.
@matthewf19794 жыл бұрын
All of the factory HU speaker level outputs should go to the LC8i. Read over the LC8i manual, especially the part about “Summing”. That should fix the issue.

I prefer to use real 3/4" plywood with minimal to no bracing of course depending on the power of the woofer. I dont see the advantage of compressed, glued up saw dust(MDF) if anyone knows of any advantages of MDF over plywood, please fill me in.
