Floating Jerkbaits are not that popular for bass fishing these days... Honestly, I have no idea why that is! Fishing with floating jerkbaits such as this little Rapala Original is SUPER FUN!
In today's fishing video, I walk the bank at a local park and work this small jerkbait on my trout fishing rod. This is a 6-foot light power rod spooled up with 4lb test fishing line. This setup was definitely not ideal for fishing around heavy vegetation but I managed to make it work :D

Small floating jerkbaits are incredibly productive for Smallies here in the Potomac watershed. I often will fish a section twice; once with this style bait, and a second time with the Ned to pick up what I missed on the first round.
@FishAnything

Heck yeah B! That would be one heck of a one-two punch :)
@BarryP
@BarryP 4 жыл бұрын
@@FishAnything It can go either way on these rivers. There are a lot of small sections that can produce three on a moving bait (a jerk or a paddle) and one bonus fish on the Ned. Other times, I might get one or zero on the moving bait and get three or four on the Ned. Light level, water level, water temp, water clarity and mood are all factors. In my experience (at least in this watershed) a 2 - 3" jerk is basically the Ned of hardbaits. Combined, they will tell you what's up and what to throw in most river conditions. ;-)

This is a great bass, trout, bluegill, crappie, and other fish. I started fishing this lure in 1980 ultralight 4lb Test Line just twitch let it set for a while then pull it let it rise to top. A friend caught a 12 pounder on this bait with the same setup on the same lake. He was lucky this was a snag-free pond. It took him an hour to land the bass. Your video made me order 8 of these 1 1/2 inch silver rapala. I like the F3 and got 2 of the 5F.

I love fishing those floating rapala's! I normally use the size 7 but since watching your ultralight videos, I'm downsizing to the size 5 and size 3. I'm hoping they cast well on my ultralight setup. I'm thinking about trying those storm suspending dots & strips on these smaller floaters to try and turn them into suspending jerkbaits. Or at least have them raise/float slower to the surface.

@@FishAnything hell yeah man just today I caught a white perch, which I did not even know existed in our local reservoir. Which my family has been fishing for 50 years. I got it on gopro. Turns out it would have beaten the state record for NJ that was set in 1989. That was the best fighting fish I have ever caught. And being someone who has caught multiple 28inch pickerel, and 8lb bass, that says something. Crazy that they hid for that long.

I have a hard time getting my 2.5 rap minnow down more than several inches into the column. Does different line type/size aid in getting it deeper? Also, the split ring on the line tie often "folds" onto the bait and fouls up the retrieve. I'm thinking of removing the split ring and tying a loop knot directly to the line tie. Thoughts?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 4 ай бұрын
A loop knot instead of the split ring will work just fine! And line choice can certainly make a difference. Lower diameter lines will be a great way to encourage a bit more depth

Welcome to Lake Ronald McDonald -- billions and billions of quarter-pounders served. I love twitching a little Rapala on the surface. Not as much commotion as a lot of topwaters, which the bass seem to prefer at times. If I were you, I'd ditch the 4-pound mono and use 10-pound braid in those weed-choked places. It fishes the same but holds up a lot better. You don't lose lures, and the bigger fish don't end up swimming around with your hardware stuck in their faces. BTW, you need to keep the 'stache. Very dashing. Another great vidya.
