Dear Sir, im an old beginner and ive driven myself self mad not being able to mute properly and without being able to afford lessons I turned to youtube. Now whilst there are many muting videos yours is the only one ive watched (and now the last one) that actually showed up close physically what I couldn't understand and get to grips with ie; the use of the whole flat hand to mute and not taking your fingers off the strings completely.I cannot thankyou enough and if it wasn't 00.11 am I would be having ago. Yours most gratefully.

Thank you for showing and explaining your process in real time. I’ve watched several other KZbinrs explain muting but they don’t show examples of string ring and demonstrate their approach to muting. They tend to show the final sound without detailing their process for muting.

Really happy to hear that. It's one of those things that is really awkward at first but helps in making you sound much better. Do a tiny bit every day, record yourself and listen back, and before you know it, you'll be muting just fine. Good luck!

Hey Dan! Thank you very much Could you please help me with something I'm starting to nail that right hand resting on the E and A strings when slapping but i really can't do it when i play standing! And if i sort of rotate the bass to have more confort resting the right hand, i end up having a hard time with the fretting hand especially for the higher notes way down the neck Could you cover that for me please?
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 3 жыл бұрын
With slapping, I think it’s a good idea to cover most of the muting with the fretting hand. That’s because the other hand is too busy slapping and popping. You could even use a Gruv Gear fret wrap (or similar) to tame the notes whilst slapping. I think I’ve explained this in a couple of videos before. I think a lot of it is adjusting the strap on your bass so that sitting and standing positions are the same (or very similar).

I’m coming from piano which mutes a note whenever u let off a key and playing bass is like having the sustain pedal on all the time. But the soft let off on the fretting hand feels the most similar to letting off a key on piano and seems to be the most action efficient method of doing so. When I see people playing quick slap, is this all they’re doing to mute, or do they use a combination of muting techniques and simply practice whatever technique they need to use depending on the notes they need to play? (I know dead notes mute the string, but is there a consistent method to mute for short rests between notes or staccato?) I’m sure I will learn everything eventually, but there seems to be so much nuance to just playing subsequent notes. (Piano’s a bit like second nature to me, so me not being able to just blaze out something like a staccato c major scale is so strange 😅)

Dan, Great vid! Thanks. Couple questions: while fretting hand muting, I find that I get pull off tones on the G string. Would you suggest a lighter touch on the muting finger(s)? Also, do you eq your amp or bass to get less string noise? Like slides and light muting? I have new strings could be that as well. Thanks again!
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Christopher! It may be a lighter touch against the strings is needed, yes. Maybe a slight change of angle (difficult to say without seeing you playing). I just deal with the string noise of new strings. That tone can be desirable especially to bring out the highs in rock music.

How to avoid ringing sound as you have on 2:54? I have it on each string, annoying ringing from part of string between saddles and polucking finger. It always appears when you use alternate finger plucking. How to play David Bowie`s Blue Jean? When you need to use your your fingers to make that muted staccato sound? it also adds a lot of ringing between notes.

The video is about how to stop that sound. It takes a little bit of practice and coordination but you’ll get it.

Thanks for the vid. I just have one question. Which right hand A-string muting is better?With ring finger or with thumb?
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Everyone’s different. Whichever one feels good to you and gets the job done is the right one. I often interchange without really thinking about it at all. It also depends on the context…

I’ve seen people play an Open string and then Mute others around it with their fretting hand then seen others play open string and not mute at all how do u know when to mute and when not to ? Thanks
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Жыл бұрын
Simple: when you need the note to stop (either to control note length or because the note/string would ring otherwise).
