And even when faced with the shadow death the criminal could not help but be distracted by the bright light of this angel of justice! with his dying words, gifted Reeves his pistol. Bass Reeves is not an example of a great Wild West lawman Or someone who struggled to overcome prejudices. He is a symbol that justice CAN persevere through anything. But we must make it so.

Why does it “amaze” you that many Americans heard of him?
@jb60275 жыл бұрын
According to biographer Art T. Burton in his excellent book, "Black Gun, Silver Star", the shooting of cook William Leech transpired thusly: Bass Reeves had a puppy that started following him around on his rounds, so he adopted it. Reeves taught the puppy to hop on its hind legs and beg for treats. On the day in question, the puppy hopped on his hind legs begging Leech for a treat and Leech responding by taking a skillet off the fire and pouring boiling grease down the waiting puppy's throat, causing it a horrible death. That's when Reeves' rifle accidently went off, killing the cook. If true, this just might be the most timely and fortunate accidental discharge in western history; and in my estimation it raises Marshal Reeves a notch higher in the pantheon of western lawmen.

Idk, he seemed like a decent man and loved his puppy. Why would he kill his puppy in such a sadistic way? On a documentary it said there was a bullet jammed in his gun and he used a stick to pry it out and it Discharged, causing a fatal wound to his friend the cook.
@vespadavidson23155 жыл бұрын
I have never had, or seen, or heard of an accidental discharge when removing a centre fire round from the breech. Not if it has been in there long enough to get a stick and start to remove the round. Had he poked it down the muzzle, then probably the breech would have exploded, this being the only way I can see you could force the shell up against the firing pin. Occasionally a rim fire, normally on .22. will go off. Locked And Loaded.

I lived in Fort Smith many years and have seen the statue of Bass Reeves and while there I studied the history of Fort Smith, Judge Parker and Bass Reeves. I am also a member of The Lone Ranger Fan Club, and this topic of Reeves being the real Lone Ranger has been brought up many times and disproved. Mr Bass Reeves had his own real-life legend and should be honored for that exemplary life alone and his deeds and exploits should never be tied to a fictional character who, although a hero to many of us growing up, never accomplished all that Bass Reeves did to help tame a very lawless and wild Indian Territory. Bass Reeves was never a Texas Ranger. He was U.S. Marshall and a damned good one.

It's 2020 and I've never heard of Bass Reeves. This is an incredible story..it should be told on the small screen (maybe in 3 or 4 parts) so that it could capture the full realities of being a black US marshal in the late 19th century wild west. It's very sad that stories like this has been left out and not known by a wider audience.

People have been writing about Bass Reeves' exploits for 135+ years, while many Black lawmen are unknown. They'e even made a few films about Bass since the 1990s. He is not neglected in history as so many claim.

As a native Okie, I'd like to point out Muskogee is the city in Oklahoma, Muscogee is the tribe. And no, the tribe is not based in Muskogee, OK. They're based in Okmulgee, OK, just south of Tulsa, OK

Muscogee is also the county in Georgia where I live, which is in the eastern part of the pre-removal Muscogee Creek Confederacy. They are known as "Creek Indians" here, and that's what they call themselves. The registered tribe in Alabama is the "Poarch Band of Creek Indians."

“No known master but duty” is such a badass obituary, especially considering his origins as a slave.

Morgan Freeman mentioned Bass Reeves in an interview and got tears, when he said he wanted to have played this man before getting old. I dont think any actor can do him justice and hollywod manuscripts are full of funny one liners, ruining the level of danger this man faced. Better to leave alone the name and make a script loosely based on Bass Reeves. 14:41 Bass looks like Nikola Teslas black cousin, I suspect he might have some unknown to history father or grandfather.

@Parris Robinson They might do well, but Hollywood's 'professional' writers would try to include some sort of political message instead of telling it like it really was.

Ah there we go .NOW he was related to Nikola Tesla .Did he also invent the nuclear bomb 100 years before it was seen.?

It's a shame a movie hasn't been made of Bass Reeves life, as yet. I wish Hollywood had made a movie when they should have, which would have been the 1960s. Woody Strode should have been given the leading role. Hopefully someone in Hollywood will finally make a movie about Reeves' life. The sooner, the better.
@MrVvulf5 жыл бұрын
@bLackstar I'm fine with that, as long as it's done well. Heck, mini-series can be much better than movies when done well, because they can tell so much more of a story.

@@joshstanton267 I think there are studies in psychology that prove that enough trauma and stress causes the brain to temporary regress and make grown men scream for their mother. They say that dying soldiers may well scream for their mother in their last moments.
